Reflection

Strengths: well, i got 2190 as international student?? well i know so many gets 2400 but i was proud of myself. well Research ? I thought of myself different because I loved performing arts as an asian male( i thought it was not common).

Weaknesses: ECs, not good leadership, SAT scores,

General Comments: well i wish cornell tells me why they rejected me. i am over it now. getting results soon from chicago and u of m … i am not really hoping to get in uchicago, but u of m though … after i am applying to LACs. like oberline or colgate. It was bitter rejection but i have to move on. Contratulation others who got in…

Well i have more ECs btw. I completed all 10. I wrote Research as my 1st EC. then Musical and forensics and ski…

^ hm… my SAT’s were a lot lower then you, but I did a lot of volunteer work and had a lot of leadership.

With all due respect to hardworking Asian students being rejected ‘in favor of’ others with lesser objective scores. One thing I’ve picked up admissions officers is that they’re pretty savvy about kids who are applying to schools simply because it’s a status thing. (As one officer of a Top 5 USN&WR-ranked LAC said, “Ask yourself if you’d apply here if our US News ranking dropped down to #12.” One thing that struck me in viewing lots of LAC’s and Ivies this last summer was that you’d see almost no Asian students at the LAC admissions info sessions and tours, but when we got to Penn and Columbia, you’d see whole families of them - sometimes with the oldest kid being maybe 14 and already being groomed to go there, or maybe some other Ivy. My very unscientific sense was that what was important to many of those families (and, of course, it’s not limited to any one group) was that their kid go to “an Ivy League school.”

So, perhaps some of those rejected at Cornell or some other Ivy were not able to articulate a good enough reason for going to that particular school based on something other than its reputation, or somehow fed into that stereotype. Just a thought.

I’m sure there’re a million and one reasons to rationalize rejections and acceptances. It’s an utter waste of time to argue over it. At the end of the day it’s only the admission officers that know why. I’m an international Asian student, so if anyone gets the ****ty end of the shaft, it’s probably me. But meh, c’est la vie: what is there to do anyway?

i genuinely wanted to go to cornell, i won’t talk about why because i don’t want people from school to see my post and find out who i am. but hopefully, BBGunt, my next choices will know that i don’t apply to colleges mindlessly just because of reputation.

General Comments: i used my common app essay to explain my weak math mark

Yes it sucks as an engineer, in any school, but I feel really badly for you kids feeling giddy about architecture. You will have no idea what hit you. If you love it, you’ll stick with it, but the majority really have to dig deep down into their souls to figure out if its the right path. Plan on very little sleep but a great group of people who are going through the same thing.

Decision: Rejected! (AEM, CAS alternate)

[] Weaknesses: GPA, test scores (in comparison to other Asians)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My low GPA and SAT scores for an Asian.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Took me a while because I didn’t want to post immediately after – it’d be weird to be excited about a rejection. I’m not sure if the alternate schools actually read my application. To be honest, I wasn’t surprised or upset. After 5 minutes of receiving the decision, my life was normal. But it’s for the best! Good luck to everyone who’s going!

Also, from the four school districts I know, only one Asian was accepted this year ED. Very strange. Oh well.
