@ spartan: unfortunately for people like you and me, Duke isn't fond of people w/o 4.0 unweighted GPAs... sigh let's forget it and wish for better luck during late march/early april

wow I didn't apply to Duke but I was thinking about it..dang they are brutal this year! Outright rejecting so many great applicants..those who got in really have something to be proud of!! congrats

Stats:
SAT: 1270/1860
SAT IIs:
ACT:
GPA: 3.9 W
Rank: 1/489
Subjective:
Essays: ehh...pretty straight
Teacher Recs: EXCELLENT
Counselor Rec: doesn't like me too much
Hook (if any):
Location/Person:
State or Country: NC
School Type: large public
Ethnicity:
Gender: male
Other Factors:
Extracurriculars: 3 varsity letters, part time work 30 hours per week since freshmen year, 2 or 3 leadership positions in clubs...pretty good ECs.
Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: well, a lot of qualified applicants and not a lot of spots. I definitely could have worked harder in school and on the SAT and on my application in general.
Other thoughts: Well, now I make up my mind between UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest. Maybe Dartmouth will pull through. Either way it's a tough decision as it is. Congrats to the dirty dozen!

waitlisted is just as bad as rejection i think. from the looks of it, there are more waitlists than rejecteds... which means there's a fat chance any of us will actually get in on waitlist...

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2240: 770 M, 730 CR, 740 W

[] Other stats:

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Pretty good, for the most part...my Why Duke essay wasn't that spectacular though haha...
[] Teacher Recs: Really strong
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty good. My guidance counselor knows me well as a person but not so much as a student, if that makes any sense...
[] Supplemental Rec: I sent in an additional rec from the board of my community talking about my leadership and volunteer work...
[li] Hook (if any): I sent in an art supplemental.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MD
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian...the worst =\
[] Gender: M

[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars: Appointed representative of my community, President of National Art Honor Society, County art program, soccer, internship at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NASA National Space Club Scholars, some other stuff...
[/li]

[] Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: No one has gotten in from my school as of yet eh. The day the admission officer from Duke came to visit, one kid *ed her off because he was being obnoxious all through the information session. I don't think that's why I personally was waitlisted, but it may have been a factor. Also, my test scores could have been higher...and I could have definitely touched up my "Why Duke" essay...

[li] Other thoughts: Congrats to everyone that got in! Duke made a smart choice in waitlisting me because it wasn't really anywhere near my top choice school. This decision just doesn't bode well for the 5 other competitive colleges I applied to. Anyway, it's just college right? :D
[/li]

Cooledge: no offense but Tufts syndrome doesn't apply to Duke, and being Asian probably didn't work in your favor. I guess they aren't joking about rejecting 50% of Vals. Sorry :(

Yeah dreamscape, it sucks, but its better to just forget it. I really wanted to go to Duke though. W/e.

Rosh, I kinda hoped that playing varsity sports year-round while still getting good grades in tough classes would at least push me to the Duke wait-list. I evidently was wrong. Go figure.

For those who are pessimistic about other colleges because of a waitlist/reject from Duke. Do NOT be!

Don't be mistaken!
Duke is an incredibly selective school and has SAT averages higher than that of Brown, Columbia, or Penn.

Here were some results from my school last year.
Six people applied to Duke.
Only two got in.. me and a girl who turned down Duke for Brown.

Here's where the four who didn't get into Duke are at now.
Girl who was waitlisted by Duke: Princeton
Guy who was rejected by Duke: Columbia
Girl who was rejected by Duke: Penn
Guy who was rejected by Duke: NYU Presidential Scholar

I, someone who got into Duke, didn't get into Princeton, Columbia, or Penn.
College admissions is so random! The only advantage I could have imagined in my case was SATs..

Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to everyone else with other colleges!
