OFFICIAL CORNELL REGULAR DECISION 2016 Results thread!

Did all the admitted students receive their envelopes today? Did those waitlisted receive a letter? I didn’t have an online decision and Cornell is my top choice. Obviously, I’m freaking out a little because my friend who didnt have an online decision got in today through the mail. Was just wondering if waitlist letters come out at a different date than admit letters.

I was accepted and I’ve yet to receive my letter. I don’t think there is a correlation between acceptance and day of letter received

thank you so much for answering!
I’m hoping for the best and congratulations on your admission to cornell :)

Gender: F

Reflection
Strengths: I think my interest was very genuine and my essays were really unique. Honestly CMU is what I would be if I were a university, so I’m happy that really came through!
Weaknesses: SATs… I never liked standardized tests…
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because I’m Scottish :stuck_out_tongue: But really, I don’t know… it was so competitive this year I’m ecstatic that I was accepted!! I think it probably is because I sent in an arts supplement (with a few obviously Pittsburgh pictures) as an engineering applicant?
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Rutgers, Villanova, Lafayette, Lehigh, Carnegie Mellon & Cornell; Rejected: Duke (Don’t know why I applied…) & Princeton (EA Deferred)
General Comment: Right now I’m torn between Cornell and Carnegie Mellon… So it will be interesting… Financially they are both just about equally impossible, so Lehigh if finances don’t work out… In general, congrats to everyone accepted! And for everyone who wasn’t, you’re all still overly qualified awesome applicants, and I will say that I have faith that you guys will be working on incredible projects in the future!

**I had no idea how to do the fancy big green font… lol

College: Human Ecology
Major: Nutritional Sciences

SAT I: 2070 (CR: 600, M: 690, W: 780)
ACT: 29
SAT II: Math 1- 710, Chemistry- 710
Unweighted GPA: 3.85-ish
AP: English Language & Composition (5), US History (5), Statistics (Pending), Physics B (Pending), French Language (Pending)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Statistics, AP Physics B, AP French Language, Pre-Calculus Honors, English, Art, Government, Economics
Major Awards: National Science Bowl Civility Award, National French Contest (various), RIT Computing Medal Award, STEP Research Competition 1st, 2nd, 2nd places, and more…

Extracurriculars: I can’t list them all, but here’s a few… National Honor Society, National French Honor Society (Vice-President), Cultural Connections Club (President, Treasurer), High School Newspaper (Managing Editor for Writing & Reporting, News Editor, Staff Writer), Math Team (Top 10 in school), French Club, Charity Book Club, UMOJA club, Kente Cloth Group, etc.
Job/Work Experience: School Store Manager, Dental Intern/Assistant
Volunteer/Community service: Hospital (150+ hours), Mosque (200+ hours), Soup Kitchen (40+ hours)
Summer Activities: Syracuse University Summer College for High School Students, interning, volunteering
Essays: I am a strong writer and have had two English teachers read over my work. I wrote about diversity in my CommonApp essay and about how I came about wanting to study Nutrition in my CHE-specific essay
Teacher Recommendation: I waived my right to see them, and neither offered to show me. I’m assuming that they were great… I really don’t think that any of my teachers have anything bad to say about me
Counselor Rec: It was probably a general “insert name here” type of essay, but I guess it worked!
Interview: I feel that it went really well. I asked really inquisitive questions… ones that couldn’t be found anywhere online or in a brochure. It also helps that my interviewer was really down to earth!

State: New York!
School Type: Medium/small, suburban (~950 students)
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female
Hooks: URM, First-generation American

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I knew that Cornell has a big issue with recruiting African-American students, and so it definitely helped that I wrote my essay about diversity. I also think that my extracurricular activities were particularly striking… my activities sheet is 3 pages long!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I got accepted to all of my schools (Fordham University, American University, Syracuse University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University at Buffalo, Le Moyne College), though I do wish that I believed in myself a little more and applied to more competitive universities
General Comment: I was still surprised that I got in, though. I made the mistake of thinking that it’s all about the grades (as you can see, my SAT score and GPA aren’t exactly stellar). It goes to show that you never know until you try. I have a friend who got into Harvard with a 1900 SAT! I’m still unsure as to where I want to go. Cornell may not be the best thing for me career-wise since I hope to become a dentist. I’m waiting to hear back from a Combined Degree Program with the University at Buffalo, but if that doesn’t work out then I’ll be submitting my deposit! Good luck to everyone else who got in, and go Big Red!

