[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Meh...
[] Weaknesses: No interview...
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Passion. I busted my ass off to focus on Chem and applied for ChemE and honestly, it showed. Aside from that, my "interest" part of the application was geared toward science. My books, my recent exhibitions, my publications, etc. It was either science-y, or music-y :P. I went to a Columbia orientation where an adcom said this was exactly what they were looking for, so I just wrote very honestly about where my passions lie.
[/ul]General Comments: I look forward to meeting all the accepted Columbia students! And for those who are still searching, the right college will come to you! Good luck to all in finishing this year!

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: my prolific activities. my motto is "do them all,do them well"
[] Weaknesses:my SAT score
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[/li]

It had to do with my attempts to fully immerse myself in my activities. I don't have much time in a day but I try to use every last minute of it, but ensure that it brings success. I was afraid my SAT score would keep me out. I took it three times and got a high 600 in one section everytime i tok it for some reason. I did not improve much per taking despite my great amount of studying. sometimes testing is just not for some students, if not, you better hope that your grades are very competitive. i think i'm most happy and proud that i did this without a defined "hook." for kids that are like me, i encourage you to work extra hard because you won't be given the acceptance letter easily.

Reflection
Strengths: I'm guessing my book is the only thing that kept me from getting rejected outright? I had certain interesting points in my application.
Weaknesses: Uh, SAT scores aren't good enough, essay too long and boring?, maybe they got fed up with the long resume I sent...
General Comments: Hmm...I did get to eat a big meal of pork chops and breakfast potatoes after that devastating moment of realization in which the word "deferred" registered in my feeble brain. So I think I feel better? Still hopeful, even though a lot of people are saying that The Deferred have no chance. Life goes on, and as a writer my pen will go on and that means I'll live. Maybe one day I'll write a novel called "The Deferred". Haha, not very funny, but congrats to those who got in. To all those deferred, see you in the Big Pool. To those rejected, good colleges are out there waiting for your talents. Fate is inescapable.

dude my MIT results come out on monday to anyone who cares on this cold site

is it just me or does columbia not really like the 2200 range ppl? it's either 2300+ or 2150+?

[] Essays: Wrote one about "The Haka" and how it has shaped me as a person and my views. It emphasized my New Zealand background
[] Teacher Recommendation:1 from my calc and 1 from my chem. I didn't get the chance to read them but from my national merit essay, my math teacher wrote one of the best recommendations
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty much amazing. It traced my coming from NZ and how i've thrived in Alaska
[] Additional Rec: The professor with whom I'm doing my research. He provided a work-ethic viewpoint and gave legitimacy to my research
[] Interview: went well. didn't hurt, but i don't think it gave me enough prompt to tip the balance
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Alaska
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity:Chinese
[] Gender:Male
[] Income Bracket:60k-70k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):Unique background. Born in China, lived in NZ for 8 years, and had freshman year there, and then applying from Alaska as one of the top students despite the massive change in the educational system when i switched from NZ
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:Math, Science, History. I think the best part of my application was the praise my math teacher probably put on the rec, and how my counselor mentioned that I was modest about my knowledge, and that i would rather help others than to study ahead and overachieve\
[] Weaknesses: No musical talent at all.
[li] Why you think you were accepted: Kick-ass recommendations. My research at UAA helped me a lot. Also a New Zealander ( i am officially a NZ citizen, i have a NZ passport) who was schooled in NZ and is applying from Alaska, and who was probably the only one applying ED? (im not sure, but i know i was the only one applying from Anchorage). Also i kept in touch regularly with the admissions officer for Alaska. i even met him at the Engineering invitationals the past summer and we had a pseudo interview (it was basically my why Columbia speech) and he was extremely excited. Then he came up with Barnard and presented Columbia at my school and had breakfast with my counselor, so that might have helped my getting in.
[/li]

Lastly, i'm not the typical Asian. I don't play the violin or the piano, or any music instrument for that matter. I don't play tennis or competitive table tennis. Instead, i spend most of my ECs, 20 hrs a week at least, on varsity sports: Nordic skiing, XC running and 40 and 800 track and field. Also, excuse my for saying this, but most Asians tend to be really smart, but don't really help others. My teacher and counselor i think highlighted that i would help my classmates with stuff on the current chapter rather than slacking off doing other things/ working ahead to get an advantage over everyone.
[/ul]

General Comments:

IT was ridiculous waiting because my best friend was accepted to Dartmouth 25 hours before me, and i didn't want to be labeled as the 1st deferral or the 1st rejection of the year. lol
