**Official Class of 2011 Regular Decision Thread**

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2360 (800 CR, 770 M, 790 W)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math IIC, 800 Bio-M, 790 Chem
[] ACT: n/a
[] GPA: 4.0 UW (school doesn't weight, but probably 4.25-4.33ish W)
[] Rank: n/a
[] Other stats: 5's on AP Bio and Computer Science AB, National Merit Finalist
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I dunno, I barely let anyone read them. Mediocre, I suppose.
[] Teacher Recs: No clue, but one was my AP bio teacher, who chose me for a school excellence award out of all 4 of her classes, so it must have been pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: No clue.
[] Hook (if any): Girl in engineering, maybe?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: F
[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Colorguard/winterguard, tons of community service (both through clubs + outside of school) and tutoring, among other things. Few leadership positions, although not president.
[] Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Most of my ECs weren't related to science/engineering, but my numbers were high? And essays weren't exceptional.
[li] Other thoughts: My first non-acceptance, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would... probably because I'd gotten into Johns Hopkins an hour earlier. Interestingly enough, I thought I'd be more likely to get into Duke than to JHU, but maybe what made a difference was my JHU "essay," which was awesome IMHO.[/ul][/li]Getting waitlisted does not bode well for my Penn decision tomorrow... oh well! Congrats to those who got in and good luck to all!

*Decision: ACCEPTED *

[] Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: The ECs and the essays.
[*] Other thoughts: OMFG!! <3 I was totally not expecting this - got waitlisted by WashU earlier. My GPA is so low!! (And not to mention THREE Cs!!! >__< God the midyear report was horrible) Duke did take 6 or 7 of my school's top 10 students last year - I heard they weren't so generous this year though, only 3 I think so far. I'm so happy!!![/ul]

Oh nothing important, I'm just trying to figure out how much the finaid factor influences the admissions decision for int. students. Duke isn't very informative when it comes to this, all it says is that it's taken into consideration, but not how important it is. But thanks for the info. And a big congrats, of course! Where are you getting decisions from today?

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I or ACT: 2240 (800 M, 720 CR, 720 W)

[] ECs: Several, with leadership positions
[] Essays: Common App was ok, Why Duke was solid
[] Recs: One was decent, I didn't read the other, but I sent a supplemental rec that was very personal, and my counselor rec was very strong
[] Interview: Loved it. It was in a local coffeehouse.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NJ
[] School Type: Competitive public
[] Ethnicity: Indian
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks: None...
[li] Other thoughts: I already got a likely letter so I'm just pumped for Duke Up Close![/li][/ul]

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2320 (740CR/800M/780W) - from single sitting
[] SAT IIs: 800 Bio-M/Chem/Math IIC, 740 Chinese (that's 18th percentile! :p)
[] ACT: 34 (34/34/33/36) - taken once, no essay
[] GPA: 3.85UW/4.66W - has gone up due to midyear grades
[] Rank: School does not rank
[] Other stats: National awards in science (including some from the OP's sample), international awards in music, NMF, 9 AP classes, four 5s on tests so far (and a 3 :D), 600+ hours of community service
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought they were good, and they were editted by my AP Lit teacher, who thought they were good as well.
[] Teacher Recs: School policy says we can't see them; I'm sure one was exceptional.. the other, not so sure.
[] Counselor Rec: Great, I made the effort of having us really get to know each other in junior year.
[] Hook (if any): Aforementioned (inter)national awards? shrug Oh, I found a cure for skin cancer, although the only people who might ever truly appreciate the extent of my contributions to the field of oncology are myself and my research mentor at Georgetown (go Final Four Hoyas!). :)
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: points left
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]
Other Factors:*[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: National Science Bowl, music performance, science volunteering (demonstrations for elementary school kids and biotech labs for middle school students), Honor Societies
[] Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Poor grades, especially among applicants from my school. The trend I notice in friends who have been accepted is that Duke likes "great/perfect grades" students. I am also completely unaware of whether that second teacher recommendation could have hurt my application, since it didn't demonstrate depth in my school studies (both letters were from science teachers, albeit different subjects.)
[] Other thoughts: This doesn't bode well for the HYPS decisions coming out today and tomorrow. :( I do not think I will try to get off the wait-list. I applied to Duke because of its merit scholarships, which I am unlikely to get if I have been wait-listed, so there is no reason to choose Duke over one of my highest choices, which has offered me a great FA package. I still love Duke, though! I have so many friends there who love their academic environment, and I know many more who will be heading there soon from their ED contracts. Good luck to everyone with their college endeavors! :)[/ul]

[] Extracurriculars: Natural Helpers, NHS (President), Relay for Life (Event Chair), Student Council (all four years), Forensics (went to state three years in a row), Sophomore class Vice President, Youth Court
[] Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I actually applied Early Decision and was deferred. I didn't expect to get in Regular Decision
[*] Other thoughts: Well, it actually doesn't bother me as much as it did when I was deferred. I had already decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to go to American University (I definitely prefer the location over North Carolina) so my deposits for American were already turned in and I'm waiting for my roommate assignment![/ul]
