[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in
parenthesis):
[] Job/Work Experience: 3-ish years bus boy (didn’t put that on app though)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Numerically, over 600 hours, but only because CAS, an IB requirement, is a lot more flexible in what is considered community service. I got hours for being in a literary magazine, for helping write a play, etc. I’ll just list the ones I put on my common app:
Literary Editor of my school’s Literary and Arts Magazine
President of Geography Club
President of Science National Honor Society
Historian of Mu Alpha Theta
(I know, very spread out but I’ve won awards in each and can justify being in each! I like being well-rounded.)
Webmaster/Social Media Officer of Asian Heritage Club
(outside of school)
Founded a children’s magazine for a hospital
Volunteering at my Buddhist Temple and other Asian Cultural events

I only put things I was an officer/deeply involved in, so sorry NHS, S(panish)NHS, and MUN!
[] Summer Activities: I go to Thailand every year but that’s a vacation :P.
[] Essays: I’d say pretty damn good; I’m not a lit editor for nothing.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Apparently amazing, after my guidance counselor saw it for National Merit. He was an awesome teacher and he liked me specifically, since apparently, I wasn’t “douch-ey” like the other IB kids he taught.
[] Counselor Rec: Good enough to get the job done.
[] Additional Rec: From the teacher that sponsored my literary magazine; I read it and thought it was pretty awesome.
[] Interview: SO GOOD! It really stopped being an interview and started becoming a discourse on the state of education in America since he was involved with Teach for America. I think that entire conversation was more telling of me as a person than any list of questions ever could.
[] Supplementary Material(if any):

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-gen, but I don’t know if it helped that much.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Extracurriculars, recommendations, essay, can’t complain about my SAT scores, and maybe my personality? I also showed ridiculous amounts of interest in Carleton, even though they don’t consider demonstrated interest, like they had a senior call me and tell me how Carleton was awesome, so they might’ve wanted me too? Idk, at that point, they didn’t have my GPA.
[] Weaknesses: GPA GPA GPA. The only thing that may have slightly offset that is that I took 10 APs in addition to being a full IB diploma candidate.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Luck, interest, interview, and maybe geography? My profile, other than my GPA, I think, is pretty good, so if they looked at the course rigor, that definitely would’ve helped.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Rejected: Bowdoin, Rice
Waitlisted : Middlebury
Accepted: Carleton, Davidson (Presidential Scholar, apparently? 25k/year), Colby, Grinnell, (plus state schools).
[/ul]General Comments: So happy, but it’s honestly going to come down between not Carleton and Grinnell, as many people would expect, but Carleton and Davidson. Yeah. REALLY different schools, and yet I love both.

[] Why you think you were accepted/
waitlisted/rejected: I think my personality really fit well at Carleton. I really genuinely love learning new things in many fields, and I am eager to explore the world! [] Where else were you accepted/

Still waiting to hear from Pomona and Swarthmore.
[/ul]General Comments: Although I’m not 100% decided yet, I’m definitely leaning toward attending Carleton this fall. I think my supplement, while short, reflected the kind of student they were looking for (I found this from talking to others who go there after being accepted, what theyve said is best about the school and matters most to them is almost to the word what I showed about myself. I feel very fortunate, and also excited that this school could in fact be a better fit than I first anticipated).

Senior Year Course Load: calc bc, ap lit, apes, and AP Chinese
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nada
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I was involved in theatre both as an actor and techie. Directed my own shows, did ADing as well. NHS Officer but I don’t think I even included that. Link Crew Leader up until this semester (I needed to to switch into newspaper-- I figured I wanted to do this before high school ended and was left with no other choice), other stuff but I left most random stuff out-- theater is one of my passions, and I’d rather that shine through. Then comes Chinese, I took several outside classes at DePaul during summer and got As in them. Was in a million bands, have a vinyl collection still growing, etc.
Job/Work Experience: Work at this local donut shop about 20 hours a week. Wake earlier on weekends than weekdays, typically 4 am.
Volunteer/Community service: Though an atheist I did a lot through my church, but I mainly helped with stuff like theatre-- ie directing or tech for young uns’ shows. Will never forget warming up the munchkins on singing in Wizard of Oz! Don’t think colleges care about generic stuff too much so I kept it at that-- I didn’t raise $8000 for cancer.
Summer Activities: more theater, Chinese.
Essays: Good writer but with this ego-inflating thought In mind I tend to write lower than I’m capable of, other than for ND because nothing was at stake. My Carleton ones were cute I guess, I said how my math teacher said he hated it because it was “too liberal,” how that answer was sufficient, along those lines.
Teacher Recommendation: Id say generic but not at the same time? One was from a Chinese immigrant so I think, aside from being simply adorable, it held slightly more weight.
Counselor Rec: Annoyed her with my woes constantly-- therefore she addressed my weaknesses and strengths and that probably means it was good. Could not read it, right waived!
Interview: No interview.
Other
State (if domestic applicant): IL
School Type: Public, pseudo-rural wannabe-suburb
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college,
etc.): I’d say the Chinese thing is a hook.
Reflection
Strengths: I guess the overall package looked good-- I’m liberal, my stats were probably middle of the road but I showed that I’m busy and not just with random things like a lot of people. Also, I was a QuestBridge Finalist and forwarded to them RD. I think having a difficult job on top of doing as much or more than other applicants is a bigger deal than we think-- I get annoyed when people with straight As, unlike me, don’t have jobs so who’s to say an admissions officer wouldn’t consider a lack of it? I don’t really know.
Weaknesses: Not sure if lack of SAT IIs ACTUALLY matters or would sway a decision, could solidify I guess. Again, my stats were middle of the road but not so much as at my other reach schools. My essays were decent but I think overall my Carleton application was just fairly solid throughout.
Why you think you were accepted/
waitlisted/rejected: I’ve already sort of addressed this, but I guess my overall application just made me seem a good fit. I certainly would be at Carleton! Just really excited I got in. I think QB helped a lot, especially in the financial aid department. I have an affordable college choice at an amazing school, and that is the best blessing I could ever receive.
Where else were you accepted/
waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at DePaul, Minnesota, and Notre Dame. Rejected at Northwestern and Rice. Waiting on Wesleyan, Brown, NYU, USC, and Stanford. Expecting rejections from all except hopefully a small chance at Wesleyan and USC, and praying to be accepted to Brown but certainly not expecting it.
General Comments:
Once again, I’m completely ecstatic. Great school, great aid, and I got in when I thought it would be a 50/50 shot. I wish everyone else who applied the best of luck, and if I seemed mean anywhere in this thread, it’s because I typed this on a phone because I don’t own a computer.

Cheers!!

I was pretty disappointed because I really liked Carleton and I thought I would at least be waitlisted, but if I get into Oberlin it will all be fine because I would have had a really really hard time deciding between the two. Anyway, good luck to all future applicants! Don’t get tons of B s!
