Official Class of 2020 Northeastern University Regular Decision Discussion

accepted, but no FA info! Anyone else have that prob?

Accepted into NEU IN Program. Will not be attending. (ACT 31 / GPA 3.9 / Very Involved)

What a departure for Northeastern admissions; recent years were not as standardized test score and GPA driven.

@Syke2020 Did you show interest in the school? Visits, emails, etc.? Seems like NEU is trying to reduce the number of kids who use them as a safety, then dont attend.

S accepted. Presidential scholarship of $18k; no other aid. Not sure it will be affordable.
SAT 2150
ACT 35 (Superscore 36)
Mostly academic ECs
3.68 GPA but low rank barely in top 25%

Very proud, but worried about the money.
Wait listed at Wash U; waiting to hear from 9 other schools.

Accepted!! So excited!!

Accepted to NU in program!
3.66 UW 5.8 W
2110 SAT

Probably won’t attend since it’s so expensive but still super excited!

I think demonstrated interest is an important factor. My S got waitlisted to Case Western which has higher acceptance rates but other than a campus visit, he showed no interest. When he was deferred EA to NU, he made sure that he followed up with a letter and email to the admissions counselor highlighting his strengths and the strong fit between him and NU and expressed that it was his first choice.

I personally think that demonstrated interest plays a factor, but who really knows. I got in with just average scores (2080 SAT, 3.72 UW, 4.1 W), yet displayed a great deal of interest by visiting and keeping in contact with my regional admission counselor after deferral. There are people with higher stats (not necessarily overqualified) than I, who are getting rejected, which really doesn’t make sense.

I visited over the summer, and after I got deferred I uploaded my resume. Really didn’t do much else, though.

Accepted into N.U.in
31 ACT

Got into biology. Will not be attending, because I can’t even if I wanted to lol not enough aid. Got close to full ride elsewhere, but still waiting for 8 more colleges…

Had to wait all day and evening as we’re in Los Angeles and my D was in a meeting from 5pm on! She was accepted with $20,000 merit $$! She had a 3.69 GPA, 2310 SAT, 750 Math SAT2, 750 US History SAT2 & 780 Lit SAT2. Class rank 30/600 (top 5%)

Her BF had a 3.1 GPA, 32 ACT & top 15% of class.

Their high school is grueling and has what might be considered grade deflation which is why her test scores are so much better than her GPA. Their core curriculum includes all AP courses. She will have 14 APs when she graduates. I thought she would do better with colleges as far as scholarships etc, but the GPA seems to eliminate her from the competative ones.

Now I am trying to understand what is up with NU’s need based aid. Freshman year is more restrictive?

Denied international student; but I got into MIT… So it is a little bit weird haha.

@migagura, WOW! Congrats on MIT! I cannot make any sense out of NU acceptances

@migagura, Congrats on MIT! I can’t make any Sense out of NU acceptances vs denials. My guess is they figured you would go to MIT!

Thanks! Well, Northeastern was kind of my safety school so yeah, I guess they just want to protect their yield.

Got NUin, how is this even chosen?

GPA 3.8 ACT 29 out state student got accepted into NUin for Internatipnal Affairs. I think this is a great opportunity, especially with my major! I emailed the school once and scheduled a visit.

Hi! I got accepted. Can anyone tell me when will we receive our financial aid offers? I applied for financial aid. (International student)

Status: Accepted w/$60k deans scholarship spread out over 4 years
SAT: 2200
ACT: 32
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted 10-12 GPA: 4.7

Lots of extracurriculars, 900 hours of community service, started nonprofit, etc. I also wrote a book and conducted a research project regrading the profit motive in education. (The last 2 were not on my Common App when I applied to NE though. I forgot to add them, and I think I added them only AFTER my application was sent in. Not positive though.)

Essays about my experience w/adventure sports (bungee jumping, white water rafting, canyoneering)
Lovely letters of recs. My teachers are truly great.

Oh man. I’m reading through these stats and I’m fairly shocked. I applied to NE on a whim as a safety without knowing much about school. I’ve never really posted on CC before, but I noticed that a lot of students w/stats incredibly similar to mine were straight up rejected? This is fairly surprising because I (for some reason) considered NE to be a great school but a safer option than most.

I’m pretty scared now for most of my other admission decisions to come back. If phenomenal kids like y’all are being rejected from NE, then the chances for me at some of my reaches (Rice University, Tufts, etc) are looking bleak at best.
