^ lol BUT what thatguy and some other posters (including me) are trying to tell you is that HYPSM are NOT the only “top colleges”. Check CC’s list of “top universities” and I still think that list is too short. Schools like Columbia, Penn, Brown have the prestige advantage over schools like Emory, Rice and Carnegie Mellon but there is little to no difference between the quality of education at these schools.

^The thing is, the aforementioned universities don’t give generous FA.

Agreed alam! lol if only my parents understood too … >.>

But financial aid, like happy said, is a HUGE part of my choices, with those ivies being need-blind for internationals or at least Canadians :)

^ Second the financial aid concerns stated above. Also, I’m applying to all my schools for a reason – they all have outstanding Linguistics programs (notably Stanford, Chicago, Berkeley, and MIT).

I think for most it’s a matter of financing university…thus we lean towards need blind Ivies. If anyone can compile a list of non-Ivy schools that are need blind for Canadians, then I guess we would be able to open up our options.

Amherst
U of Rochester

^those are 2 I found that are non-Ivy.

^ Add Middlebury to your list

Yes, I was a recruited athlete. However, my email to Yale was kind of accidental. And, regardless, there is no guarantee that anyone who sends them an email will be recruited, much less have a successful recruitment. Hence I was lucky.

Amherst
Middlebury
U of Rochester

keep adding to this list of non-Ivy need blind schools. They can be LAC as well, just as Middlebury is.

MIT is need blind for ALL internationals! It’s not much easier to get into though… XD

The International acceptance rate for MIT is 3%… yeaaaaaa, no one is likely to get in… but good luck to anyone who tries! Just so you all know, schools like Notre Dame and Emory are generous with internationals. Their international student acceptance rate hovers around their normal acceptance rate… this is because Emory loves international students (13% of the undergrad population) and Notre Dame is trying to increase its international student population. Both are top 15/top 20 schools and are worth looking into.

^so, they are need aware but give out good aid?

We can compile a list of schools that are need blind for Canadians AND another list for schools that are need aware but give good aid for Canadians and are looking to promote internationals on campus

NEED BLIND:
Amherst
Middlebury
U of Rochester
MIT

FRIENDLY NEED AWARE:
Emory
Notre Dame

Middlebury isn’t need-blind for internationals any more. I would still classify it as a “friendly need-aware” school though.

Williams college recently scrapped their Intl need-blind policy but I think they would still be lenient in the transition.

Arent most schools fairly nice to Canadians? And all need aware schools do is keep track of who needs aid from them and who doesnt… Unless there is an upsurge in very wealthy individuals who are qualified enough to get into these schools, then I doubt your chances of admission because of needing aid will be significantly lower…

^ I think it is true for bottom T20 schools but places like Stanford, which is need-aware for Intls, have plenty of top applicants to pick from who are willing to pay full tuition. I think applying for aid in that situation is quite detrimental. Otherwise, I think you are correct.
