• Weaknesses: ECs were mediocre, essay wasn’t good, no interview, not a whole lot of demonstrated interest in politics/ IR.

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was a strong candidate[/li][/ul]General Comments: I wasn’t considering American too much until I got my packet and found out I was accepted into the three year cohort public health program which I really really wanted! I also was accepted to the honors program and received about 40,000 in aid so it has quickly turned to be a top choice!

senioritapipita and smwhtslght

You have exceptional SAT and AP scores. I have a daughter who is a junior and although she is a 4.0 GPA in AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP Language, her SAT scores don’t compare. Are you two just naturally brilliant, did you study countless hours, did you take prep classes, and/or do you go to great schools that prep you well for the tests? I need to figure out how to improve her scores.

Turns out I received around $38,000 in financial aid. $18,000 of it was the Dean’s Scholarship for academics, $10000 as a need-based grant, $5500 in loans, $2000 in work-study, and $2000 for the Champion’s of Excellence scholarship in United Nations. Resubmitted by FAFSA a couple days ago with the updates from our tax returns, and it dropped my family’s EFC considerably, so I don’t know if they will offer me an increase in need-based aid.

May make it affordable.

To the person who asked about scholarships, I got $15,000 a year. You can see my stats in post #5. They totally screwed me with need based, though, so I’ll probably go somewhere more affordable like Mt. Holyoke or Bryn Mawr :/

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed interest in the school and it paid off. I think my recommendations were strong although I did not read them. I honestly did not think I would get accepted. [/li][/ul]General Comments: This is now one of my top choices. I received a good amount of financial aid, but there is a great amount in loans (which I don’t want). If I can figure out the expenses, I’m definitely going here! I loved it when I visited over the summer. It is a great environment.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: High UW GPA, Good SAT Scores (for my school), Class rank
[] Weaknesses: Lack of APs, Noncompetitive school, ECs could be better
[li] Why you think you were accepted: I think it’s probably because of my essay and recommendations combined with a good GPA. [/li] [/ul]General Comments:
I am really excited I got in. Over the past few years several people have applied to American from my HS and have been rejected. American is right now tied for number 1 on my college list with the University of Miami and it’s going to come down to finances on which one I choose to attend.

@girlsrus Hi, I did A LOT of SAT practice tests, probably about 15 full ones and a few extra ones on CR (my weakest subject). For SATIIs I think I just took tests on the subjects that I felt comfortable with (and did 2-3 practice tests before hand). For APs I just go to a school where APs are hugely emphasized, so most of the AP classes were pretty in depth. But really the only advice I can give is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! I hope this helped!

I have already gotten into 4 schools, three of which have higher average academic requirements (the other schools had applicants with higher SAT scores, GPA’s, ect.) I was honestly shocked when I didn’t get in, but I didn’t really want to go to American. I think if people really want to go to this school, it’s all about interest. They care more about knowing that you want to be there more than anywhere else over good SAT scores and GPA

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I just stood out, and showed my dedication.[/li][/ul]General Comments:
I’m really excited, but nervous, I don’t know if I can afford AU!

I was accepted for Spring 2013, and offered a place in WMP, I’m at loss as to whether to participate in WMP or not.

Did everyone receive aid info in the admissions packet??? I only got the acceptance letter…but the envelope was open in the corner:S Lol, please tell me, I’m searching everywhere on the internet and can’t find it!

@cholias Yes, I received my aid package along with the rest of the admissions packet. Were you accepted for fall admission or WMP/Spring Admission? My reason for asking is because other posters have noted that WMP acceptees do not receive financial aid. But if you want to be completely certain, you can check online as well. In another AU thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/american-university/1293922-does-anyone-know-when-rd-decisions-released-13.html</a>

post #186 basically gives “directions” on how to find your FinAid online. I didn’t try it since mine came in the mail, but the response implies that it worked. Good luck!!

:/ Fall admission and I followed the instructions on the post and apparently there is some error and I don’t have anything awarded…everything should have been fine with what I submitted. Now I get to worry until Monday! Thanks for the help anyway LoveEssence…

^In the same boat as you, chocolias. I logged onto myAU account and the FA link says in red type that there is no information available because of several possible listed reasons. I’ll be contacting their FA office on Monday as well to see what’s up because I too assumed everything would be fine. I know they received my HS grades (otherwise I wouldn’t have been accepted) and it would be ALL my grades since I graduated in 2006 (one of the reasons is submitting HS Sr Yr Fall grades), and I have confirmation that my FAFSA was received by them on time and I used the IRS Data Link Tool, so all the numbers should match as well. Basically none of the possible reasons seem like they apply to me. Odd.

I took a study abroad gap year turtlerock…perhaps they’re biased against nontradish lol. Goodluck getting it sorted out.But out of curiosity, I know other colleges have a special thing for students entering more than one year late, does AU not care at all?

***Did everyone’s acceptance letter include a little personalized comment? Mine was study abroad…

Yeah, mine was personalized with a paragraph about my being multilingual (through studying in school, not because my family speaks it)! I thought it was a nice touch.

It seems that AU treats all applicants as traditional students - academically. Financially different makes a little sense depending on if the student is considered independent and so forth, but I’ll see come Monday and be sure to post a follow-up.

I took a . . . uh . . . 5 year “gap” and the first 4 were more of an obligation.

Well “go you” for deciding to go to college  & I’ll post followup too!

Sugarmountain, yea I thought it was a nice touch too…everybody else had that as well then?? Plus the university college thing? I saw some others had the latter…

& I’m wondering, after being accepted I did a search about how hard it really was to get in, and people online say that it’s not hard to get in since only so many people can pay the big tuition without much financial aid. What do you think? Tho I might want to post this convo in another thread lol…?(new to cc)
