[] Essays:My Common App essay was really bad. I had a lot of mistakes that could of cost me admission. However, I emailed them and they let me resubmit my essay. My Why CMU? Essay was really good. I pretty much fit every single detail I knew about CMU in that one page.
[] Teacher Recs:One was amazing and the other was average
[] Counselor Rec: Did not see. I don’t know my counselor so I’m guessing it was average.
[] Hook (if any): First Generation Student. My school has an amazing relationship with CMU. When I attended SBW each admissions officer was like “So Hows things going at XYZ High School” We send several kids to CMU every year so I think that helped out a lot.

Decision:ACCEPTED H&SS

Stats:

* SAT:2130 (790 Math, 710 Writing, 630 Reading)

 • SAT IIs: 760 Math II, 620 Chem, 770 Chinese w/ Listening
 • ACT: none
 • GPA: 3.82W by CMU standards
 • Rank:top 30%?
 • Other stats:

Subjective:

* Essays:My Common App essay was pretty good. My “Why CMU?” essay was really good. I made sure they knew I was interested and understood my stuff.

 • Teacher Recs: One was pretty good and the other was better
 • Counselor Rec: I’m thinking I surprised my counselor because whenever she doubted my ability to do something, I did it so that must have helped.
 • Hook (if any): Genuine interest, help from students

Location/Person:

* State or Country:NJ

 • School Type:Public (competitive)
 • Ethnicity:Asian
 • Gender:Male

Other Factors: Memorized CMU facts like the back of my hand
General Comments: My interest in CMU as well as my mix of technical skills and the arts were big factors. My GPA is okay and SATs are meh, but I’m decent at writing essays.

I am surprised you didn’t get in space pope! Which school did you apply to?

@mrkangaroo123 seriously!

I applied to SCS. I may have gotten in if I applied to engineering or physics, my other two interests, but really I’m very happy with my defferal. My grades senior year are much better than my grades every other year, so I think I have a very good shot to get in come RD time.

Haha byuan09, you sound quite arrogant there. How is one to know how great their essay is and how great their recommendations are? Essays are mere opinion and since when do you get to see recommendations? Also, memorizing facts about CMU? Wow, obsessive much?

What the hell byuan09! your hook is your genuine interest? How is that a hook, everyone who applied ED should have genuine interest in attending CMU! I agree entirely with username2010. You’re definitely way too obsessed with this school for memorizing CMU facts like the back of your hand. Your SAT2s are dismal as well. I could get that chem score if I were high on crack, weed and getting my stomach pumped while passed out from alcohol. I wouldn’t be proud of that Chinese w/listening score either if I were you. Oh well, good job for getting in anyway.
