OFFICIAL Class of 2015 "Ask a Student Anything" Thread

@hahagooman
I did not take 61. You have the recommended preparation for all but possibly 106X.

31X may be learnt largely by pset (5-10 hrs), though you may spend 1-2 hrs reading. I regarded this as a hard class, and once attended 9 office hours in a week.

51 does not involve much reading. Many people find this class hard, and many people find it quite easy; you might not need more than 2 hrs a week for the psets.

Consider this (2007) [CS intro class guide by Mehran Sahami.](http://see.stanford.edu/materials/icspmcs106a/03-course-placement.pdf</a>)
I’m not going to suggest you reconsider 106X; it can just be particularly hard. Think 5-20 hours (somewhat less if you gnaw at the bountiful assistance provided, which overly proud students tend not to do); it can be a defining class of one’s quarter.

How are you synchronizing these classes? (Math 51 + Humanities + Any of the Above is a workable first quarter.)

@GeekNerd
I’m definitely going for IHUM+Math 51+Physics 61 Fall Quarter. Other than that, I’m hoping to get into an IntroSem. If not, then I will take either 31X (though I’ve also heard about this Engr 31X as an alternative?) or 106X (actually had a hard time deciding between this class and 106A since Mehran’s lectures are pretty good).

Also, is the CME series worth taking instead of Math 50s if you may declare some kind of engineering later? I’m getting the feeling from the descriptions that it’s a narrow path? I don’t want to lock myself down too early yet.

thank you so much, shayonsaleh, for your answer about cedro! another question I have is how big the desks are? I’m thinking about bring a 20 inch computer monitor since i think it’d be cool to dual screen with my macbook pro. but the question is, will it take up a large portion of the desk? basically, are the desks small? i dont want to bring it if its going to leave no space for me to lay out my textbooks and study

^Many students I know have monitors that size. If anything, it leaves more room than a laptop because you can put the monitor near the back, have a thin keyboard, and use the entire front of the desk for work. Also most desks I’ve seen have extensions that let you add another 8 inches or so to the rear. If you want the exact dimensions I can measure.

Definitely not. I’ve seen people with professional 30" screens and they still have space to do their written psets.

Hw much change do I need for the first quarter? By change I mean for buying things ranging from socks to movie tickets to gifts etc.

Also, where do you recommend getting a bike from? (under $200)
Thanks :)

So i just realized that we have to take a placement test if we want to take the 40 series. I was initially planning on doing 45 in the autumn, then 41 and 43 in the rest of the year. I got a 5 on calc BC and i’ve taken calc based mechanics at my local university, but i’m still nervous about the placement test. how hard is it? apparently we have to score high enough to be able to start with 45, which i really want to do so i can finish the 40 series freshman year. even though ive already taken calc based mechanics, im super rusty…

Also, what are the chances of getting an introsem if you’re third on a waitlist?

Imo you have a pretty good chance of getting into the introsem if you really want it and it’s not super super popular/strict. A lot of people change their classes around the first couple of weeks of school and a couple spots might open up. You can even talk to (or email) the prof and express your interest and s/he might just let you in. That’s happened to a bunch of people I know since a couple students over the max is often not a big deal.

Clowiebear:
yeah you should be able to get it- just go to the first day and see what happens.

As for bikes under 200 dollars, your options are Walmart-type bikes or used. I thought I would try to get a used bike of craigslist, but come NSO that was the last thing I wanted to do, especially since I didn’t have a car then.

Change. Hmm that’s a toughy. I don’t really know your spending habits. Do you not have a credit/debit card?

Enigma:

Isn’t the physics placement new this year? At the end of the day, you can probably talk to UAR or the physics department and try to persuade them to let you take the 40s series. At least in languages, the placement tests are meant to be a guide (except for those interested in placing out of the requirement).

Alright thanks guys :)

by change though i just meant money generally. i’m just wondering if i need a job or if my summer savings will last me through a quarter.

BTW have any of you guys been a part of frosh council?

^depends on how much you have, how much you plan to spend, and how much your family will contribute.

Have fun tomorrow, everybody!

Great class! I learned so much! Professor Starkman is the most awesome, helpful professor. She is kind, accessible, funny, super smart and shows you how to succeed both in the humanities and sciences. She makes it very clear her job is to support student learning throughout our college career and beyond. Take her, her courses are best thing you can do for yourself!

How selective for juniors transferring to Stanford from another 4 year institution?

I am one of those kids who slacked off in high school, but got into the state university. Stanford has always been my dream school. So, I am thinking about transferring to Stanford after sophomore year.
