Official Class of 2018 Thread

Cantabile7, cool! No, haven’t gone to visit at all yet.

So, on Common App I’m really not seeing any word limit for the supplement… Is there a word limit?

I’m not sure how much of my personality shows in my supplement.

Wellesley ED acceptance rates

2013- (134/370) 37%
2012- (154/304) 51%
2011- 51%
2010- 59%
2009- 51.4%
Just compilation of data I found online…
It dropped so significantly last year…

Cantabile7: At Discover Wellesley Weekend, an admissions officer told parents at an info sesh that the supplement is where they want to see what Wellesley can do for you, i.e. how you will use Wellesley as a resource to better your future.

quidditchcat: I don’t remember if it says this on the Common App, but it says on the Wellesley website to cap the supplement at 400 words.

Okay thanks!

And wow, between 2012 and 2013 what… Kind of scared now. Ah well.

Thebeatlestoday: But then… aside from the usual things that it can offer to us… Argh, so frustrating. Now that you say it like that, I’m beginning to feel less sure of my supplement.

Quidditchcat: Yeah, it says in the side bar of the supplement portion that the max is 400 words in two well-developed paragraphs.

I wonder why they had such a low acceptance rate last year? I suppose they had a lot more applicants… but the total number dropped too. Oh dear.

Walahoo- yes, the deadline’s moved to November 6th. Their website says that although the common app still displays the deadline as the first, they will accept ED applications up until the 6th.

tenth2014: where did you find that 2013 ED admission percentage? 2013 was a tough year, 28% admittance overall.

http://www.wellesley.edu/sites/default/files/assets/departments/admission/pdf/admissionreport2013.pdf

tenth2014: Thanks, I’ve been looking for this 2013 admissions report.

hey can you guys chance me?
i’m applying as ED

from a competitive public high school in northern calif
ethnicity- asian

GPA: 3.8/4.5 (top 10%)
SAT: 2020 (650 reading 690 math 680 writing)
SAT2: 800 Korean, 740 Math 2c, 680 Chem
AP: 5 Calc AB, 4 APUSH, 4 Euro, 3 Chem

first quarter grades
ap language- A
ap bio- B
ap calc bc- B
ap physics- A
ap government- A
ap economics- A

I feel very confident about my essays and recommendations, but my test scores are pretty weak. My extra-curricular activities are about average-good. Just based on my stats, do I stand a chance at Wellesley?

layla22: Honestly, it’s super hard to tell. Clearly your grades place you within the realm of possibility, but your SAT score is only average or below for Wellesley, and we don’t know anything about your ECs.
Hopefully you wrote an awesome essay and supplement, and your teacher recs are stellar.

Good luck! :)

Thebeatlestoday, are you applying ED or EE?

For people applying early, what are your majors?

tenth2014, I’m applying as a math major!

Any international students out there? Do you see your TOEFL score status on the MyWellesley portal? My portal says Standardized score: Complete, but I don’t see my TOEFL score there…

softcalculator: I’m applying EE (since I’m applying SCEA to Harvard, and unfortunately I can’t apply early to both blargh)

softcalculator- I’m in Canada, which counts as international, but I’m not taking the TOEFL… I think they only require it for students who have not spent a certain amount of years in an English speaking country?

tenth2014- I’m applying as neuroscience major :)

Oh, could you guys- I mean girls- chance me too? It’s a bit late for me to make any decisions for ED, but I’d just like to prepare myself emotionally if I don’t have a high chance of getting in…

SAT: 2050 (Reading-690, Math- 700, Writing-660)
SAT Subject: just took it last Saturday

Extracurriculars:
Long time executive member of a speech/debate club
Working at a tutoring centre and also taught English in China
Went on an outreach trip to South Africa for around 3 weeks
Volunteered as camp counselor at a summer camp
Member of school’s chamber choir
Was in orchestra for school’s musical production
Top 25% in CMC (Pascal, Cayley, Fermat), got some sort of certificate from AMC 12

Academic Awards:
Headmaster’s List for both grade 9 and 10 (average above 90% with no subject lower than 80%)
IB Psychology HL 11 award

I’m currently taking the IB diploma program and my teachers have predicted me:
English HL-7
Biology HL-7
Chemistry SL-7
Psychology HL-7
French SL (language B)-6 (or 7?)
Math HL-5
My school doesn’t offer a GPA, so I’m not very familiar with how that system works.

Status: Chinese-Canadian,
Intended field: Life Sciences (Neuroscience major?), Planning on med school
Essay: I’ve had a few people (teachers, friends, strangers) read my commonapp essay and have received some mixed reactions. Most of them say that it’s pretty good, but I still have a few things to tweak.
For the supplement, I’m quite confident with what I have, but I’ll still be making last minute reviews before the deadline.

I think 2050+ SATs with a good GPA (mostlyA’s/occasionalB’s and taking challenging courses offered at their schools) with decent extra curriculars all have a “shot” at Wellesley…

It’ll come down to essays and recommendations probably. I heard Wellesley has a super hollistic admission process.

I’m super nervous too. Wellesley is my dream school and I don’t have a plan B.

tenth2014- thanks
There are a few other liberal arts colleges around Boston/MA. Mount Holyoke and Smith are in MA along with the top two of the liberal arts colleges (Williams College and Amherst). Here’s a link of the list from wikipedia in case you need it

[List of liberal arts colleges in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](List of liberal arts colleges in the United States - Wikipedia)

Wellsesley’s ranked 7th in the US, but I just really like their environment… so… fingers crossed for both of us!

cantabile7: Those IB predicted score are very good. Have you considered taking the ACT? Supposedly girls test higher on the ACT vs the SAT. Since the ACT is content based and since your predicted IB scores are high, you might test higher on the ACT. The SAT is more of an appitude or IQ test.

cantabile7 et al: Are you familiar with the website, college *******? They have a chance me site where you can add your stats - GPA, SAT, awards, curriculars, etc - and other members will chance you. Also, if you list your schools, the website ranks your percentile based on your stats and the stats of other members who were considering, accepted, waitlisted, or denied. It will give you a general idea of where you stand in the applicant pool. If you are above 75 percentile of the applicant pool, your chances are very good. If you are below 25 percentile of the pool, you should still apply but realistically it’s a reach school.