[] Volunteer/Community service: Developed website for the educational foundation in my city, which supports our schools.
[] Summer Activities: Swim Team through the summer after soph year. The above volunteering after junior year.
[] Essays: Common App was about my love for running. I thought it was really well done. Engineering essay was great in my opinion.
[] Teacher Recommendation: May not have been as strong as I thought they would be. One junior year AP Chem teacher was probably good, but the sophomore year english teacher may have been sub standard.
[] Counselor Rec: I imagine it was very good.
[] Interview: Went very well. The guy and I chatted for over an hour (he spent 30 minutes each with 10 other kids from my school) including 10-15 minutes about running and about the old XC Coach at my school, who he knows. Of course, the interview doesn’t matter at all for Cornell. Damn.

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] State (if domestic applicant): California
[] School Type: 1300 students, public, highly ranked
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $250k +
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy. My Dad went to Cornell.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]

[li] Strengths: Running and being an Eagle Scout and my SAT score. Grades 10 - 12 grade (4.0 unweighted first semester this year)
[/li]

[li] Weaknesses: My GPA is pretty bad because I slacked off freshman year and played runescape 3-4 hours every day.
[/li]

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my GPA really held me back. I thought I had a good shot at Cornell. I wonder if my Dad being legacy is the only thing that even got me waitlisted.
[/li]

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[/li]

Accepted: Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, UCSB, UCLA, Colgate, University of Washington, USC
Waitlisted: Johns Hopkins
Rejected: Duke, Northwestern, Berkeley
Waiting: Georgetown

[/ul]
General Comments:

I thought I might really like Cornell. The stories of how hard it is percieved to be made it incredibly appealing to me. My Dad loved it and wanted me to go there. I spent a week at Cornell over the summer at a running camp, and that almost sealed the deal. Unfortunately, I could not get over the weather and bind myself to Cornell by applying early. I have suitable alternatives in either UCLA or USC, but am left leaving the college process hurt by rejections and waitlists.

[ *] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at a community library for a summer, in addition to school and NHS related service throughout the four years
[ *] Summer Activities: Took art courses.
[ *] Essays: Common App was about my cultural background. I spoke about Beirut, Lebanon, and my relationship with it. The Human Ecology essay was basically about why I was applying in relation to my life goals; I used a metaphor of magic throughout the essay.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: My English teacher wrote it, but I have no idea what she wrote. I hope it was good!

[ *] State (if domestic applicant):
[ *] Country (if international applicant): I live in Bahrain.
[ *] School Type: It’s a DoDDS school. Around 400 students in the high school.
[ *] Ethnicity: Lebanese
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *]Income Bracket: Not entirely certain
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing.

Reflection
[ *] Strengths: My involvement in both the visual arts and theater, and possibly my GPA. Perhaps the fact that I’m an IB student? Not sure how that factors into their decisions.
[ *] Weaknesses: My SAT II scores weren’t wonderful, but then again, I wasn’t applying to a college that necessarily needed high SAT II scores. I also don’t have much work experience.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not entirely sure. Perhaps they saw a dreamer in me and liked my brand of idealism. My portfolio may have also played a large role in their decision.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Pratt Institute, Parsons The New School, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Rejected from UT Austin.

General Comments: I guess I’m somewhat of an anomaly applicant, considering most of my other applications went to art schools. I was absolutely floored when I got my acceptance - it wasn’t something I saw coming at all. As of now I’m weighing my options between Cornell and Pratt - I love both schools so much for different reasons. It’s a really difficult decision, but I’m glad it happened this way. :)

[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

[ b]Reflection**
[ *] Strengths: My test scores, grades, number of extracurriculars, college classes taken, National Merit Finalist
[ *] Weaknesses: None of my extracurriculars really stood out, and I had very few leadership positions. Also, I thought my essay was crap, partly because I did it the day the application was due.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: High test scores, good grades, fairly challenging classes, high number of extracurriculars and volunteer activities
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Michigan State Honors College, Waitlisted by WashU

[ b]General Comments:** I got a likely letter (actually email) in the middle of March, which surprised me when I got, but meant I wasn’t too surprised when the official acceptance came. I wouldn’t have been shocked if I hadn’t been accepted, as I didn’t feel like there was much on my application that really popped, but I was hoping anyway. Also, do you essay earlier than I did. If I had gotten rejected or waitlisted I probably would have blamed it on my essay, as it was pretty bad, at least for me.

General Comments:
My advice: write a kick-ass essay. Seriously. One that will make the admissions peeps laugh, cry, whatever. Just make it good, and make sure you stand out.

[ *] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars, GPA, lack of awards
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe the being female thing. I like to think it was because of the above listed strengths, ahah.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UCI, UCD, UCSD, UCLA, UCB, USC, Cornell (obviously); Waitlisted: Caltech, WashU; Denied: Stanford, Harvard, Dartmouth, Duke, Hopkins

General Comments:
I’m happy with where I ended up. College admissions are always slightly unpredictable, so I’m glad I didn’t end up unlucky in this process.

