OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

For some odd reason, the CA is locked after you send it to your first college. This makes no sense at all. What if something changes? this is possible for people applying ea/ed, or rolling admissions.

This is the first year that this is the case, and I suspect it will be a problem. If people are inconvenienced by it, please send email to The Common Application and explain your concerns.

I'm not sure that's true. I was just talking to a friend who goes to BU, and he said he sent a sentimental grandmother essay to BU, and a funny essay to Tufts.

Burski: you might want to reread what I wrote, esp w/r/t to the sentance that starts "This is the first year that this is the case..."

This is a new policy for CA, and it stated in their instructions. It has also been discussed quite a bit in this the forums.

I suspect a lot of kids are going to have multiple CA accounts.

Whoa wait up... isn't is just the essay that'd be locked?? Or all parts of the application?

Question: I know that college's don't look favorably at laundry lists of EC's, so would it be a good idea to just include 5-6?

Question: Where does National Honor Society belong? I'm VP. Is it an Academic Honor? EC?

Yes. Include the 5 or 6 you've been doing the longest and hold the highest positions in.

I put it under EC when I applied. It's not really an award... I don't think it really matters where it goes. They'll see it either way. Everyone and their mother has it anyway.

From the instruction page of the common app:

Once you have submitted your Common App to any institution, your application will be locked and you will not be able to make any changes to it.

Hmm I always thought that refered to the application you sent to that particular institution, not the overall application. Can someone please confirm? And also, would they find out if you had multiple CA accounts?

I'm a strong student applying to top schools (Not Ivy, just under, I.E. WashU) but I have not won any academic honors per se (other than like, principals list). Will it hurt me on the common app that I don't have so much there? I have excellent ECs.

It's no big deal that you don't have that many academic honors.
Just make sure that your passion for a particular EC is reflected in one of your essays and maybe in a teacher rec.

Sorry if these have been asked already..

For organizations like Academic Decathlon in which you compete on a county or state level, where do you put the awards you won?
1. in the extracurricular section under "positions, honors..."?
or 2. in the other awards section?
--if I won 6 medals, should I just write that and maybe highlight the more prestigious medals or do I list out what each medal was for?

And - if I was elected to a club officer position in January of my sophomore year (the position supposedly to be held during junior year), but I took over all responsibilties of the position as soon as I was elected, does it count towards sophomore year too? (sorry that was worded really badly)

Also, does it mean anything to put that you were on the high honor (principal's) roll? Or can they just infer that from your GPA?

should I put AP exam scores in the academic honors box?

mtngoat1, some of the schools' supplements have spaces for AP scores, so just check that first.

and if they don't?

I'd probably put it in the Additional Info section... but I'm not sure. Anyone else know a better place for them?

If I won 165 medals, should I list what they are each from, individually?

im not going to. jk

yes I have...it's weird I know. so do I put this on the courses section?

Yes.

You're going to annoy the person if you put down all 165 individually. Try to group them together as much as you can. So like, if they're from the same competition but different years, go:

First Place: Oompa-Loompa Competitions (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007)

Doesn't have to be exactly like that, but something that the adcom can quickly understand.

Or maybe...

Oompa-Loompa Competitions
Top Oompa (2004, 2005, 2006)
Best Oompa Voice (2005, 2006)

Timbuktu Policy Debate Invitational
First Speaker (2004, 2005, 2007)

and so on.

Once you have submitted your Common App to any institution, your application will be locked and you will not be able to make any changes to it.

This makes no sense to me whatsoever. I'm applying EA to a college, but what if something changes by the time I apply to my other colleges? It's definitely an inconvenience and it seems a little unfair.
