Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Key Club (sergeant-at-arms), Model United Nations, Literary Magazine/Photography Club (charter member), Spanish Club (secretary junior year, president senior year), President of city-wide club for SCUBA diving teenagers (unique, I guess), Acolyte, Tennis player, Youth Corps- yearlong youth leadership program, National Honor Society
Job/Work Experience: Camp counselor, caretaker for my grandmother, babysitter
Volunteer/Community service: my school require 20 hours a year, and I’ve gone over that every year. I went to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for a 3-week service trip. I also did a trip to the Dominican Republic that was SCUBA/science/service in a rural area (close to the haitian border, if that gives you any idea about how awful the situation was).
Summer Activities: Study abroad in Spain, Nicaragua and Costa Rica service trip, Dominican Republic trip, volunteer at local land trust and a food bank
Essays: Carleton blurb was pretty standard, but my common app essay was pretty good. I wrote about running out of air while scuba diving, but learning to overcome my fear and then applying that message to the rest of my life, including the college process
Teacher Recommendation: I had one from my spanish teacher/adviser who I’m close with which was pretty good. The other was from my Stats teacher and probably not as personal, but I wanted to show I don’t completely suck at math. I can’t be sure though because I haven’t seen them.
Counselor Rec: Really good. I go to a really small school with a dedicated college counselor, so I know him really well.
Additional Rec: none
Interview: none

Other
State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Independent Episcopal school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: over $300,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): SC is really underrepresented at Carleton, considering the fact that it’s in rural Minnesota, so I think that really helped. I haven’t heard of anyone else from SC who applied.

Reflection
Strengths: Unique extracurriculars and essays, coming from an underrepresented area, SAT Critical Reading, definite upward trend in my grades
Weaknesses: GPA and math scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Being from SC helped I’m sure, but it’s such a crap shoot, so you never really know.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve got 5 more school to hear back from, but I got into Rhodes College and the University of St Andrews in Scotland, waitlisted at Wellesley, and denied from Northwestern.
General Comments: Can’t wait to visit, but I’m worried about the cold.
