OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

Hopefully, this has not been answered already. I got a 2160 on the SAT and 34 on the ACT. Now, I am applying to Penn. I am going to send the ACT, but what do I fill in the commonapp for the SAT? I am applying to other schools, which must have SAT II tests regardless of SAT I or ACT. Should I leave the section blank and simply send my scores (SAT or ACT) to colleges as I desire?

Nobody has answered this yet: can we upload different additional information for each school? Or is the document going to be locked like the essay?

Someone has answered this already. The answer is no.

burn leave it blank, that's what the stanford adimssions lady said, she said at least stanford's not going to think that your hiding anything from them, i'm in same position, they'll see the sat's thru the sat ii's anyway and they're not gonna care that you don't list them good luck

Hey, just wondering. What's the procedure if I apply online using the Common App and wanna attach a resume of EC's?

tetrisfan, you can upload it for the additional information.

Q: For other secondary school, do I put down a school if I attended a program that was held there but didn't really have much to do with the school, so it was just a venue?

OK, in Safari, the drop down menus don't work online. Is that just me, or is this a browser compatibility issue?

Also, is there any way to submit creative writing under the arts thing? Does that count as an art?

And does anyone else hate doing it online as much as me. Ugh it is incredibly unpleasant. . . but it's saving me money I guess.

I've looked through this thread and couldn't find a specific answer to this somewhat simple question.

If I played varsity basketball 3 years, and JV basketball 1 year, do i waste 2 lines for this? And if I don't want to use a line on just JV Basketball 1 year, would it seem like i only did basketball for 3 years? What are other people doing with non-varsity sports?

So technically my first language was Chinese and I still speak it at home, but (go figure) my English is way better. Should I still put Chinese as my native language/primary language at home? I just don't want to be caught taking any unnecessary tests (TOEFL)

One more thing -one extracurricular that I do is year around, but they have this lovely policy of giving me a stipend for my summer involvement since it's a bit more work that during the school year. Should I just list this as an EC and don't even mention the stipend part? Or divide it in two and put the summer part under work experience?

If a school accepts the common app, but doesn't mention the number of teacher recs they require on their website or supplement, is it safe to assume that they require two (the number in the full version of the common app)?

Has anyone else noticed a problem with the Caltech online CA supplement? I can't seem to save multiple grades for my math/science EC list, i.e. the drop-down list for EC participation from grades 9 thru 12. This occured when I used Firefox (my main browser) and IE 6/7. I'd appreciate a solution if anyone has one. Thanks.

How important does it look for the top colleges for an applicant to have a Sun Certified Java Associate certification?????

the SCJA is a very prestigious test, that most people take when they are in their 30's... so will it look good if I take it????? I mean I am sure I can pass it

Whoops I didn't see this thread before. If an admin sees this, feel free to delete the other thread I made.

For the Common Application writing sample, I'm choosing my own topic and thusly I have a rather obscure structuring so other samples don't really help me much with this issue.

Does anybody have any advice on what roughly the final wordcount should be? How many words over the limit is allowed, and at what point would they just get plain annoyed? It says 250 words minimum on the site, but that's purely a minimum, is there any real ceiling? At this point, I'm guessing it's going to end up at about 600-650 words.

Help me out please, I'm trying to finish this essay up by tonight and I don't really want to have to take out 300 words if I'm wrong :-)

Thanks

For the activities writing sample - do you all think it HAS to be 150 words, or is it alright to go over by about 10-20?

The online version of the Common Application does not give me the option in the Family section to put down that I do not have parents or gaurdians. I was emancipated from the foster system the moment I graduated from high school. What do I do? The application forces me to put down their address, their names, their level of education. I know none of these.

try putting na (not applicable) in the fields. then in the extra info section, explain why you do not have guardians.

Whats the limit on how long the common application essay is? My essay is 1200 words

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't have time to scroll through this entire thread.

I have a decent, but not stellar, SAT score and am retaking them in October. I want to apply EA to some schools (Nov 1 deadline) ... so I know I have to report my old SAT score, but will the admissions council see my new SAT scores in time? If I do much better on my second SAT i want them to consider those scores instead....
