@nyr823 You’re GPA is on the low side, but your class rigor, ACT score and ECs/Leadership might make up for it. High school rank doesn’t matter.
@nyr823 Based on what happened to me, I don’t think you will get in. I had a 33 ACT, a 3.72 UW GPA, and I was in-state. Plus, every class I take is an IB class. My HC rejection proves that strong test scores and course rigor do not make up for a low GPA (And your ACT and GPA are even lower than mine). Maybe if your ECs are out of this world, you could get in. Also though, they might accept us after we write the follow up essays after initial rejection so I’m not saying you would never get in. It just doesn’t seem likely in the initial invitation stage.
does Michigan state require you to send mid year grades?
I applied to MSU on December 26th. How long will I have to wait? I know it says 8-12 weeks–is that true for rolling admission? Thanks and Go Green!
Son applied today and we are wondering if he will still be considered for any scholarships/merit aid? Since it is well after the November 1st date, does anyone know if there are still scholarship letters or offers?
@Irishcali I highly doubt it.
Got accepted today–James Madison College!! OOS 3.8 GPA, 29 ACT, asb/student council social chair, peer mentor, athletic council co-chair, hospital volunteer, sleepaway camp counselor, great recommendations…anyone know when we hear about honors college/scholarships?
@cmyers2017 Congrats! My S17 is accepted James Madison, too. He was accepted mid-Nov. And received scholarship notification early Dec. He’s also OOS.
How long after being accepted did you guys get the letter with how much it will cost you to attend?
For any people that this might help…I got into Michigan State on November 1st and met all the criteria for an Honors College invitation within 4-8 weeks of admittance. So I took matters into my own hands and emailed every person in admissions I could find at the Honors College. Got a response back saying my academic criteria wasn’t good enough. I was shocked to be honest. I’ve taken every AP except one that my school offers, and my school is constantly getting state and national recognition, and it just became and IB school. So I went and talked to my counselor and she said she would call the Honors College and get to the bottom of things. Just got a call from her saying that they accepted me after the conversation they had with her where she explained just how good my “academic course criteria” or whatever the the guy said in the email was. The fight it is not over once you submit you application people. You can dig more, and almost be annoying if you have to.
Thanks for the reply. Oh well, I guess we’ll see. If no help though, he won’t be going there. It’s just too expensive for OOS.
Accepted 12/19/16. 3.8 W 1130 new SAT. A LOT of extracurriculars and leadership! This is what most likely got me accepted. :-* #GoGreenGoWhite
@Irishcali Why apply past the scholarship deadline if you need a scholarship?
Starting to get very worried about where I stand… I started my steps of applying to Michigan State back in September and via the “Be a Spartan” portal they said to have received all of my materials by October 3rd, 2016. This is the transcript, the application itself, and SAT scores directly from the testing agency. My portal had been updated from nothing to text that says something along the lines of “Thank you for your continued patience, an initial review of your application says you are a competitive applicant to MSU . Due to an increase in the quantity and quality of freshman applications the Office of Admissions requires additional time to thoroughly review all applicants before making a final decision.” around the beginning of December. But it also says the decision should be released by 12 weeks after they receive all materials. Well, it’s been 13 weeks and tomorrow it will be 14. I’m very stressed and concerned as to why I have heard nothing back thus far, I thought I was well qualified. What might this mean for me?
GPA: 3.63 unweighted, 3.73 weighted
SAT score: 1150 (new sat)
AP courses, leadership roles, volunteer work… great essay responses.

@jasminecat I PM’d you
Son actually wasn’t going to apply to MSU since we are out of state etc., but then had second thoughts and remembered how much he liked it on tour etc. We are taking a chance and will see what happens. It’s understandable if there isn’t scholarship opportunity after the Nov. 1st date, but we took a chance. In the end, he will likely attend another school that has given him some great scholarships, but who knows!
Applied in mid Dec. SAT 1350, GPA 3.5, TOEFL 106. International freshman for mechanical engg. Got admitted. Recieved scholarship notification the next day.
@MiranAnwa-Congrats on your acceptance! So, to be clear, you DID get some scholarship award, even though you applied AFTER the November 1st priority date? That’s great!
Do you know if we get a grant if we could still get a scholarship?
@Irishcali Thank you! Yes I did get some. But it makes a lot of difference if you apply after the november 1st deadline as my friend had applied before that and he got multiple scholarships amounting to USD 44,000 (He had the exact same SAT score and GPA as me and a somewhat similar extracurricular). So yeah one can apply after the priority deadline but don’t expect a lot of aid or scholarship.
