Haha - achang - you don't just send common app corp. your app and have them distribute it. When I applied, I filled out the application online, 'previewed' it, and then printed it out. That way, all the spaces were filled for all for the 'basic' information.

Wow, this common app isn't easy.

How am I supposed to classify my community service? I have one main area of volunteer work, but in addition to that I have done an array of different things: serve food at the rescue mission, tutor children, work at the Shrine Circus, help w/ church events & other local events, etc. It doesn't really fit into one space, and it's not worthy enough to write a short essay on all those random things.

This may have been asked, but I haven't cruised the whole thread.

This isn't a question about the common application itself, but I have decided I'm using the school's application instead of the common application. Is it acceptable to use the common application's counselor evaluation and teacher recommendation forms if I am using the school's official application? I'd imagine not, but I don't want to make my teacher/counselor fill in six different forms.

Hey everyone. I'm new here. I'm having some problems with my application. I can't think of a name for this activity. Can someone help me?
OK, I have a bunch of papercrafts on my pc. They are for printing and making paper models of tanks, ships, airplanes.... I advertise them on the internet, go print them out and sell. Is this called work experience?
One more question: Do I fill the name of my employer in into "employer" box or the place where I work?
Thanks

I don't Know if this has been asked yet, but I don't have the time to view 15 pages for a quick question.

Under the family section, it asks for siblings that went to college. If my brother is currently attending college what do i put for the "Dates of Attendence"? I put The date he started, and the date he is suppose to graduate (couple years from now), is that correct?

azngamer54, that's what I would do.

If I teach little kids piano on weekends, could I put that as a job or EC? would that seem like something someone makes up when they don't have anything to put down??

it you get paid its a job, if not its an EC

Just wondering, how the the recommendations work with the common app? Do they write one and send it to the central common app location(if such exists)? Or do they write a lot and send it to each college I want to apply to individually?

What if I didn't do anything significant during the summer? I stayed with my grandparents and bummed around. Should I say that and try to beef it up? Or should I leave that section blank.

Also, what unique perspective could a white, not religious at all catholic girl bring to a school? I don't speak 8 languages. I haven't had an eye opening experience. Can I talk about how I can always bring down the stress level in a room? Should I talk about the wide variety of friends I have (of every race, religion, heritage, etc)? I'm not an extraordinary person in any sense, but I do think I deserve to go to a top notch college. What did all you non-extraordinary people write about?

I was wondering if this is a correct or acceptable thing to do. I like to doing scientific research and I have two projects: one that will be entered into ISEF and Siemens-Westinghouse Competition, and another one that will be entered in the Young Epidemiology Scholar competition. Can I list the projects in the "Position Held, Honors Won, or Letters Earned?" Or should I write about them separately somewhere else?

JohnN--I would probably put that in the additional info section or maybe mention it in the 150 essay section if you talk about scientific research

edit: well, now that I think about it, you could probably mention it in the position/honors/letters section b/c the mini blurb under the title says "Include specific events and/or major accomplishments..." :)

Ahh ok! I did not catch that mini-blurb part. Thank you!

Just a random question, does using the common app lessen your chances than using the college's actual applications?

jomama1018,
simple answer: no.
Common App is just an easier and more efficient way to weed through applications for the readers and an easier and more efficient way to send out applications for the students.

and I'm assuming that if the colleges want to know more they can either contact you or send a secondary application?

Where do awards that are non-academic go? like where do I put a leadership award??

A quick question about the Current Year Courses. It states: "Please indicate title, level (AP, IB, advanced, honors, etc.) and credit value of all courses you are taking this year." What does it mean by credit value?

john n... ask your guidance counsler how the many credits the school gives per course.. she'll know and be able to tell you

jomama1018,
I think the common app really covers everything needed for deciding your fate. If you can think of anything they may have overlooked, put it in your essay or additional information box. If any factual information is missing, they will probably contact the school to get official records.
