Applying to major in Italian or Romance Studies at every school.

UMD- CP (Applying Economics, instate)
Boston College
Georgetown (legacy/one parent has interviewed for 10+ years)
UVa
Northwestern
Columbia
Rice (Legacy)
Tulane (already applied because of free application)

Can anybody say anything?

Bump .......
I'd like to know

umd - safety
BC - match
georgetown - reach
uva - reach
northwestern - reach
columbia - reach
rice - reach
tulane - safety

UVa
NYU
Cornell?

uva - reach
cornell - reach
nyu - match/reach

That's good enough for me, I like UMD enough to go there, so I figure why not apply to some reaches?
Would it help that for Georgetown I'm getting a rec letter from the president of the Italian Cultural Institute? (Georgetown's Italian Dept. has close ties with the Institute, as the Institute offers many of the extracurriculur opportunities for GTown students).

thats true -

if you would be perfectly content to go to umd, then by all means apply to all reaches. you might get into 1 or 2.

maybe the recommendation would help - try to CC it to the italian department head.

What does CC it mean? (as a verb "CC it to the Italian department head" carbon copy?"

and for the reaches could you be more specific? (match/reach, low reach, mid reach, high reach)

Great junior year grades--congratulations.

UMD- CP--safe match to match (in-state)

Now, before I go to the others, why so many tough schools and no other matches? You really should try and apply to at least one other match--take Columbia off your list and spend the time you would have spent on that on the other application.

Boston College--slight reach
Georgetown--slight reach (your parent's legacy and interviewing helps get you up to this level)
UVa--slight reach to reach (OOS)
Northwestern--reach
Columbia--reach
Rice--reach
Tulane--slight reach
NYU--slight reach
Cornell--slight reach to reach

yes, CC as in carbon copy. that letter to the admissions office probably won't mean much - but if it gets to the right person it could help.

as more detail.

BC - somewhere imbetween match and reach - so i guess slight reach (based on SATs and GPA)
Gtown - reach - based on SATs and GPA - I do not know of any preference given to legacy students at Gtown although if it is given then maybe a possible slight reach
Nwestern - reach based on SATs and GPA
columbia - ditto to Nwestern
rice - ditto to Nwestern
tulane - most probably a match to safety - as you would qualify as a match - and they want students right now, so I'd say you'd have a very good shot of getting in
NYU - ditto to BC
Rice - ditto to Nwestern
UVa - ditto to Nwestern

NYU and BC fit your profile with your grades and SATs but have such low admittence rates due to the number of applicants it makes it slightly harder for you to get in as you don't stand out (with regards to grades and scores). the rest of the schools have higher average GPAs than you and your SATs (1360 M+V) don't put you anywhere near the 75%ile at any of them.

If you get into contact with department heads at any of the schools I think you might be able to increase your chances. Most schools have tiny Italian departments. My sister double majored in italian and commerce at UVa and only 7 other people graduated with her in the italian department (and UVa has a very good romance language department) - I'm sure this is similar at other schools. That could be your "hook" at some of these schools.

I already paid my Columbia app in early September, so thats a definite (also an almost definite rejection). What are some other matches?

some matches?

Could William and Mary be more of a match? Or is it essentially a difficult our-of-state school?

bump bump bump

im relentless, some more matches? W&M OOS?

Yeah W&M is about just as tough as UVA is. Especially out of state... luckily I am instate! :)

Aren't WM and UVa desperate for Hispanic applicants? UVa is only 3% Hispanic and WM is 5%, most schools are 8-11%

in short - no they arn't

there is a paper put out by the UVa admissions office (from 2003 I believe) that basicly said that while black students have an ungodly advantage over white students, while hispanics have little to no edge. I sure if you google around for it you can find it.

Remember, while virginia and w&m want to be diverse, they strive to be as diverse as virginia. I don't know if virginia's hispanic population is much more than 3 or 4%.

infact, in 2003 at w&m, the % admitted of hispanic applicants was much lower than the % admitted for the entire applicant pool.

UVa published something saying that they give an "advantage" to black students? I that cannot be true.
