*Official Class of 2016 University of Michigan RA Decisions Thread*

Exactly, because I have 2060 SAT (690W, 770M, 600CR) and 110 TOEFL and yet i have been deferred.

Still PedroMFiahlo I am sure you must have excelled in your essays and ECs…!!!

Yeah…my scores aren’t the best. My essays and ecs are definitely what got me in. I also sent them an e-mail right after receiving my deferral letter emphasising how interested I still was in UM.
No way to know if it helped at all, but it doesn’t hurt to try.
Good luck to you all!

Accepted today:)
so excited its unreal…31 ACT,3.95 UW GPA, ranked 2nd in highschool class…OOS

Congrats, you guys! I think they must be only giving EA deferrals/new decisions out right now. RobertNewmanIII, I have about the same stats as you plus legacy and I am waiting for some sort of additional information after my February deferral. I hope I can have your luck. x3

sparrowo3o thank you! I think you will do fine
I didnt have a legacy and I got in.

Accepted into Art & Design!

3.8 unweighted, 2160 SAT, 720 SAT II (literature), awesome recs from art and science teacher, various art awards and exhibitions, pretty good essays (I actually had fun writing them)

Still waiting on LSA to hopefully get in for creative writing. :)

Hey guys, I have a quick question.
I applied on Feb. 1, the last day to apply, do you guys have a general idea of when I should hear back? The suspense is killing me.

I was accepted yesterday to LSA after being deferred RD in February.

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 23/642
AP (place score in parenthesis): Eng Lang & Comp (4), US History (5)

Summer Activities: Drexel Summer Eng, Mentorship 2010, NJ Gov School of Engineering and Tech (NJ GSET) 20111
Essays: Pretty Banging. I wrote the supplement about being a nerd
Teacher Recommendation: I can’t imagine they were bad
Counselor Rec: Same

School Type: Public [I’m in an internal program for the humanities]

Reflection
Strengths: My gender
Weaknesses: No super leadership or awesome awards
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m pretty chill
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Worth mentioning, so far, I’ve gotten into UIUC electrical engineering

General Comments: There’s a decent chance I’ll go here. I like being able to learn tons but also feel unbinding pride in my school. It’ll be between here, UIUC and Cornell

When did you hear? Congrats!

I’m so excited! Now I have a good excuse for my parents to let me do an OOC college visit. :3

PhysicsPlease, when did you send in your application? Were you EA? And I was wondering why you would choose Michigan Engineering over Cornell Engineering?

Decision: Deferred CoE

Objective:

ACT: -
SAT II: 800 Math II, 790 Physics, 790 World History, 770 Biology
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Not given, but by estimation 3.53 generally A’s or A-'s in everything and then a B or B- in Spanish (I try in that class, I’m just kind of language stupid)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Not given, but probably top 40%
AP (place score in parenthesis): School does not offer AP’s, only “honors” but I self studied AP CS and got a 5
IB (place score in parenthesis): -
Senior Year Course Load: “Honors Calc” “Honors Advanced Physics” No honors level humanities exists.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): ACSL National Qualifier, a bunch of wins in regional cs tourtanments I forgot to mention in application.
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): football team, (science olympiad), grade president, computer science team, lots of other minor ones
Job/Work Experience: -
Volunteer/Community service: Held job at tech startup for last year or so… probably 200+ hrs of random community service at soup kitchen and elsewhere.
Summer Activities: 3 Nols trips and working at startup
Essays: 8/10 common app. 6/10 Michigan
Teacher Recommendation: Physics and History, probs really great.
Counselor Rec: Probably not great, I like my counselor but he has lots of other kids who he needs to get into HYPS whom he justifiably focuses his energy on.
Additional Rec: From employer, I imagine its stellar.
Interview: -
Other:
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant): -
School Type: Private, top 20 in USA
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: $250,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): -
Reflection:
Strengths: Standardized test scores, high school
Weaknesses: Essays, GPA (in fairness though, kids with my gpa at my high school frequently go to ivies), “demonstrated interest” (did not tour and they probably thought I should have)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t think I’m a fantastic writer and my essays may have shown it. Also, kids from my school tend feel very entitled to treat Michigan as a safety and I’m not sure the admission officers understood that is not me. I really wanted to go there.

General Comments: I’m keeping my fingers crossed to hear back from Michigan in April. I really hope RD deferred isn’t tantamount to rejection. I sent them an update letter I really liked and hopefully that could help sway them. Congrats to all those who did get in.

^You look like a great candidate! (That is scary.) Good luck!

“Also, kids from my school tend feel very entitled to treat Michigan as a safety and I’m not sure the admission officers understood that is not me. I really wanted to go there.”

Until the matriculation rate to Michigan from your school goes up, I’m certain this is going to continue to be a fairly common occurrence.

What happens if you get deferred RD? When would you hear back?

Decision: Accepted LSA

Additional Rec: -
Interview: -

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): IL
Country (if international applicant): -
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White/ Asain
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): -

Reflection:
Strengths: SAT II score, strong leadership, intense course rigor, well written essays
Weaknesses: Very little community service, not exceptional grades, very low ACT score
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my application is a testament to the idea that statistics aren’t the only thing considered when colleges admit students. My grades and scores at face value were low, however my holistic application showed a dedicated and thoughtful student.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Congrats! When’d you find out?

LittleRedHood, I applied RD at the end of December and heard earlier in March, I believe. I don’t know if I would choose Michigan over Cornell…I really haven’t made a solid decision at all. I’m kind of 30% UMich, 30% Cornell, 27% UIUC, 23% any of the other 7 schools I applied to
