General Comments: I’m still amazed/confused/happy to the max that I got in. I saw some really strong applicants on cc, so I guess Columbia Adcom is pretty fickle. Best of luck to everyone! Congrats to those accepted, I look forward to seeing you around next year! :)

Decision: Accepted (Columbia College)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2400 (one sitting)
[] SAT IIs: Math II: 800, Chem: 800, Bio: 800, US History: 780 (all one sitting)
[] GPA: 4.1/4.3 unweighted
[] Rank: School doesn’t rank
[] Other stats: This is super secret, bro… Okay, psych, I just don’t have anything else.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought my common app was really revealing of myself. For future generations, remember to let your personality shine here! I talked about my unique family situation and related it to my love for math and science. My supplements were okay… talked more about my science extracurriculars. My Why Columbia was average I thought. I wrote about how I make YouTube videos in the extracurricular short answer, and I thought that really revealed my personality well.
[] ECs: Lots of science/math stuff. Went to Ross Summer Program. I do Odyssey of the Mind. Involved in band. Blah blah blah. Activities were parallel to my interests.
[] Teacher Recs: One of my teacher recs from french teacher was pretty good (she showed it to me). My other one was from my chemistry teacher, and she told me it was amazing and I was the best student she ever had, but I didn’t see it.
[] Counselor Rec: She told me it was amazing and I guess it should have been pretty personal, since I talked to her about myself with her frequently.
[] Hook (if any): I’m a handsome Asian male.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New Jersey
[] School Type: Large public high school; pretty competitive.
[] Ethnicity: Chinese!!!
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Other Factors: I really think my personality shone through.
General Comments: I suggest everyone to really explain their unique situation to Columbia when applying. Columbia University is looking for an interesting new class, so let them know why you are special. I talked about my personality and how I’m not the average Lee Wang Hang who studies every night. The essays are super important!!!
Congrats to everyone else who got accepted! PM me and we can celebrate together!
And to those who weren’t so fortunate, remember that it’s not the end of the world. Something better will always work out for you.

Also, I know a lot of people from my school are going to stalk me and ■■■■■ this post… Please do not .__.

WTH. most of these acceptances are b-s.

I wasn’t able to get in, but congratulations to you all! It’s clear from these stats that you all deserved to get in, so I’m happy for all of you. It’s a silly thing to say, but enjoy Columbia and New York City, especially next year around this time. It was my dream to walk around Times Square with all of the blinking lights, or stand under the bridge at Central Park or Columbia’s walkway at night with all the snow, so although I won’t be able to live my dream now, you all will, and I am so, so happy for all of you. :)

But weird question, would any of you who were accepted be able to send me your Columbia short answers? My application was strong, but I’m pretty sure most of my short answers killed me; only one short answer could have been considered to be amazing. However, I have a few other applications to do for RD, but I’d like to see exactly what I did wrong in my short answers, and I’d like to see a few examples of what constitutes a great short answer. Message me if you’re willing.

And no, I won’t plagiarize or steal ideas since I have all my ideas down already, and I just need to see the structure of the short answers.

However, if you all are uncomfortable with sharing your short answers since they might be too personal, I understand. :)

Thank you, and best wishes to all of you! :D

Update: Dang. I reread my post, and boy do I sound like a suck-up in the first half. But know that my words are genuine, and I really wish you all the best of luck.

I’m not trying to be mean but kristinababyxoxo you have to a ■■■■■ you don’t have good stats or extracurriculars unless you’re the daughter of a billionaire you bought everyone on the ad comm a yacht or have the single most inspirational life story I’ve ever heard, I have no idea how you were accepted.

@collegekid0094 - I totally agree. Going over this with my friend who got deferred and we’re very confused…

@neon321 A lot of very strong applicants got deferred. Don’t know why. I think Columbia has a really different strategy/policy when selecting ED applicants. The real competition may be in the RD round…

@jp4ever I really hope your right.

I have finally calmed down enough to move my stats, so here they are.

[/ul]Other Factors:

General Comments:
I feel like I messed up my Why Columbia essay by not writing about the core. Maybe that would have been the difference?

@Yin4TheWin Competition among Asian/Asian American applicants is HUGE!!! At least for this year’s ED. I don’t think not writing about the core hurt your chance. Maybe because you have too many academic ECs?

Decision: Accepted!!!

