Official Columbia University Transfer Thread Fall 2012

Why don’t you just take the SATs again? I read through your posts and you said your math score was the only one that was low. The math section just requires diligent practice. I’m not sure what Columbia’s policy on SAT retakes is, however.

They don’t care how many times you retake it. I don’t know, I guess I could…I feel like my problem with SAT math is more psychological, though. It’s not that the actual problems are hard, it’s just that I freeze up and can’t think…I just can’t do timed math tests.

I know what you’re talking about…I had the same problem with the CR. It was the only section I didn’t break 780 on. My best advice would be to just practice a lot. Do the problems again and again and again. Hopefully, that will help you gain confidence.

Have you tried looking through College Confidential’s threads regarding test prep? I’m sure that would be a great resource.

Well, I’m back on these forums after nearly two years since senior year of high school.

I agree with francis up there - NYU and NYU Poly campuses aren’t really intellectually stimulating, and while I’ve met decent professors here and there, they are, for the rest, pretty lousy.

I am, however, interested in engineering and not so much the Core.

What is the Core, exactly, and why is it so “popular”?

^It’s Columbia’s general education requirements, basically. They’re discussion-based and everyone has to take them.

I’m applying as well for this fall to be in the c/o 2015. What’s a good GPA to be safe around as a transfer? I’m currently at St. John’s University 6 year pharmacy program and it sucks. Not the academics, but everything else like social life, and the people, etc.

Also, my sister graduated from the school in 2009, so does legacy give the extra push?

@Hopes - I haven’t, I’ll give them a look. Honestly, the thought of taking the SAT again makes me want to stab my eyes out, Oedipus-style, but if that’s what it takes to have a shot at Columbia, maybe it’s worth it. Thanks for the advice.

@sAxsky - I’m pretty sure for a school like Columbia, there is no “safe” range. However, I think that basically what it boils down to is this: a 3.8 won’t keep you out, and obviously the higher the better. I’m interested in why you would want to transfer from such a specific program, though…does Columbia even have a pharmacy track? I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be obnoxious, I’m honestly just curious.

About legacy, I think it depends. I knew a girl who was absolutely not qualified to attend the school in any way (she took two APs in high school and got a 30 on the ACT), but she had her grandfather’s book from when he did the Core, so she was golden. As for having a sister who recently graduated…I’m not sure, but I can’t see it really making a difference, sorry.

I said it before, but I want to transfer out because I hate it here. I currently commute to school and I can’t do it for another 5 years. Sure I could dorm, but I can’t justify $15K a year when I live 25 minutes away. I hate being around my parents and I can’t do stuff I would’ve been able to do had I been far, far, away. I also realized that I’d rather study medicine than pharmacy. The accomplishment of becoming a doctor is what appeals to me.

I’m applying to 4 schools, UMich (top), Columbia, Cornell, and Duke. I don’t care where I get into, so I would transfer to either of them.

The reason Columbia is on the list is because I already have a lot of experience there because of my sister. I’ve been to Columbia on more weekends than I care to remember. I didn’t apply during my senior year because my high school grades blow. My high school grades still blow but hopefully my essay and college grades will mitigate that somewhat.

I hope you’re wrong about the legacy part though haha.

Well, your sister having gone there definitely won’t hurt you. I wasn’t trying to attack your reasons for wanting to transfer. It sounds like you have good ones. UMich is a good place, it seems like kind of the opposite of Columbia in a lot of respects, though (at least to me). But who knows, people get into Columbia and Brown, and their educational philosophy could not be more different.

Anybody here? I’m curious about what successful applicants have listed under the books and publications section in the past. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not planning to lie, but it would still be interesting to know.

Since this thread has been pretty inactive, I am not sure if I’ll get a response. Anyway, I am applying as a transfer student to Columbia College for this upcoming fall. I hear their acceptance rate is ridiculously low! Can someone please chance me?

High School GPA: We don’t have a 4.0 scale but it was a 97.8 weighted with all AP and honors courses.

SAT: 1400/ 2100

College: Currently attending Emory University
1st Semester GPA: 3.85. My schedule was as follows:
Chemistry 141: A-
Calculus II: A
Spanish 212: A
English 101: A-
This semester I am taking a required freshman seminar, Business Economics, Spanish 300, and Chemistry 142.

Thank you!

I do not know how to edit a previous post (yes, I know, it’s sad), but I wanted to add:

That I am transferring as an incoming sophomore

That I did apply early decision last year and was deferred, then rejected. I’m not sure if that helps in any way.

Hi Could someone tell me my chances?

Currently a sophomore in a 4 yr private university. I was a pharmd. D major my first three semesters but changed to biology because I really want to become a doctor (took a big chance there!).

High School-
96.63 gpa weighted/94.4 not weighted- upwards trend
Bad SAT scores- 650/670/650
I do not want to send my ACT scores
6 AP courses, 1 college course and the rest are honors
LOTS OF EC’s- president of clubs, 2 honor societies, basketball, volunteered, drama, etc…

University- St. John’s/ pharmd then biology
GPA- 3.8, downwards because I really wasn’t interested in the courses. One bad grade while others are A’s. The bad grade isnt a science or math course.
Part of many organizations, peer educator, volunteer at a hospital and animal shelter, research, etc…
deans list and other honors

I figured it’s about time to revive this thread…

@Collegekid793 and @mms0915 it’s difficult to gauge exact chances considering Columbia is extremely holistic in their evaluation process. Moreover, it is extremely competitive and what they look for year to year varies. You’re best bet would be to look at statistics of previously successful transfer students. Asking to be chanced by other CC members who are also applying never works out well. A definitive answer from a person doesn’t mean anything; other than provide a little comfort that someone believes in you. You guys applied already, which is great because you think you have a shot! Don’t care about what others have to say at this point.

another nervous applicant, what are you guys doing to pass time? also, when do you guys think we’ll hear back? Mid-May seems kinda vague

another CCer finally some life to this thread… I am obsessively checking CC. Hopefully we’ll hear by May 11th

surprised this thread isn’t more lively

Another Columbia College transfer applicant here. I’m a freshman at a Great Books school so I should be able to transition seamlessly to the core curriculum in Columbia. I just hope I get accepted. So excited about Columbia.

YAY! same here, some more excited applicants… very good stuff.

Anyone applying from a community college?
