ACT: didn’t take!

SAT II:
japanese (800, but they might have not gotten it)
US history (770)
world history (700)

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): like a 3.8? not that good

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 34thish/550, but should have been better. i went to three different high schools, and i wrote pretty extensively about the disadvantages i had academically.

AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (5), comparative gov’t (5), psych (5), japanese (5), english language (5)

IB (place score in parenthesis): none, never offered at school

Senior Year Course Load: AP lit, AP gov/econ, AP calc AB, AP environmental science (planning on dropping after I consult cornell), debate, piano

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP scholar with distinction, national merit scholarship semifinalist, national forensic league (degree of superior distinction, highest in team), and random stuff from speech & debate
also, lion’s club speaker contest–i was the club and zone level champion.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
campus antiwar (co-chair, 2009-2010), student gov’t (south senate), speech and debate (captain of parliamentary debate, 2011-2012), gay-straight alliance (board/inter-club council rep), amnesty international (2011-2012 president-elect, but moved to a different high school), national honor society, california scholastic federation

Summer Activities: took a course on the ethics of war and political violence at columbia university summer HS program
went to debate camp at UT austin for two summers

Essays: my common app one I was really proud of, I wrote about asian-american stereotypes/the model minority myth, and how my “greatest achievement” was realizing that i didn’t have to be bound by the societal expectations for asian-american females to be meek and subservient in the status quo, and how i challenged that via my political activism and stuff. i know it’s a common topic, but i think i pulled it off.

i kinda slacked on the supplement, i just talked about how i proved my true passion for government and how cornell’s curriculum fosters an intrinsic desire to learn about what you really care about blah blah blaaah

Teacher Recommendation:
Counselor Rec: pretty good i think, he said he tailored it to cornell. he’s also just in general someone who has his shiz together.

Additional Rec: i think they were both really good.
first was from my AP lit teacher, who only knew me for like a week but got to know me really well since she was also the advisor for GSA. i think she wrote a really good letter, but i didn’t see it. she’s been a teacher for a while though, and i think she knew what she was doing.
second one was from my professor at the summer course from cornell, i already read his written evaluation and i’m almost certain he wrote a good rec letter too.

Other
State (if domestic applicant): califooohnia

School Type: average public… doesn’t usually send kids to ivies unless they’re athletic recruits or URM or something

Ethnicity: asian-american (japanese-korean), first generation

Gender: female

Income Bracket: upper-middle, around $100k with both parents but around $40k with just my mom, with whom i live full-time. still waiting on financial aid, but a lot of my relatives have volunteered to pitch in so i’m not too worried

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nothing lol

Reflection

Strengths: driven, passionate, “not your typical asian”, i really emphasized how i really felt passionate about politics and injustice and, even with my less-than-stellar scores, i’ve always had genuine interest and never “resume-padded”

Weaknesses: scores. GPA. lol.

Why you think you were accepted: i have no idea. college is a crapshoot.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: nowhere. withdrawing my $280 UC applications as i type this…

General Comments:
i am so so so happy! and i swear i am not a ■■■■■ okay i really did get into cornell with these stats, haha.
i found out at 2PM and after 5th period me and a bunch of my friends all ran with me to the library, when i found out i started crying and hugging and screaming and the librarian got really ****ed off at us lol.

General Comments:
Ok, so this year I was really confused with admissions for our school. Most people said I was guaranteed or undershooting, and not trying to sound smug or anything, but I consider myself one of the stronger candidates who applied for Cornell ED, both in my school and in general. But this year, NO ONE from our school got accepted, which is really weird given its competitive nature and that around 15 people applied. And I wasn’t even deferred. Actually, only people with a lot of legacy got deferred. So I’m almost convinced that Cornell is biased against our school. Cornell has always been one of my top choices and favorite schools, so please convince me otherwise or clarify stuff, thank you!

Congrats to you all, but there is no doubt that college admissions is a crapshoot.

Deferred from ILR.
No, I am not bitter. My parents pushed me into applying to Cornell anyway.

@hurray your stats are good, but nothing seems to jump out.

@Hurray: I’m in the same boat as you. EVERYONE said I was getting in, and my academics are a bit below yours. One of the major reasons is because we are Asian males applying to engineering. Im guessing that more than 50% of engineering applicants are Asian males (and that’s conservative). When Cornell only accepts 16% Asians (including females), its easy to see why we didn’t get in.

