Official Cornell University 2013 Early Decisions Thread

Hi! I just got accepted ED yesterday to the ILR School at Cornell University!!! (My heart rate has not gone down yet!) This is my first post too! I want to try and meet people before I get to school! Please reply!

Decision: Accepted to College of Engineering

Stats:
SAT: 2180 730CR 760M 690W
SAT IIs: 730 Chem, 800 Math IIC, 730 Bio-M, 630 French (w/o listening)
GPA: 3.74
Rank: Not released
Other stats: 4 on AP US History

Subjective:
Essays: Decent
Teacher Recs: outstanding
Counselor Rec: superb
Hook (if any): Early Decision

Location/Person:
State or Country: New Jersey
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Indian
Gender: male
Other Factors: President of French Honor Society, President of Academic team, Treasurer of Social Studies Honor Society, Webmaster of Science National Honor Society, 150+ hours of volunteer work
General Comments: Looks like I can fulfill my dream of starting a line of Cornell grads after all!

Another thing is that before I got my decision, a certain .net site where you can chance people said my Cornell chances are 49.9% and predicted that I would be rejected. Then, I got my acceptance, and I changed it on my profile from “Applied” to “Accepted and Attending”. Then, somehow my chances mysteriously changed to 50% with an acceptance prediction. It’s like that site was saying, “Just kidding! We knew you would get in all along! We were just testing you!”

Personally, I think the site was just trying to maintain its credibility so it can say it correctly predicted my admission, when it really didn’t.

Decision: Denied to CAS.

Stats:[ul]
SAT: CR 750 M 710 W 770 (2230 composite, I took them 3 times with no significant changes)
SAT IIs: Lit 690 Math I 740
GPA: 3.6 UW 4.9 W
Rank: Does not rank, but I’m in the top 17.5% of 576 students.

Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
Essays: Common app: Mixed reviews. Cornell essay: Good reviews. I wasn’t thrilled with either of them, though.
Teacher Recs: Should be pretty good. My english teacher loved me, my chem teacher thought I was funny, and I got my class council advisor to write me an additional one.
Counselor Rec: Good, IMO.
Hook (if any): None.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
State or Country: New Jersey
School Type: Public, highhhhhly competitive
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
[/ul]Other Factors:
4 years Class Council Secretary, 3 years of Peer Mediation (Now president), 3 years on our Student Action Committee, National Honors Society member, Science Honors Society member, Girl Scout (13 years, Bronze/Silver/Gold awards), fall cheerleader for all four years (1 year captain freshman squad, 2 years JV, 1 year varsity), winter cheerleading (1 year, varsity), coached a local pop warner team (2 years).

General Comments:
I didn’t think I’d get in, but I was reallllly upset that I wasn’t even deferred. With a 3.6 GPA, I knew my chance of acceptance was slim, but I consider myself to be pretty well rounded. I have all honors courses and AP courses aside from Calculus, and have had them for all four years of high school. I guess this is what I get for going to an uber-competitive school :(

Congratulations to all who got acceptance. I’m jealous.

I had very similar stats to cupcake, with a few extra hooks (weird major/minor, legacy status) and I got rejected too.

I thought I’d be a lot angrier than I am. I went out for ice cream with my friends and I was just over it. CMU, here I come. :D

Heyy guys. Those of you who get deffered…don’t lose hope!I was in your position last year. I am from NY and applied ED to ILR. I got deferred and then got offered a Guaranteed transfer. Which turned out to be great! I am doing my first year in a city college ( I am getting a high GPA and at the same time taking classes that will transfer to cornell). Most ED’ers get a Guaranteed transfer offer. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me. I am here to help! You should follow up with Cornell if you got deffered…you should send them additional information about yourself in Janurary and tell them how much you reallly want to go to Cornell…just a letter of interest which also describes how you are spending your senior year.

Hey,

I got accepted into ILR too!! congrats!! where are you from?

From NY…and you?

Decision: Deferred…CALS

**General Comments:**I was suprised to see that was deferred and not rejected since my ACT score is really terrible. But I see this as an opportunity to get a better score and apply to other schools. Hopefully, I will get admitted to Cornell in April :D. Congratulations to all those who got accepted!

completelykate: I was SURE you’d get accepted! You’re a female into game design with great stats… how is that not a HUGE hook? Did you get rejected or deferred?
I got deferred… congrats on the Carnegie Mellon, I haven’t gotten in anywhere else yet, it’s all up to RD.
I’m really hoping to get admitted in April too, ImReachingForIt. I wonder if HumEc is known for accepting deferred applicants RD?

oh god. RD is gonna be a slaughterhouse V.

ChandlerBing: I haven’t been accepted anywhere else either (because I haven’t applied yet :S Looks like it’s going to be a long winter break).
I’m curious about JaySong though because I know that he really wanted to go there. I hope he got in.

Unfortunately JaySong got denied… poor kid, he was so cool too.
Pretty much all of us “Cornell hopefuls-ers” got rejected/deferred except for 3 kids, none of which applied to HumEc.

Neither have I! I was doing RD apps today, it’s so tiring… I’m ready to send out Binghamton, Geneseo, Tufts, and Dartmouth though
Almost done with (insert snort/laugh here) Williams and Harvard.
Then on to the (insert even bigger snort/laugh here) Yale app.
The rejections are going to come pouring in 3/31!

General Comments: I AM SO F-ING PUMPED WAHAHAHHAHA!!! CONGRATS TO ALL THAT GOT ACCEPTED.

ChandlerBing–In my opinion you need a safety. Pick another SUNY or a bit lower ranked school. All of the schools you listed are not a sure dunk. Select a probably sure dunk that you can live with.

ChandlerBing, you can insert snorts/laughs at me too. I trying for Brown, UChicago, Northwestern, Stanford(Slap me), Wash U., Johns Hopkins, and Emory… THIS IS GOING TO TAKE ME FOREVERRRRRRRRR (or all of winter break…every precious second of it)!

morrismm: My safeties are SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Geneseo, and Brandeis. Not really excited about any of them… so maybe I should add another safety.
I’m so disheartened by the whole Cornell ED business, I just don’t understand why I was deferred and applicants with significantly weaker numbers got in. My two biggest EC’s are geared towards public health/healthcare and I have leadership positions and honors. No sour grapes here, just kind of confused.
Any opinions? Maybe it’s being instate for HumEc?

1) They didn’t apply to the same program that you did.
2) They’re not you, so get over it.

Don’t fall prey to the line of thinking that suggests because a specific person got in, you didn’t get in. I can remember vividly a huge argument I got into with a girl the first semester I was at Cornell. She was arguing that the only reason why she didn’t get into Princeton was because a minority from her high school was accepted. I replied that her logic was faulty. If the minority from her high school didn’t get in a minority from some other high school would have been accepted. And that I certainly would have been accepted ahead of her.

At any rate, I’m thinking now that the most important thing we should be looking at are junior year grades. How did your grades hold up? Any blatant Regents exams scores below a 94? Any blatant course grades below an A-?

Life is a confusing place. Welcome to the club. :-)

P.S. PM me your email address. I can’t stand the CC messaging system.

No… I only had to take two regents exams last year since I took all of them pretty early, and I got a 100 on both of them (100 on the US History Regents and 100 on the English Regents).
And my lowest grade by far was a 90 in AP Calc BC for junior year.
The next lowest was around a 95 or so.
I would say my junior year grades were some of my best… freshman was the worst, sophomore was much better, and junior was even better.
The lowest quarter average I had for the four years was a 94 first quarter freshman year, and that was the only quarter it went that low.

Sure, do you want me to send you the essays over email?
