[/ul]**General Comments:**I am soooo suprised I wasn’t rejected, so I’m very happy with a deferral. It just goes to show that crappy scores and not great ECs like mine don’t mean an automatic rejection! Congrats to those who were accepted, and much love to those rejected. Remember, a college doesn’t make or break your life. Other deferrals, good luck in the RD round!

WHY YOU THINK YOU WERE REJECTED:

I want to share this story with next years applicants. I have tried very hard to get into Columbia all of high school. I visited so many times, did an overnight, my essays (especially the why columbia) were so passionate, but I did not get in. Personally, although my scores werent the highest, I feel that this decision was partly affected because the only other person who applied ED in my school was ranked 6th and had slightly better scores and GPA. She also is the most widely know cheater in our grade and in our school. Like, serious stuff. Regrettably no teacher has ever been able to report anything more than a suspicion and no kids ever actually reported her. Life sucks sometimes, but you know what? This is Columbia’s mistake.

[/ul]General Comments:
Am in utter shock. I honestly can’t believe it. I was 100% expecting rejection… my supplements were rushed, I did them in a single night. My stats were truly my only strengths…

ANYWAY SO HAPPY! PM me if you also got accepted if you’d like to talk! (:

The racial disparities in these admissions results are surprisingly stark, in both these and the Dartmouth threads.

[] Job/Work Experience: Physics internship at Portland State University
[] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of NHS-related stuff, run a free tutoring program at my school
[] Summer Activities: Physics internship, enrolled full time at a community college on a whim, music camps
[] Essays: Thought they were good enough. My main essay was a little weird – it was about how I started sleeping less than two hours a night – but my English teacher recommended I go crazy with it because it doesn’t ultimately play that big a role. Maybe he was wrong
[] Teacher Recommendation: Not sure. One of them had to be good, other one was a total wildcard
[] Counselor Rec: Not sure
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A
[] Also submitted a science supplement (research abstract from my internship)

[/ul]Other[ul]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Numbers, essays (or so I thought)
[] Weaknesses: Not many extracurriculars
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not really sure. If I had to guess, I didn’t show a strong enough focus in any one area. I would love recommendations (posted in the other board) or critiques to help me when writing my other apps to competitive schools[/li][li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No other EDs. Maybe I’ll do Barnard
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Just wanted to post my stats to let others rejected know it’s not about the numbers. Columbia was my dream school but for some reason I’m not that torn up, so that’s great

What do you mean by this? elaborate

Teacher Recommendation: Should have been amazing! One from my APUSH/AP Gov teacher and one from my AP Human teacher. They both told me they wrote great recs!
Counselor Rec: probably good, but somewhat generic.
Additional Rec: from the volunteer coordinator at the library…hopefully it got there because she mailed it in haha.

Other
State (if domestic applicant): TN
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: very competitive public
Ethnicity: hispanic/french
Gender: F
Income Bracket: Middle Class leggo.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM
Reflection
Strengths: essays, ecs (I think), recs, interview
Weaknesses: scores are low compared to other applicants.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: They saw enough in me to like me, but not enough to love me. Happy I wasn’t rejected! Although I’m not looking forward to waiting…oh well. It’s all good.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Fordham with a full tuition scholarship!
General Comments: It feels kind of weird to be deferred, but I am so happy that I wasn’t flat out rejected. To all accepted: my sincere congratulations. You all have worked so hard to get here and totally deserve it! To all rejected: COLUMBIA DOESN’T DESERVE YOU. Keep your head high and work hard on those RD apps! To my fellow deferred peeps: We have bright futures ahead of us, whether Columbia is a part of it or not. I’m looking foward to chilling with you all the next few months as we wait for March to come.

Decision: Accepted - CC

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2320 (M: 770, CR: 770, W: 780)

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School Doesn’t Compute
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Doesn’t rank

[] Senior Year Course Load: Mathematics HL, Economics HL, History of the Americas HL, English A1 HL, French B SL, Physics SL
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model UN Club (Student in-charge and President of school MUN - member of 12 conferences in total), Student Council (3 years - House Captain and Faculty appointed representative), Theater/Drama (started last year, but significant involvement in school productions), Editorial Board (Editor-in chief for one year), a small list but I spent a large amount of time on each and showed commitment
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: Teaching the children of a local village English, Mathematics, and Science
[] Summer Activities: Model UN
[] Essays: To be honest, I really had jitters about them. Sometimes I would think they were great, other times I would find the unintelligible. Trust what you write, as hard as that might be. Don’t worry if you spend a lot of time writing, or if yoou don’t produce a large amount in terms of volume (in one sitting). Even still, the time make good thoughts accumulate in your head.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I think they were really good! I chose my two favorite teachers
[] Counselor Rec: I think it was pretty good!
[] Additional Rec: No
[] Interview: No

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): FL
[] Country (if international applicant): India (US Permanent Resident)
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Indian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: <$20000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My achievements have been made in the context of a father who suffers from mental illness, who would for years prevent me for leaving home for anything but the trip to school. I implicitly mentioned this in my personal statement, and asked my teachers and counselor to substantiate. I also receive a 75% scholarship to my IB school, and am the only student to receive this (among a student body of about 700)
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, Academic Record, ECs (maybe?), Essays (didn’t realize this till the decision), Achievements made under very adverse circumstances
[] Weaknesses: Volunteer Experience, ECs (maybe?)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays showed a strong strand of positivity and idealism, which I think is a fundamental part of who I am. I think my circumstances and achievements showed my ability to persist for what I believe in, a quality I think the adcoms appreciate.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

[/ul]General Comments:

I am shocked, elated, baffled, content, and happy at the same time! Columbia Class of 2017!!! Roar Lions!!! To all those who worry - be it about the strange transcripts their school issue, the hotchpotch of their academic records, whether their extra-curricular activities are suitable, and (the ephemeral question) whether their essays are good - I say, DON’T. Have faith in yourself, and in God. When you want something with all your heart, things work out in one way or the other.

And one last thing, I need to thank the community here at CC. The “chances,” and “results,” pages are often criticized, but they’ve taught me so much over the last one and a half years. I wouldn’t know things as simple as the Noncustodial Waiver form, or as major as the workings of Early Decision, without it. Thank you!

[] Weaknesses: GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: relatively poor academic record
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: first decision thus far!

[/ul]General Comments: Here’s some advice to all of you Ivy dreamers out there: work hard. No aspect of one’s application can compensate for a sub-par academic record. I was hoping that with decent scores, nice recs, and being an ED URM applicant, I could somehow have a shot. NO. WRONG.

You’re not inherently special. Get over yourself. You have to buckle down and put in the hours to achieve A’s. Turn of the computer, quit reading these forums, quit dreaming, and do something. For all you Freshman and Sophomores reading this: ANYONE CAN MAKE IT INTO AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL IF YOU PUT IN THE TIME.

Finally, always remember that where you go to college isn’t everything. In fact, it means very little of anything in the larger scheme of things. So good luck and happy studying.

[] Strengths: SAT I is solid, that one rec was great, and my interview was awesome
[] Weaknesses: Physics SAT II didn’t go so well, plus I got a B in Honors Physics last year, which isn’t so good when you’re applying into engineering. I hate when people blame their grades on their teachers, but my physics teacher last year basically stopped teaching us 2nd semester

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don’t know yet; will find out about MIT soon

[/ul]General Comments:
I’m actually pretty happy. I probably won’t get in RD, but only like 20% of people get deferred, so at least they saw something I guess
