I was waitlisted from Brown this year and it was my first choice. Now that it is after May 1st I thought it would be a good idea to start this thread to hear from other waitlistees on CC and any news concerning the waitlist.

Yes! I don’t have to prowl around anymore! Haha
I thought it was helpful how the 2012 waitlistees let one another know any new information after one called the Admission Office, when they received letters, etc. Here’s my little contribution even though you originally requested the infomation, pinklady!
This is from another thread (in the College Admissions Forum) about waitlists.

Good luck to all of us~

I saw this in another thread but thanks sviola for copying it because its very helpful and informing for all waitlistees who haven’t seen it yet. For some reason I thought Brown took over 100 kids off the waitlist last year but I guess I’m just confusing them with another school.

So, according to these stats, I probably might not get off of the waitlist.

Ahh, oh well. I tried and fought and I’m proud of the place I’m standing on. That’s all I need to know.

I actually think that those odds, while not promising, are pretty decent…and much better than many other schools! Brown is the only school that I accepted a place on the waitlist for and here’s to hoping for good news for everyone!

some of this data looks questionable. It’s very improbable that the same number of applicants accepted a spot on the waitlist for 4 different years (2004, 2006-2008)

I just called them to ask:

1) “If you (Brown) do decide to use the waitlist, will you take into consideration a student’s ability (or lack thereof) to pay or, in other words, is admissions still need-blind?”
Answer: Admissions is still need-blind.

2) “Do you (Brown) expect to use the waitlist this year?”
Answer: As of right now, they are not sure.

The girl (probably a student) sounded like she had an attitude; I was about to ask her if there was a problem, but I held my tongue. I just think sometimes people (especially those in admissions) should stop to think how rough this time of year is for nervous seniors. Even if people are calling to ask the same question, don’t have an attitue; I have no way of knowing what the person before me asked. (Just me ranting! Hope this helps clear up any grey spots for now.)

Thanks for calling. I sure hope they will use the waitlist and at least its still need blind.

i read from last year’s thread that brown offered a few waitlistees admission to the following year’s class, which for us would be 2014. does anyone know how frequently this happens/if theyre likely to do so again this year?

I’m planning on sending a letter to the admissions office updating them on my accomplishments this semester, hoping that that will do the trick-- does anyone know if there’s a specific person we’re supposed to send them to, or if it’s too late to send a letter?

I don’t think it’s too late but you should probably send one as soon as possible. I sent one last week. I sent one by email to my regional admissions officer and another copy in the mail to the admissions office.

I can confirm that Brown still does not know if it is using the waitlist. And I can confirm that it is need blind for the waitlist.

As for those stats posted above – I could have sworn there were no kids taken off the waitlist for fall 2006.

hbs: Yes, this did happen last year. I don’t think it is a typical scenario (I hadn’t heard about it before, and I’ve been interviewing applicants for 30+ years).

And yes, it’s OK to send a followup letter (highly recommended, actually, plus expressing that you will accept an offer of admission) – and I’d get it out ASAP.

Thanks fireandrain for keeping us updated on the waitlist. I also thought that Brown didn’t use the waitlist in 2006.

Does anyone have any new info concerning the waitlist? I’m starting to be so sick of being in limbo all the time. I know Brown is really busy but its so hard not knowing anything.

^I’m with you, pinklady! I did a really good job not thinking about it at all in April (I didn’t even come on the Brown CC boards), but now that it’s getting closer to waitlist decisions, I’m getting a little anxious and excited just to know. Hmm…I’m not sure that I want to know how many people accepted a place on the waitlist until after the waitlist round…probably better that way, IMO.

dang, I thought my parents had sent out the letter I wrote, but apparently not. I sent it out this morning. my guidance counselor did call though, so at least though know I’d made some effort.

the website still says they don’t know if they’ll use the waitlist.

Hey~

I guess the stats from the other forum’s “Brown waitlist statistics” post weren’t 100% reliable. Still, with respect to Brown’s waitlist letter that stated about 500 students accept a position, 450 seems like a reasonable, if not generous, estimate. I guess we’ll really never know how much the economy and the interest in Brown will change this year until everything is over, though I know (or hope?) each and every one of us (myself included!) still maintain a huuuuge enthusiasm and hope to go.

Anyway, I called the admission office this morning and they still needed a little bit more time to count up the number of students they are expecting. For now, the best thing we can do sounds like studying for our AP tests (if we’re taking them) and making the most of our senior year. I don’t want any of us to regret stressing out through the last few days/weeks of our senior year as we slave over these CC boards, especially if Brown’s yield is very high this year.

Aside from that, I would really love it if we could all take turns calling the admission office and updating everybody else on the forum (Thanks AmbitiousMind!). It’s ridiculously inconvenient for me, because I live on the west coast and I don’t wake up early enough, nor do I leave school early enough, to call regularly.

Keep your chin up, everybody! I’m feeling your pain. Personally, I know my chances are very low, but I don’t think students ever know if they’ll be chosen off the waitlist, that is, until they receive a call. Seeing that we’re all wait-listed, I’m sure we have the talent to succeed somewhere~ :)

Is there a chance that they would take about 350 or + students off the waitlist?

I’ll pray for that!

I’m hoping they take off at least 100.

in the waitlist letter they said “as little as none off the waitlist, to as much as 50” implying 50 max? hopefully not… ><