D2 was accepted. I’ll have her post her stats on this thread when she gets home tonight, but I believe she’s already posted them in CC’s Stats Profiles (under the Discussion Menu).

Congratulations to everyone!

Also - ILR does reject during ED. If you go back through the threads from last year, you’ll find one or two people who were rejected during ED.

AND - last year’s threads show that plenty of people who were deferred during the ED phase actually got in during RD!

[ b]General Comments: I was dissapointed, but also kinda happy because I thought I was gonna be rejected. I reeeally want to go to Cornell, so I’m staying with it for RD. Any tips to win them over? I’m going to finish up my current project at the lab and hopefully win a few science fairs and do better at the state-wide and maybe national level.

For people who were not accepted and not clear as to why, have someone else read your application again. I am seeing some rejects with very good stats. I don´t believe it is as random as people like to believe. Before you send out your RD applications, go over your application again to make sure your ECs look good and your essays are well written.

People who got deferred - put together another packet for Cornell. Write another essay to let them know Cornell is still your first choice, get additional rec letters (maybe from a coach, or an employer), include any additional awards, and first semester transcript (hope it is a good one). If your GC is willing, ask him/her to contact Cornell adcom after the holidays to find out how to make your deferral into acceptance, and if possible, try to addresse it in your packet. I would send the packet in by end of Jan.

Congratulations to all who got accepted.

I agree, it is a crap shoot. Often it is just dumb luck. One thing does stand out though-it would appear that you are from a high income family, but you have no work experience-when admissions decisions come down to tiny things, this could have hurt you. If you want, feel free to pm your essay (My D has already been accepted at a school ED so you need not worry about your essay being ripped off…) Often an essay is well written, and technically perfect, but it is not unique, heartfelt or tells the Adcom much about who you are. Nothing at all wrong with Pokemon (My daughter’s essay was about Casey Anthony!) if it shows who YOU are.

Xeroday & Hurray,

You are at a distinct disadvantage competing against your demographic. However in at least Hurray’s case, your EC’s in terms of leadership & excellence are average. Many people look at your stats & automatically tell you that you are in. However for your demographic there are more students with similiar stats than spots available. This is where all of the intangibles come into play…your essays, letters of rec, & EC’s.

so basically this is what im seeing: all of the asian kids like myself with really really amazing stats (high test scores, gpa, amazing ecs etc) are getting rejected while at the same time all the other kids of other races with sometimes far worse stats compared to the asians are getting in?!?!?! not tyring to bring race into this thing but seriously, just look for yourself. If you see a kid who has really awesome stats but got rejected, chances are they are asian. I recognize that as a private institution Cornell has every right to choose applicants on the basis of race, and in fact, asians are at a distinct disadvantage in the college app process. but seriously, how can you not be ****ed as an AA like me with great stats who got rejected while some other kid who have worse stats are getting in? Its like training your entire life for the olympics, finishing first, and watching the gold medal go to the guy who finished in last. RIDICULOUS!. Thats my rant, thanks.

“Its like training your entire life for the olympics, finishing first, and watching the gold medal go to the guy who finished in last. RIDICULOUS!. Thats my rant, thanks.”

…the problem with this analogy is that you can’t consider any accepted Cornell student as one who finished last. In reality they have a "threshold’ of stats that they feel predict academic success at Cornell. What they are saying is that a 1400 SAT student is likely to be successful at Cornell. The 1550 SAT student may not have to work as hard & may take their work to a higher conceptual level, but in some cases the 1400 student may add more to campus. I know that in my D’s case, she was admitted with low average stats, however her EC’s demonstrated both outstanding leadership & excellence. She has continued this trend at Cornell, adding to the college’s visability & overall community. I liken it to a sports team. You can’t have just all “stats” guys, to have a great team you must have role players who make the overall team better through their tangable & intangable contributions.

guys … please stop saying you got rejected because “I’m Asian”. my school is 30% Latino and 30% Asian, so my guidance counselor has a lot of wisdom on the affirmative action issue and its a whole lot more complex than just trace. It’s also really degrading to the admissions officers. Pure quota systems are extremely rare since university of California v. bakke. I’m Asian, and i respect the practice of affirmative action, especially on a financial basis.
