applying to cals biology major, is it true that cals has a noticeably higher acceptance rate comparing to other colleges?

It makes a difference and it’s not difficult to understand why. Ik we all love Cornell, and that’s certainly a factor when determining fit, but think about it in a more concrete way:
Colleges want their yield rate as high as possible, without decreasing their students’ stats. In the RD pool, way more kids have Cornell’s average stats than they can admit. As long as an ED applicant has the college’s average stats, it should theoretically be in the college’s best interest to admit them as that will instantly increase the yield rate. Of course there still isn’t enough space to admit everyone that meet’s their averages and they only want a certain percentage of the class made up of ED applicants anyways, but that logic makes perfect sense to me as to explain one of the reasons why we have an objective advantage.

@mahoushojo sort of true. It’s a bit higher, but only a few percentage points. ILR used to be known as the back door, but I believe that it and CALS are close now.

Since the advantage ED is being discussed, I want to get something related off of my chest.
Yes I love Cornell. It’s by far my favorite school. But it’s also a school that’s alumni tend to be successful, both in terms of giving back to society and making money. There’s nothing wrong with wanting those things, and knowing that ED is one way to increase the chance of them happening.
My love for Cornell isn’t the sole reason why I applied ED, and I’m not ashamed of that. I hope others feel the same way!
And I hope I don’t get hate for this post lol. I’ve just been feeling guilty grappling with these thoughts lately and have wanted to be honest. Probably partially induced because the wait till decisions is really getting to me.

Does the ED decision come by mail and by email on the same day? Or just by email?

@Connor2019, Why exactly would your post get negative replies?

@ovoxoboy1222, online decision first, followed later (no idea how many days later) by mail

i wonder if adcom made most of their decisions already

Ezra is watching~~~~

From what I heard, we get an email to log in to check our application status, and if you get accepted, i think some music plays.

@Connor2019 Go Average Students!!!

WOOOP WOOOP =D>

The fact that great stats at other, non-Ivy or high level colleges are made “average” or even low at Ivy leagues is kind of depressing. Like, wut…

would Cornell be considered a reach for me?

From the comments on the post, it sounds like you’re in the ball park. Good luck!

@connect1234 well because I’ve seen some people attack Ivy applicants’ intentions on chance me threads and stuff. One time someone applying to the same major as me was basically accused of looking for a back door into an Ivy.
And I don’t want people to think that’s like me! Haha

Someone chance me too?

Will chance Back! - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1694612-chance-an-indian-for-gatech-purdue-umich-uw-madison-cornell-all-early-will-chance-back-p1.html

Honestly, what is the point of asking for chances now? Not saying that I didn’t ask for a chance months ago before I decided upon which schools to apply to and when–I used it as a guage-- but come on, it’s a little over a week until decisions. All you’re asking people to do is pad your ego. I get it, it makes you feel more assured and in some senses, it tell you what you lack. But you already know that you’re a strong applicant if you’re on CC so why are you imploring others to tell you so? You know you are.

Well, you’re kinda right @khagedorn96, but the deal is, after being rejected rd by cornell last year, I really feel like what I know/think about myself is wrong all the time. I’m a horrible horrible self-critic. And in times when the wait is agonizing and demoralizing and depressing, a “solid chance” from a random internet stranger on CC is reassuring.

Nah.

@mahoushojo When I went to the CALS info session, the dean of admissions led it and said the acceptance rate is around the same 14% as the whole university

@BetterThanBest
How does one “chance” you? The secret formula for getting into an Ivy League school remains unknown, especially to people who are in the same boat as you

Hey guys, I haven’t done a chance me since 10th grade. Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1713451-chance-me-at-ed-cornell-and-other-schools.html?new=1

@BetterthanBest you’re ■■■■■■■ impressive. More impressive than me. If you don’t get in at Cornell somewhere like Johns Hopkins or Uchicago or Northwestern, I’m sure, will love to have you. You’re a very strong candidate, among the 99% as all of your tests indicate. Cheers