Decision: Waitlisted at ILR

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1960 (610 in Math, 650 in Reading, 710 in Writing)
[] ACT: 29
[] SAT II: 650 in Physics, 650 in World History, 610 in US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): I think it was around a 3.95 (4.15 W at the time, 4.2 now)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2 out of around 150-160 (the number of graduating seniors keeps changing as more kids get the minimum amount of credits and pass the exit exam and such)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): I only mentioned my 4 in AP Psychology
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: Semester 1- Honors Chemistry, AP English Lit, AP Calculus AB, Spanish 3, Tutoring for a Geometry class, Music History. Semester 2 was the same with the exception of Honors Econ instead of Music History (believe it or not, these were all the AP classes my school offered)
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): eh, just some regional piano competition awards, minor school awards, etc
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): President of the Debate Team, President and founder of the Music Club, Secretary of the Astronomy Club, Chess Club, 2011 Raytheon Engineering Games, National Honors Society, UC transfer level courses at local community college since I was in 8th grade [I got an A in Political Science, Math 125 (basically College Algebra 2), English 101 and 103 (the highest 2 classes needed to complete GE requirement if you’re not an English major). Got a B in Advanced College Algebra], project manager for my school’s music concerts since 10th grade (along with performing solo piano and as an accompaniment), tutoring (tutored precalculus in 10th grade, physics in 11th, and geometry and AP Calculus in 12th), keyboardist in the pit percussion section of our drum line, keyboardist in the school jazz band, Peer College Counselor (helping students register for SATs and whatnot, informing my peers about college), Georgetown University Summer International Relations program, and some other trivial stuff I can’t recall
[] Job/Work Experience: unfortunately none
[] Volunteer/Community service: tutoring, peer college counseling (didn’t get home from school until around 6)
[] Summer Activities: summer program at Georgetown (2011), learning German on my own the summer before, taking English 103 the summer before that
[] Essays: pretty strong IMO. Common App essay was about the influence my physics teacher (a Cornell alumnus) had on me. Cornell supplement was decent (I mentioned my love of English history since I was 7 and how much labor law has driven it and evolved throughout time and how it’s affected me and such)
[] Teacher Recommendation: the one my English teacher did almost moved me to tears; didn’t get to see the one my physics teacher did
[] Counselor Rec: probably decent
[] Additional Rec: my physics teacher submitted an additional rec through Cornell’s alumni ambassador association. I think it must have been good considering how much he knows me as a student and the profound affect he’s had on my education
[li] Interview: went well, I loved ILR even more hearing my interviewer share his experience with me. We talked for almost two hours :-P
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: public, VERY low-performing
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: ~14K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Don’t think being poor or a musician counts
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA perhaps (relative to where I’m from), highest SAT scores in my school (yeah, hard to believe, I know), good essays, my most influential teacher being a Cornell graduate? Having done a lot for my school (or at least tried to), took every AP class offered at my school except for AP Spanish, being a musician.
[] Weaknesses: SAT/ACT scores compared to other applicants
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea. There are so many amazingly qualified students here that have been rejected that it leaves me baffled as to how they choose the students they want. My teacher’s connections to Cornell definitely helped, I’m sure.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: UMass Boston, Elmira College, St Peter’s College, Manhattanville, University of New Mexico, American University
Waitlisted: Cornell, George Washington, Catholic U of America, William and Mary
Rejected: Georgetown (EA deferred), Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, UPenn

[/ul]General Comments: March 29th was a pretty horrible day for me, but I feel blessed having at least been given a chance by the ILR decisions committee. I learned that if waitlistees don’t get in off the list this year, that we have a guaranteed transfer for next year (ILR is one of the few schools at Cornell that does this). So if I can’t get in this year, I’m definitely transferring next year. Congrats to all who got in and hopefully I can see you guys this or next year. To those who have been rejected, I feel your pain, but all you guys are AMAZING, and don’t let any rejections get in the way of your success. You guys are all superstars and will make it far in life. All it takes is hope, hard work, and diligence. And to all my fellow waitlistees, let’s keep hoping for each other that they can make some room for us.

