Job/Work Experience: I'm a barista at the local coffee shop.
Essays (subject and responses): My short answer responses really explained my passions and why I loved Carleton so much (quirky traditions, community, etc.). My Common App essay was about a medical trip my mom and I took to Haiti last summer and my experience in a vastly different culture.
Teacher Recs: I hope/think they were strong - one was from my AP Physics teacher/TEAMS coach who I've known and loved since freshman year. The other was from my junior year English teacher who is, by far, the most amazing, encouraging teacher I have ever had and who I grew very close to last year.
Counselor Rec: I don't know - my counselor doesn't know me very well.
Applied on: early January
Hook (if any): I'm very interested/passionate about travel and experienceing different cultures.

[] Rank: Top 10%

[li] Other stats: uh...took one AP class over summer; four senior year. Just one junior year.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Cross-country (JV); Track (JV); Journalism (as Opinion Editor, cartoonist, reporter, copy editor); Visual art -- too many years in various summer/Saturday classes; President/co-founder of school film club. All of those done for three plus years of high school or more, minus the film club.
[] Job/Work Experience: None. Who wants to hire me?
[] Essays (subject and responses): Common App essay was about how my father reminded me of Barton Fink. The teachers who reviewed it for me thought it was either weird or funny, but well-written. I thought it was maybe too depressing to sound like me. My Carleton short responses were short. I wrote briefly about how weirded out I was when I saw Carleton that their dining hall opened at 4pm.
[] Teacher Recs: One from my English teacher, who thinks I'm a quiet bookworm; the other from my French teacher, who had me freshman and senior year. Probably just good, not outstanding; didn't read them.
[] Counselor Rec: Just got her for senior year...have a like-detest relationship with her. Let's see, she thinks I'm artistic and have family issues. Which are true.
[] Applied on: Early Jan.
[li] Hook (if any): Hmmm, middle-low-income Asian wannabe film buff from across the country, maybe. Also sent in a Common App Art supplement, don't know if that helped.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
I was pretty surprised to see my acceptance packet. Kept muttering OMG OMG OMG.... Think I was helped a bit because I showed interest and went to their multicultural event in the fall. My midyear report grades, BTW, were pretty crappy -- lowest UW GPA I've ever gotten in my life. Not exactly because of senioritis, since I just developed it very recently. ;)

I'm jacked. It seems like a lot more qualified people got wait listed. I guess I'm just sweet.

element man... its somewhat surprising that you got in, given your atrocious SAT scores. To their credit, the admissions committee was apparently able to look beyond this wrinkle in your credentials and accept a worthy applicant! Congratulations!

Well, sort of. One of them I think was recruited for basketball, but I don't know how much of a factor that is in Carleton's admissions process.

Okay. It's not that weird that I got in really. Carleton loves the academic diversity people like myself bring. I like learning and stuff. How many people can actually say that? I actually did fudge my SAT scores. I don't remember what they were. But those aren't that far off...and my EC's are fudged greatly I have a little more going for me than I lead on..but..Clearly my glowing recommendations as well as my pretentious essay writing skills won over the admissions committee....eh.. whatever. I feel very blessed to have gotten in and I'll maybe see some of ya there! Thank you Jesus!

Elementman I don't want to sound harsh but you have now admitted to lying in your post. Please go back and accurately respond or please don't post. We are all trying to share information for everyone's benefit and this is certainly not a place to plant disinformation. And for the other person, yes km45 being a recruited athelete is a very big factor(if you are a top player). All the top D 3 lower their standards in many sports if you are a projected impact player. Since you know elementman maybe you can help set the record straight.

I'll stay on it, at least. And the letter was nice, it made me feel a little better. Congratulations to those accepted and to those waitlisted, we still have a chance! ^^
