Brandon's Mom- your son has stellar stats- surprising that he was not accepted. Perhaps the guidance counselor can shed some light on "why"- disregard this if you already checked into that, I haven't read all the posts.

I have been pulling for all ND CCers to hear good news.

Stats:[ul]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Pretty good, family-oriented, which I heard ND likes.
[] Teacher Recs: Phenomenal
[] Counselor Rec: Terrible, at one point he referred to me as a 'she.' I'm a male, btw.
[] Hook (if any): Dunno
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Kentucky
[] School Type: Fairly competitive public school
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: High GPA, ACT, catholic/low on volunteer hours.
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I was a pretty good applicant, I guess...
[li] going to attend? No. It was a tough decision, but I was accepted at UVA in their highly competitive architecture program, which is really my dream school. And ND is too much money.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:

Irish, I didn't say that legacy doesn't help. There is clearly a preference for legacies. What I did say was that with someone like Brandon, legacy didn't matter. The kid's got perfect SATs, which is better than 99.9% of the applicants, legacy or not. My point is that there is some reason why admissions decided not to accept him, and that reason has nothing to do with legacies getting accepted.

Anyway, I hope that kids like Brandon or GoIrish have an opportunity to get an ND degree, either by getting off the waitlist, or by transferring. IMO, ND should be partial to the kids who in their hearts most want to go there. Instead, you aren't allowed to even express interest in the school in your essay. This results in alot of kids admitted who would be just as happy at an Ivy but who bump a kid who's wanted to be at ND their entire life.

I am hearing about legacies who did not get accepted here in the northeast. It was an extrememly competitive year. But I think if Brandon really wants to attend ND, I wouldn't write ND off. As has been stated, perhaps he will be accepted off the waitlist (let them know you are interested) or as a transfer. I know many students who ultimately did transfer to their first choice school and are very happy.

[ b]Other Factors:** i suppose all the stuff i wrote in other stats should have gone here.

i can see why livelifelove doesn't know his SAT score... i have no idea what mine is and i am a "super serious student"!! i took both the act and sat first thing my jr year to see which i was better at then i figured out it was the act and took that 3 more times with much studying in between and never touched the sat again and i have no idea wat i got on it no sense in remembering such a terrible score lol so don't hate, sweetlax!!

I heard that universities waitlist students who they think will not enroll. They have to protect their yield people say. ND probably thought that Brandon applied to the top schools and had a huge chance of being accepted into those schools. They probably thought those schools were his first choice?

I think he should call ND and tell them that ND is his first choice. Somebody wrote in another forum that a guy got rejected from somewhere, but had his councilor call the school and tell them that it was his first choice and would definitely enroll there. They reversed their decision. Perhaps that's also the case for Brandon?
