I was super thrilled when I found out about this. I honestly thought my test scores and GPA are very weak considering that I am an Asian, and I thought my chance of getting into any of my reach schools was very low. My strengths were definitely the rec and the essay, so I guess at a relatively smaller school like CMU that really worked towards my favor.

Congratulations to everyone accepted! 1 question for those accepted into SCS. I know it’s highly competitive and I’m planning to apply Early Decision next year. But how much computer science / programming background did you guys have? I have similar stats to many of you who were accepted, but I don’t have much experience with Comp Sci. I’m taking AP CS next year and am doing CMU’s AP/EA computer science program over the summer. Do students need a strong CS background to be accepted into SCS?

@boots2 So would taking BC / Multivariable calc and doing math contests be stuff they’re looking for? I’m a strong math student but I probably won’t be outstanding compared to the rest of the country. Do most admitted students have like AIME qualifications or 800 SAT Math I and II?

I understand the AMC 12 score is a box to fill out in the application. And if you qualify for the AIME that much better. Our son took the AIME and SAT Math II. He is an incoming Freshman to CMU
