ACT: Did not take

SAT II: Don’t remember really… Spanish: 590(ouch…) Math II: in the 700s Bio: 660 I believe

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.6(Mostly due to some classes taken in middle school, my ninth grade grades, and my schools wacky grading, but there is a HUGE upward trend)

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):uhh top 11% class size is about 675

AP (place score in parenthesis): AP U.S. History (3) (I suck at history)

IB (place score in parenthesis):

Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc, AP Gov, AP Psych, AP Spanish, AP English Lit, Honors Physics, Chamber Orchestra

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Achievement finalist

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model UN(secretary) 2 years, Urban League 6 years, Superintendent student leadership committee 2 years, and some other stuff I can’t remember., city orchestras, teaching myself piano and guitar.

Job/Work Experience: Kumon Math and Reading Center since 9th grade.

Volunteer/Community service: Nothing huge but some service here and there.

Summer Activities: Camps (4-H, NASA, Work/Kumon)

Essays:Um, I thought it was ok, it was about this adventure I took around the city when I was like 7 with my brother, who was only ten, without the knowledge of our parents

Teacher Recommendation: Great I assume

Counselor Rec:That one is suspect, our counselors are very much known for having no little about us and not caring

Additional Rec:none

Interview: didn’t have one, but others at my school did…

Other

State (if domestic applicant):Virginia

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Large I think (the only public school in the city)

Ethnicity: African American

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: Not sure, but it’s low

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: My huge upward trend indicates my ability to learn and grow, URM, Rigor of courses

Weaknesses: GPA, SAT Scores

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess my essays and short answers were crap. I had a really hard time conveying how much I wanted to attend Columbia and how much I was ready for it, I really wish that I had an interview, 'where my curiosity and overall thirst for knowledge comes across, but that didn’t help for other schools.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: JMU, UVA, W&M, Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia (tear)

General Comments: I had realistic expectations but I guess I was unable to extinguish that last glimmer of hope since the rejected stung. Although, looking at some stats here, I think maybe I should have been waitlisted. Recently my school has gone through a lot of changes so that could have played a factor. This year, they added a slew (sp?) of AP course for sophmores and juniors so it may have appeared that I hadn’t taken as many as were available to me. Also, in my school all AP science classes are 2 periods (not sure if this is the same everywhere) which means I would have had to have dropped orchestra or spanish to take one. I guess this goes to show that dreams don’t always come true. Wow…I wrote more than I wanted to but…good luck to you all who got in, maybe I’ll see you in four years.

Hooks: Recommendations were flawless
Gender: M African American

My essay was extremely well written; the Interview was superb. My recommendations also did the job. I was very lucky to have opportunities to work with professors during a few of my summers after my Junior and Sophomore years. After I did this, I had them write me letters of recommendation instead of my teachers.

I guess the gpa and rank really killed me, which sucks because that’s mainly due to a couple of early semesters.