DECISION: ACCEPTED  at college of Human Ecology for Nutrition and Food Sciences

[ ] SAT(breakdown): 2040- 650 Math, 680 Reading, 710 Writing
[ *] ACT: 29
[ *] SAT II: 760 in Literature, 690 in US History, 590 in Math (I took it only for the Cornell HumEc requirement, but I took it before I had taken PreCalculus as a class…)
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): around 3.9? I go to a tough college prep though (weighted for full high school career is 4.05, senior year is 4.15)
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top ten out of 80 seniors
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis):Statistics (4), US History (4)
[ *] Senior Year Course Load:AP bio, AP Art, Spanish 5 honors (the school’s top level, some of last year’s ap students who are now seniors are in it), Precalculus (since I took stats last year *stupidly), Senior English, 1/2 year art history, 1/2 year required speech class
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): …hahaha…no I’m pretty sure nothing…

[ /list][ b]Subjective:**[list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Multiple job stuff, Varsity Tennis (spring sport), Community Service, Martial Arts (I’m a 2nd-degree blackbelt in Tang Soo Do, I teach some too), Varsity Swimming (winter sport), Alumni Career Connections committee (it’s a school club), I also play flute and mountain bike and do art but I dunno if that counted for anything lol…
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Landscape (oh yeah i do)- 4 hrs/wk, babysitting -on and off, approx 8 hrs/month
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Homeless shelter (Co-leader)-every other friday evening, approx 3 hrs each time,
[ *] Summer Activities: I work more throughout, and summer before senior year I did a week-long camping volunteer program to help assist mentally disabled children do fun stuff and I also took a college visiting trip, summer before junior year I went on a tour with the Hawaii Music Ambassadors (they have one from every state) around Europe (playing flute).
[ *] Essays: In my Commonapp essay, wrote about my grueling black belt test (pretty motivational if I do say so myself :P). I thought my Human Ecology essay was really bad, personally. I talked about how I was lead to the nutrition major because the only things that I can memorize easily are song lyrics and nutrition labels/facts, and how I became a vegan and how there’s so much to learn about nutrition, etc.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: heard they were good
[ *] Counselor Rec:  I love my councilor shes adorable.
[ *] Additional Rec: My junior physics teacher & high school adviser, hes cornell alumni and really high strung but he was happy to write it
[ *] Interview: The lady was really nice, we talked for like 1 an 1/2 hours in a coffee shop- this is natural for her though from what I heard from other people, she just likes doing really long interviews so don’t freak out haha.

[ *] State (if domestic applicant):Hawaii (reppin it)
[ *] School Type: rigorous college prep (it and one other school fight for pretty much all of hawaii’s Ivy league acceptances, although this year I was the only one in my class to get into an Ivy [I’m stoked but I feel bad for all the people who really wanted it too… not fair to them!])
[ *] Ethnicity: Caucasian and Native American (Ojibwe)
[ *] Gender:Female
[ *]Income Bracket: 100,000 -120,000 (but my mom-a doctor- works 3 part-time jobs and my dad -a nurse- works one full-time)
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m a URM (as the school has brought up to me multiple times lol) being Native American. I also am from Hawaii, which is probably a slightly less competitive state for high level schools because it’s a smaller population state and also because our public school system is really bad (For the national math competency test at the public high school near me, only 10% of the senior students passed…). However, it still is really hard to get into schools. Also maybe my range of activities?

[ b]Reflection**
[ *] Strengths: Range of activities I do, being Native American, that I work a lot, being from Hawaii, strong school grades, my commonapp essay.
[ *] Weaknesses: My SAT & ACT scores aren’t that great (Specially Math II, it’s a lil bit embarrassing), I’m not top of my class/top of any teams specifically, I dunno my HumEc essay seemed pretty bad.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No idea, honestly. Does anyone really know? Although, one possible thing I thought was for Cornell having the best nutrition program in the nation, I don’t know THAT many people (actually I know like no one personally) who want to be dietitians, so I feel like it’s easier to get into the program. My friend who got rejected is definitely a stronger student than me (although I have way more diversity & work/community service on my side compared to her) was applying pre-vet,and so not only is it a way more popular major nationally but also I feel that there are dozens (or at least way more compared to nutrition) of high-level only-A’s students who are applying to this program. Same for another friend who was denied pre-med, I feel like there could be more competition because of how many people want to be doctors and did really well in school…Or I could be totally off (just a thought).
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Accepted: NYU, Drexel, Colorado state (honors program too), USC, Northeastern, Boston University. Waitlisted: Boston College. Denied: University of Chicago (Although I was deferred first), Dartmouth.

[ b]General Comments:**
No idea. Good luck everyone else! I feel like I really tried to emphasize in both my interview and all of my essays that I have a strong work ethic and also that I try my best and do lots of different things not for a good resume, but because I’m legit interested in these things. For instance AP classes, if I don’t feel like I like the subject then I’ll just take normal (lol). Anyway good luck to others! Hope this was good(?) I’d love some replies though just to know I didn’t totally just waste my time talking about myself (lol not that it was that hard…but that I’m procrastinating writing a paper…).

You shouldn’t feel bad about your scores, sand2snow, mine are worse :-P

Aw haha thanks ladyelizabeth429! I just feel like compared to all the people on here with like >2300’s I’m feeling a little unworthy lol.
