Admissions seems far more arbitrary this year than last. I’m surprised some of the people who got rejected got… well rejected. But really, you guys shouldn’t worry too much about it all. If you are aiming to get into ivies, you can still do that. In my school, many kids applied ED to an Ivy, didn’t get in, but then got into another ivy during RD. So don’t give up. Honestly, not getting in might be a good thing because now you have a choice of where you want to go once you get in college in RD (which you naturally will if you apply to enough schools).

To everyone who got in, congrats! You might feel weird now that the whole college apps thing is over and you’re in college. I had that feeling too. It was a bittersweet feeling because I kept wondering what if I didn’t do ED. But you shouldn’t worry about that now, if that’s how you feel.

Hey Battlecruiser, I was wondering just to what extent your words hold true. No offense, but are you just consoling us, or is it for real? And if it is, do you think you could take a look at my stats (on page 20) and see if I have a shot at Columbia/Brown/Penn at all?

Anyways, thanks. It’s nice to hear it, though you’ll understand why I’m a little skeptical, with Cornell being the easiest to get into and all… I want to say I hope my dream of an Ivy League school might somehow miraculously come true, but honestly, no one can really say there’s a good chance of that happening.

I’m an EMT who has worked for 6 hours a week for the past year, I studied Honors French IV to continue on to AP French V. NHS, Ski Team for four years, captain now General Comments:
out of body experience, much?

FireAdept24, you were one of the people I was referring to. While I’m not shocked you got rejected, I am somewhat surprised. I’m not sure how badly you messed up junior year, but I am pretty sure if you applied to Brown/Penn/Columbia, that you would end up getting into at least one of them. Probably not Columbia, but I could see you at either Brown or Penn.

Cornell A&S is more difficult to get into than the other colleges in Cornell, so you shouldn’t beat yourself up for not getting in there.

I guess you could say I was trying to make you feel better, but everything I said was true as well. I’ll give you some more facts. One person who applied ED to penn wharton got rejected and is now going to Brown. Another person got rejected from Stanford (I know it’s not an ivy but still) and is now going to Harvard. Yet another got rejected from Columbia and is now going to Cornell. And one person got rejected from Yale and is going to Brown I think. The year before, a kid got rejected from Cornell and now he’s at Harvard.

The game is not over until RD is done. And even then, you’ve got waiting lists, and if you still don’t get in, you can try to transfer. You shouldn’t have to settle for anything less than a reach, at this point at least.

Is it me, or has the scores for the first two CR and Math been lowered…
Cause last year, it was around 1400, now 1300’s including me 1350 that got in.

Stats:
SAT: 2290 770CR 720M 800W
SAT IIs: 760 Bio E, 740 Math I + 730 Math II (not sure which they used)

Rank: 7/148
Other stats: 5 on AP English Lit. (school does not offer AP or IB classes)
Subjective:
Essays: Common App - A funny story from my work in wildlife rehabilitation about trying to chase feral cats out of a barn with a mangy wild fox in it. No moral messages or sob stories here, admissions committee.
Cornell Supplement - They asked to know why I wanted to major in Natural Resources, and boy did I tell them. See the list of all my environmental ECs in my “General Comments”, and you’ll get the point.
Teacher Recs: One outstanding, one decent (I think. I didn’t see the 2nd.)
Counselor Rec: Decent (again, didn’t see, so no idea)
Awards: NMSF, Renesslaer Medal, Bausch and Lomb Science Award
Hook (if any): No born-with hooks, but my ECs were extremely focused on my major (and my major one was very, very unusual)
Location/Person: Small town where no one’s gone to Cornell…ever. Or for a really, really long time, anyway. Like I said, we don’t even have APs.
State or Country: NY
School Type: Public, baby.
Ethnicity: White as Michael Jackson. Wait. But yeah, I didn’t answer on the application.
Gender: Female
Other Factors: I have been working with the goal of getting into Cornell since I was in 10th grade, and my Big Red lady came through for me.
General Comments: I am 400% positive that my extracurriculars were what tipped me over into getting in. I had a decent (but, since Cornell doesn’t look at Writing, average for Cornell) SAT score, decent-to-sub-par (in Math) SAT II scores, decent (for Cornell, of course) grades, and I come from a mediocre school (as I said before, we don’t even have APs) where few apply to Cornell and absolutely no one gets in. I chose to take control of the one aspect of my application which was entirely up to my design: extracurriculars. I founded our Environmental Club and founded/designed the curriculum for an academic environmental-sciences-competition (Envirothon) team, served as a community organizer for a national student environmental organization, organized our school student-run recycling program, won a competitive internship at a biological field station over the summer, and attended an all-expenses-paid national conference for 50 selected students about public transportation. While doing all of this, I was also the president of another club/team (Debate) and secretary for another (Drama) - and I was (am) a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can see why I’m fairly sure that my ECs are why I got into CALS (for an environmental major), and that’s what I’d tell next year’s applicants: if you’re applying to CALS, FOCUS ON YOUR ECs RELATED TO YOUR MAJOR.

Holy crap. I spent all day planning out what I’d do once I got rejected/deferred. I have absolutely no idea what to do now.

[] Essays: I feel each one, even the one describing my EC activities were very sincere and hearfelt. They accurately demonstrated my desire for Cornell and commitment to learning. I think my best was the one answering “Why the College of Arts & Sciences?”
[] Teacher Recs: one decent, the other I’m not sure but she said it wasn’t as good as the one she wrote for Questbridge, but I’m sure it was good since me and her are pretty close
[] Counselor Rec: probably very good, she knows me very well, but again, I don’t know

[] State or Country: Florida

[] Ethnicity: Hispanic/Southeast Asian
[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors: great interview, few dedicated ECs, some leadership positions General Comments: I know I will probably get hated on or some, “HOW DID SHE GET IN WITH THOSE SATs???” but seriously, I love Cornell because they know I am more than my numbers. I had not the slightest bit of hope that I was going to get in, but this truly restored my faith. Sorry for those who did not get in or were deferred, just think though, now more doors and possibilities are available… do not lose hope.
Congrats to us all and WOOOO CLASS OF 2013!
