Official Columbia University RD Class of 2017 Thread!

I wrote about Larry Kramer’s controverisal novel called “Faggots” and how it opened my eyes when it came to my gay activism. Haha.

I <3 Pink Floyd @mstustingore.

Haha that Emperor’s New Groove essay must be hilarious <3

You guys are all so cool. And I mean that honestly! I’d be honored to go to Columbia with any one of you.

My answer was on Al Franken’s books and how they taught me to seek out good journalism. I might have been a wee bit too snarky, but we’ll see how it shakes out.

I had to lol just a little bit reading where you all applied. God, we’re all overachievers… it’s a bit ridiculous. CC is the only place where I’m not (too) embarrassed to admit that I applied to 18 schools - every Ivy except Cornell (added Yale and Penn at the last minute), UChicago, a couple matches, and three or four safeties. It got to a certain point where every new supplement was something I’d already written, and I promised my parents that one day, I’ll pay them back the $1000+ I spent in application fees. shrug So it goes. I can’t wait until March!

@stupiddorkyidiot all franken is cool. oh i only applied to 10 schools haha. 18 is a lot. good luck :)

I applied to 8 schools and I feel very inferior on CC. Most of my friends don’t bother to apply to anywhere other than local colleges and they think that’s a lot.

I applied to 7 Ivy’s as my reaches (No Cornell), 1 target (UVA- I’m in-state, legacy, and my stats are above 75th percentile so it’s pretty likely there), and 2 safeties

So many people wrote such cool stuff. I wrote mine on growing up with npr, maybe a bit dull, but also has a lot of meaning for me. I applied to 4 Ivies and CC sure can make me feel inferior, but I am really hoping to get into Columbia.

I feel super intimidated at CC and being international with almost no info for American universities makes me feel less qualified, but I applied to 3 Ivies, 2 Reach schools, and my safeties are in my home country.

Guys it stresses me out thinking that literally in 3 months we will most likely know where we will be for the next 4 years in our lives. But it’s also exciting haha. I can’t wait to know! (hopefully it’s columbia crossing my fingers)

@mmmgirl yeah i feel you. most of my friends are slackin off and only applying to safety schools. it’s weird because i’m applying to a bunch of competitive LACs and Ivies.

@raca111 yeah i can only see myself at columbia. o.o

@serenamae aww don’t feel discouraged. seriously as long as you wrote something that matters to YOU that’s all that matters :)

@serena - NPR is awesome! I almost wrote about a particular Science Friday show, but I changed my mind at the last minute. If it has meaning to you, that’s all that matters. It’ll show.

I just have a question for people who got deferred EA-ED from super selective schools, how do you guys feel about regular decision? I got deferred from Wharton and although it was devastating at first, I still saw it as a positive sign because being deferred from a major school could mean that you’ll get accepted to great schools. What do you think? Columbia is my first choice now that I’ve forced myself to forget about wharton lol

@wharton3 just gonna put it all out there, i got rejected from Barnard ED. it was incredibly devastating, and i didnt see it coming.
all the statistics say that im already a long shot for Columbia, and i know it. but why should that stop anyone? god knows Columbia has sent me enough tantalizing brochures to earn that $70 app fee, might as well give it to them. heck, id give anything to go to Columbia. getting a rejection from my formerly first-choice school gave me the initiative to refocus my app and increase my potential elsewhere.

@artobsessed yeah i’m applying rd to barnard but i didn’t ed/ea anywhere. aww… hopefully you’ll get in to your top choice  i’m so nervous for decisions.

@artobsessed - “god knows Columbia has sent me enough tantalizing brochures to earn that $70 app fee, might as well give it to them. heck, id give anything to go to Columbia”

^ Haha!! I thought likewise!! :)

And I had applied to 6 universities (5 Ivies) & Northwestern - All Reaches & 1 safety - Drexel!! After coming to CC - I applied to UIUC & CWRU last minute!! LOL!!

But then I asked myself, do I “WANT” to go to UIUC,CWRU or Drexel - and I say no!! I just applied for the heck of it(And I want atleast 1 acceptance letter)!!

So it really doesn’t matter how many you applied to unless you really want to go to all of them!!
Btw,for those wondering, I am an international student - so if not my top 6, I’d rather do my UG at home!! :)

I know that I gave my all and did pretty well academically and EC-wise. If Columbia sees that I have ambition and offers me admission, I would be so honored :)

I am really curious to know the percentage of students that were deferred from Columbia… It’s bugging me that I can’t find out anywhere haha. If anyone knows, feel free to share:) haha

I was deferred from Yale SCEA and I actually took it as a positive sign. Yeah, I wasn’t accepted, but at least I was deemed a worthy applicant for one of the most selective schools in the world. At least that’s how I’m viewing it.

In love with Columbia, and NYC would be an added bonus!

Didn’t apply anywhere early, and I don’t really mind. I have one acceptance so far (my safety - they do rolling decisions), and I’m honestly kind of excited for the end of March. I like the suspense! Plus, admitted or denied, I know I’m going to be okay. :)

yeah i have one acceptance under the belt in NYC… and i recently got a letter saying i was 1/50 top applicants chosen to be flown up there and hang out on its campus? it made me feel a lot better about prospects, but im still all-out for CU. ALL OUT
