Official Carleton Class of 2013 RD Stats Thread

hey saammmie? did u receive a letter by snail mail?

Did anyone get a rejection letter from Carleton this year???

neethu16, yes, the letter came by regular mail.

arcadia, i havent seen one yet. maybe they gave up on rejecting people and just waitlisted everyone? ;)

Okay well, it doesn't matter what elementman got on his SAT because I know he didn't submit it. He also qualified for the state debate tournament a couple of times, and didn't apply for financial aid. Since Carleton is only partially need-blind, maybe that helped.

My friend was rejected from Carleton.

Well, people who get rejected aren't as likely to post up their stats. I know I haven't posted on the board of the one school I got rejected at...so far.

[ /list][ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:[ /b] I am really surprised I got in. I am even more surprised after seeing the stats of people who got waitlisted compared to mine. Plus I don't know if this is going to look cool, it may still have the code in it. Oh well.

First, everyone is way too worked up about elementman. Second, SAY Carleton doesn't allow sub par students in just for athletics. The intellectual integrity of the school is way too important to let lower students in just because they are good at sports. Its not that important to the school.

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: well, i really do love how they describe carleton. I feel like I would have a great time there, but it's a little too isolated for me, and not well known enough.
Hopefully I will be able to give my spot to one of you more enthusiastic prospective Carletoners!
Congrats on those who made it! and keep your chin up if you didn't! :)

Carleton's ACT 25-75% sits at 29-33, pretty standard (Chicago, Stanford, Hopkins, Brown are all at 28-33 by comparison). I think people often forget that 25% of each entering class at all of these schools have scores BELOW this range.

No one disputes that recruited athletes, first generation college students, minorities, international students, students with special talents, legacies, etc. make up the bulk of this group. The acceptances posted by swimmers, runners, thesbians, and Belizeans on this thread should come as no surprise even in the setting of many waitlisted who certainly appear stronger candidates academically.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with this admissions policy, it's been around for a long while now, is ubiquitous among top tier schools, and is likely not to change substantively. I offer this only as point of explanation. I understand well the controversy surrounding efforts by adcoms in their efforts to craft a diverse entering class.

As I've posted elsewhere, I truly hope that if you've been waitlisted and Carleton remains a first choice that you make your feelings clearly known to admissions. Fit and passion really, really matter here. Show them the love. Sincere luck to all.

"....international students, students with special talents, legacies, etc. make up the bulk of this group."

I have to disagree with your claim on international students. I think generally the requirements for internationals are even higher than for domestic students, because most schools are not need-blind towards internationals (and most internationals apply for Fin Aid). The competition in the international pool is probably a lot more fiercer than you imagined. I'm from China and, boy, kids here sure know how to get amazing scores on standardized tests. 2200+on SAT I and 800s on Subject Tests are becoming quite average...at least among the top crop of Chinese applicants.

Yes, the competition in the international pool is extremely fierce. I have a friend who had 2300+ Sat 1 and perfect SAT 2 scores, and brilliant O/A level results and good ecs...He applied last year and got wait listed at most places and rejected at some colleges...no acceptances...he applied for full aid, of course. Then there are international students with great stats who get rejected/wait-listed at most colleges and accepted at a top college like Amherst or Dartmouth because of financial need. This happens rarely among U.S. applicants.

"...he applied for full aid, of course"

Yeah, there's obviously been a two tiered system for international students for a long time now. Those not applying for financial aid have always had a major advantage over those applying for assistance at all but a handful of colleges. Even those few schools that recently went need blind for internationals are almost all reversing direction given the realities of the financial crisis.

I haven't got my letter yet. It seems I've been rejected......

Carleton, I love you so. I wish tomorrow I wake up to a big package. I hope miracle will happen

Well, I guess I'll finally show my face in the official thread.

*Decision: WAITLISTED *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I (by section): 760 CR, 660 M, 720 W (3 wrong on CR... if I had gotten 2 wrong it would've been an 800. Silly SAT.)
[] SAT IIs: 770 Lit. I forget what USH was. Like 700 or something. Not that great.
[] ACT: 32
[] APs: None yet. My school only offers two, both for seniors. I'm currently taking AP Lit, and I'm going to take the Bio and Psych tests.
[] IBs: N/A.
[] GPA: 3.9 weighted on my school's system. It's a weird system.
[] Rank: No idea.
[] Awards listed on application: National Merit Semifinalist (I actually don't know if Carleton knows I'm now a finalist), Illinois State Scholar, National Latin Exam awards, flute awards... those were the main ones.
[li] Other stats:
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Band, Latin Club, Film Club, Senior Retreat Team, Debate, YRUU (Unitarian Universalist Youth Group), National Honor Society, WYSE Academic Team, Habitat for Humanity planning/fundraising, Habitat for Humanity trips
[] Job/Work Experience: Barnes and Noble 12-15 hrs/week
[] Essays (subject and responses): How my bookshelf reflects who I am.
[] Teacher Recs: I don't see why they wouldn't be good.
[] Counselor Rec: Good. My counselor was really rooting for me.
[] Applied on: Early January.
[li] Hook (if any): Upper-middle-class white girl from the suburbs of Chicago, what what!
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Illinois.
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Private, all-girls, Catholic, tiny.
[] Ethnicity: White as white can be.
[] Gender: Female
[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I was crushed. Carleton is my first choice and I know that, personality-wise, I'm a great fit for the school. My stats are pretty in line with their averages - I'm qualified. Just qualified.

I'm going to be completely frank: seeing people on here who were accepted but are ambivalent or already knew they weren't going to attend hurts. A waitlist is better than a denial, to be sure, but it's not exactly a "yes." Hopefully my proactivity about the whole situation will pay off come May, and hopefully my love for the school/why I'm such a great fit is more evident this time around.

Magneticpoet--Let Carleton know that you're now an NMF! Definitely let them know. Now.

magneticpoet, don't lose hope. This is an odd admissions year, and your passion, if properly expressed, can make a difference. Those accepted folks who choose to go elsewhere may open a spot for you. I'm pulling for you!

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:** I enjoyed the application. rejection kind of stung, but i got my rejection from Macalester first, and I could read the writing on the wall. I'll either go to Mizzou or Marquette, now (unless I get the surprise of the century with an acceptance to one of my last 2 schools I'm waiting on).

magneticpoet. I know what you mean about people that don't really want to go. Good luck, and hopefully your waitlist does turn out to be better than my rejection. If not, you will move on, grow, and be happy. While I'm not over the rejection, it's not killing me.

My son was also rejected from Carleton. It was a tough one and there was a strange, somewhat off the mark letter about them (adcom) being shortsighted sometimes and how they hoped they were wrong about him.....not meant to be insulting but just oddly phrased.
His stats were within the Carl averages for any other year. 32 ACT and 3.75 GPA, several very good extracurricular passions including some unusual ones that are notable.
Also his older brother is a current Carl so, there was was a special kind of hurt to the rejection as well.
What we are stressing, despite 2 hurtful rejections, is that there is no one perfect school for everyone.....any of the second choices, especially the one that is offering a GREAT merit scholarship, can become the best choice.
Keep the faith whether you got into that "dream school" or not
