So the part where I check off for sports, I put those as well? And anything that doesn't fit I put in the additional comments section?

Can your teacher send a paper recommendation if you do the common app online?

yes...........10car

Is that a yes to me? So can my teacher send a paper recommendation even though I do the Common App online? If so, I have to designate the teacher under the "school forms" section and put her email address. Is there a way to tell Common App that the teacher is doing a paper rec?

tuer - I am not sure there is any other way to do it. Just print out the forms. If you do it when logged in, some of the form will be filled out: your name, etc. Then you give it to the teacher, who fills it out, usually attaching a letter, and sends it in.

There is no way for a teacher to fill out the form online. Too bad!

Guys, I haven't got a clear answer yet.

One of my colleges are "SAT Optional" and I don't want them to see my SAT scores, but I am submitting the Common App to them. There is no place where I can check off that I don't want them to consider my SAT scores. So, Do I HAVE to put in those scores in the common app?

This is kind of an assy thing to ask, but:
What colleges do you know of (northeast, fairly highly selective schools) that do not have a common app supplement? Or have a supplement, but there aren't any open-ended questions?
I've applied to the bulk of my schools already, but I'm looking for a few extra ones in which the application is easy.
Thanks.

Hello,
Does anyone know how long the short answer response (about extra-curriculars) should be? The instructions say, "150 words or fewer," but there is room for over 2000 words. Should I stick to 150, or what??

yes, I'd say stick roughly to 150 words. you can be slightly over.

nrjg - I think it is 2000 characters, not words. But, yes, when they ask you to write 150 words, that is an appoximation of how long it should be. That is to say 160 - 170 works is ok, 200 is pushing it, but ok if really necessary. Learning to be less verbose is a good thing.

Psychgirl, your link doesnt seem to work :S

If I want to change the essays I send, can I make multiple accounts in common app? As long as I make sure I only send one application per school?

I volunteered and was accepted for the following two jobs:

1) Volunteer coordinator of a national charity
2) Sunday school teacher for my local mosque

Do these count as ECs or Work Experience? I don't get paid for either, but some of the other teachers and workers do get paid. I chose not to get paid. That way, I didn't have to go through the hassle of getting a work permit (and I didn't want money from a charity or mosque anyways)

Optimization - they are ECs.

Question about the "Additional Information" section: is it frowned upon if you write a mini-essay here? Like, would it help or hurt if I did a small biographical sketch here? Besides commenting about some medical issues, I also included such mundane info as what hobbies I like doing and what travel experience I've had (stuff that I didn't have space to mention elsewhere).

Is this just too much?

is it an advantage to put on the application that you took a Kaplan Course for SAT during the summer ? Or would it be bad to add that on because the admissions might expect a higher score ?

aaa007: I think that's totally fine. I wrote a paragraph about how I moved around the world a lot and how it helped shape my attitude and outlook on life.

My question is related to the Bio section.

For the "If you wish to be identified with particular ethnic group, please check all that apply"

Here's the situation.

I am Indian, so I selected "Asian, sub continent India"

but that's not the problem.

Here's the problem:
My dad was born and raised in India and my mother likewise in Uganda.
What country do I select in the drop-down box next to my ethnicity?
Can I put either one?

Here's a pic to see what im talking about

For the Additional Info part of the commonapp, it says to list other colleges you have attended and the courses. So can someone tell me how they want us to put down the courses and stuff? Do they want the credit values attached, date taken, ect?

Thank-you very much.

sf49 - you could just put India under that one and Uganda under 'Other'

I have everything in bullet form in it, and I went down a list for about a page describing a lot of things like grading system changes at my school. Then, I elaborated on my extracurriculars, with about 4 one-line bullets each, and that took another page.

Now, I have 3 pages, with the 3rd page describing what my summer programs were. It sounds like too much, but I've cut it down as much as I could. Is this length too much?
