General Comments & Advice:
Congratulations to anyone else who was accepted!!!

Decision: Accepted
Major: Undeclared - Business & Economics

Objective:
SAT I: 1900 composite
Unweighted GPA: 3.15 out of 4.0
UC GPA: 3.4
Rank: 450/710 or something like that roughly
AP: APUSH (3), AP Lang (3)
Senior Year Course Load: It was okay I guess, I’m taking 3 AP classes and 3 other classes.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: None really, I was in yearbook for two years though.
Job/Work Experience: Freelance artist.
Volunteer/Community service: Barely any.
Essays: I thought they were pretty strong- I showed a lot of passion, interest, and dedication in what I do and what I believe in.

Other
State: Out of state
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Low income
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: My essays probably
Weaknesses: GPA for sure
Why you think you were accepted: I think my essays and work experience were good and my GPA was low but my SAT overrode it.

General Comments: If you’re looking to get in, grades aren’t everything, make sure your essays are strong and show passion. Make sure your SAT score is good because I’m pretty sure my decent SAT score made up for my terrible GPA. If you were going through tough times and whatever, make that clear to them because I think that’s a huge part of why I got in, as that also impacts how they look at your GPA.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 630 R, 610 M, 800 W
ACT: 31
SAT II: 670 LIT, 690 US H
UC GPA: 3.7
AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (4), APLANG (5), AP WORLD (4)
Senior Year Course Load: Christian Lifestyles/Eastern Religions, Spanish IV, Web Design, AP Biology, AP Literature, AP Government, Honors Economics

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Yearbook (Editor-in-Chief), Youth & Government (Newspaper Editor, Delegation Historian), Painting class every saturday, photography, weekly guitar lessons, other random stuff/clubs at school.
Job/Work Experience: Homework helper at inner-city center for underprivileged kids in Downtown Los Angeles
Volunteer/Community service: Tree People, Heal the Bay, Midnight Mission, working at nursing homes
Personal Statement: I wrote one about photography and paralleled my perspective on life to that of a camera (cropping, changing aperture, exposure, etc etc) and how my world has changed because of photography. the second one was about growing up in Los Angeles surrounded by stereotypes about the glam of hollywood, and all that jazz, and I basically destroyed those stereotypes and showed how growing up in LA has shaped me as a person, made me more open minded, allowed me to meet people of all races, sexual orientations, etc. These explanations don’t really do my essays justice, but I’m very proud of them and I had fun writing them.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Spanish/Politics
State (if domestic applicant): California

Income Bracket: Upper-Middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths: Personal statement and grades
Weaknesses: EC’s maybe?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Unfortunately (fortunately for me, though) UC’s focus A LOT on test scores & grades. But in addition, I think my essays really showed what I could offer to the UCSC community

General Comments: Santa Cruz is the only school I would consider going to if I stayed in California. I’ve been pretty set on going to the east coast, but with the weather there and the price of the private liberal arts schools I applied to, Santa Cruz is pretty high on my list

Decision: Accepted

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Intensive Psychology
State: California

My essay was very good and I’ve taken about 72 units with mostly A’s… unfortunately 3 5 unit c’s out of 22 classes can make your 3.6 go to a 3.1 = 3=
Next week I have an interview with UCSC for a scholarship for 20k for transfer students though, competing with two other kids from my school so wish me luck : )!

strength: again i cannot self evaluate very well on this, maybe it was my essays, I was very honest in them and did not hold back on what i wanted to convey in them
weakness: possibly lack of interesting awards or extracurriculars?

Comments: I’m so grateful that I got into this amazing school. Although it’s not my top choice, it is definitely a school I’m considering. Congrats to those who got in, and for those who didn’t, don’t let it bring you down. Its what you put into it, not what you get out of it. You will be successful at any school you choose to go to as long as you make the right decisions and work hard to pursue whatever it is you want to achieve.

Accepted

SAT: 2110 (1430/1600)
GPA: 4.4~
Solid ECs, good essays, in-state
Major: Undeclared Life Sciences

I applied to UCSC as a backup (wouldn’t mind being in its beautiful atmosphere!), but it seems like they got pretty harsh this year! That and the UC acceptances are just kinda weird overall. One of my friends has AMAZING ECs, decent grades, and has taken a good number of APs, but was waitlisted for UCSC (but also admitted to UCI). Another friend with less significant ECs, lower grades and a less rigorous schedule was admitted to UCSC. Just goes to show how unpredictable admissions can really be!

Good luck to everyone!! :)

Reflection
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Extracurriculars, extracurriculars, extracurriculars, essays, SAT
[]Weaknesses: GPA ( T____T ), … perhaps major of choice?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think the obvious scientific focus that I placed in my extracurricular activities and essays (and the whole overcoming adversity part of my essays), as well as my relatively decent SAT score were the only reasons I even had a chance at a lot of colleges. Just goes to show that GPA isn’t everything.
[/ul]General Comments: Wasn’t planning on going to UC Santa Cruz but I’m glad I got in. Also got into UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. Rejected from UC Davis and UC San Diego. Waiting (but not expecting anything) for UC Berkeley and UCLA. Good luck everyone!