Subjective:
Essays: They were okay… My CA one was about my nomadic life and what I learned from one of the environments I lived in. A lot of my other essays (supplements/activity essay) were related to languages. My activity one was about translation work, the one about favorite class was about Chinese, the one about my preferred major was about comparative literature. The one about cultural event was about an ink-and-wash exhibition. My why Columbia essay was pretty conventional- (diversity, Core, NY)

ECs :
(this part of my app is pretty mehh, leadership role is close to non-existent)
-Wrote Korean folklore stories in French and shared them with French kids at European school.
-School literature magazine: wrote poetry (10-11), helped create a new section for foreign languages
-Paid intern at media company during the summer
-Translation work at radio broadcasting station
-Staff writer for school newspaper (11-12), school magazine (12)

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NJ
[] School Type: Large, public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments: I should not have applied for SEAS…my math and science grades suck (always been B/B+s while I got As in my other classes). My SAT II scores were low as well, especially physics, since I talked about it in my “favorite class” short answer. My interview went alright, I guess, but my interviewer was more intrigued with my creative writing experiences than any engineering stuff. So yeah, really should have applied for the College. And finally, my ACT score probably wasn’t factored into the decision since it came out pretty late (I took it on standby). It arrived on Nov 30, and I sent an email to my admissions rep about it, but he didn’t reply (he usually replied to my emails within a day).

Decision: DEFERRED to CC

good luck to everyone else who is deferred and going for RD

**Decision: Rejected **

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2130 (700 M, 710 CR, 720 W)
[] SAT IIs: 770 US History, 750 French, 720 Math I
[] GPA: 4.0 W, (school only reports weighted)
[] Rank: School doesn’t rank
[] Other stats and awards: AP Scholar with Distinction, High Honor Roll 9-12, won international science competition, won French poetry award, won lots of essay contests
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My common app essay was really unique, well-written, and mature. My guidance counselor kept raving about it.
[] ECs: I had a lot of leadership positions. Founder of school’s science club, model UN captain 10th grade-present, founder of school’s French Club, founder of school’s sports fundraising association, science olympiad, varsity volleyball 9th-present, I tutor an underprivileged youth in math/science/english every week for free…and some random things I can’t think of right now.
[] Teacher Recs: I have really close relationships with both of those teachers. They both worked with me outside of the classroom.
[] Counselor Rec: I go to a small school, so my guidance counselor and I have a pretty close relationship too. I always go to her when I am having a problem @ school. She really encouraged me to apply to Columbia, thinking at the least I would be deferred…I know she wrote me an outstanding recc. (I thought it was a crapshoot all along…)
[] Hook (if any): nothing…lol
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NY
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: F
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments: Well I thought I would be a lot more devastated than I am. I thought I would cry, but I guess because I was expecting a rejection, I wasn’t so surprised… then again, all my friends/teachers got my hopes up by telling me I was GOING to get in…Columbia was a dream.
To the accepted: Congratulations. Columbia is really a special place.
To the rejected: Take this rejection with a grain of salt. It doesn’t mean that you are not worthy of going to or won’t succeed at Columbia…Stay strong! and know that in the next months, you will be getting amazing offers from other schools.

Subjective:

Essays: Common app essay was amazing. I wrote about the ways in which my religion, Islam, has provided me with a solid foundation but has allowed me to develop as my own person, especially growing up in a society that is not so tolerant of Muslims.
ECs: National Honor Society Treasurer (2 years), Model Congress Finance Chair (4 years), World Language Honor Society (2 years), Math Tutor (2 years), Volunteer at South Nassau Communities Hospital as a messenger (2 years), Varsity Badminton Captain (4 years), Key Club (4 years), Summer Camp Counselor (1 year), Old Bethpage Village Restoration Volunteer (1 year)
Teacher Recs: Two were from teachers who knew me really well and who I believe wrote excellent recs. One was from my Physics teacher who writes very generic letters… but I didn’t find about this until after I had submitted my recs…
Counselor Rec: Amazing- my counselor absolutely loved me because I moved to New York from California the summer before my freshman year and took the most challenging classes I could possibly take at my high school. Regardless, none of it was enough…
Hook (if any): None :frowning:

Location/Person:

State or Country: Suburban town in New York (might be why)
School Type: Public

Other Factors: Was born in Bangladesh and moved to America when I was 5 years old.
General Comments: Columbia was my first choice school. I guess I shouldn’t have been optimistic about getting in but I couldn’t help it. Oh well, life goes on. I’ll get in somewhere better :P
