[] Summer Activities: (see above)
[] Essays: On the Common App I wrote about an epiphany experience while visiting a cemetery. Very life changing indeed! haha~
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both were from art teachers. One is one I’ve known for several years, and the other taught me at a college. I’m guessing their recommendations were excellent since I see no other reason why I got into CALS based on my SATS and extracurriculars.
[] Counselor Rec: I guess it was good…
[] Additional Rec: none.
[] Interview: none.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My outstanding uniqueness…?
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars, SATS.
[] Why you think you were accepted: Must have been my portfolio, or recommendations, or my essay. I was sure they’d reject me because of my lack of extracurriculars and horrible SAT scores.
[li] Where else were you accepted:[/ul] UMASS Amherst, SUNY ESF, SUNY Delhi, Le Moyne, Siena, University at Buffalo. No rejections/waitlisted[/li]General Comments: I seriously cannot believe I got accepted! I literally imploded when I saw my acceptance online last Thursday. Cornell has been my dream school for a long time now. My advice to future Cornell applicants: absolutely do not go by my stats for they are amazingly horrible. I mean, look at those SAT scores! I was sure I’d get rejected. But by some miracle I had gotten accepted. Don’t give up on your dreams, kids!

Does anyone know when NetIDs are sent out?

Correction: I did have an alum interview for Cornell. Completely forgot about it - I’ve been on so many since then! It went pretty well. My interviewer was very nice. It was more informative than inquisitive, a way for prospective students to learn more about the school.

[] Strengths: Rank, GPA, Awards
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores, trying to stand out enough on essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my SAT scores were a tad too low for an Asian male. Maybe my senior course load could have been more rigorous? I am not really sure where to pin point. It was probably my SAT scores

General Comments:

I was accepted in early march via rolling decision. It was really shocking seeing how low my stats are. I guess my application was able to show my passion for hospitality. Either way it goes to show that anything can happen! I really want to attend but my financial aid package wasn’t too good so now I’m not sure. Congrats to everyone!

Hello guys, just wanted to say congrats to you and i’ll be looking forward to meeting you next fall!!! I believe you will enjoy cornell as much as the rest of cornellians do.
if anything you need to know about cornell, just hit me up.

Decision: Accepted - Human Ecology

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): (one sitting) 2260 CR 720 M 750 WR 790 ESSAY 11
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: Spanish/Listening 720 Math IIC 710
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.33/5.0 … dunno what it is unweighted
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10%… 26/335
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Language & Composition (5) US History (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus AB, AP Literature & Composition, AP US Government & Politics, AP Spanish, AP Biology
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Girl Scouts Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, Edward J. Bloustein Scholar Award (NJ students), Debate League Speaker/Team Awards, Field Hockey Award (Second Team All league), NJ Science League recognition
[/ul]
Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate Team (JV/Varsity co-captain), Model UN (Webmaster), Girl Scouts, National Honor Society, Class Officer (Treasurer Sophomore/Junior years), Varsity Field hockey (Played Jr/sr year, varsity both years), Tae Kwon Do (second degree black belt)
[] Job/Work Experience: Waitress at a cafe for one summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: Girl Scouts (includes volunteering at a nature center, hospital, and all projects created to earn the awards… adds up to 300+ hours), Habitat for Humanity
[] Summer Activities: field hockey pre-season, tae kwon do, Girl Scouts, and normal summer stuff
[] Essays: it was a bit metaphorical - I wrote about sleep away camp - camping outside on a tiny island in the middle of a lake staring at the stars and getting my feet wet… sort of a reminscing-type of essay… the structure was also not in a typical essay format - tried to show personality, quirk
[] Teacher Recommendation: as much as I like my teachers, the recommendations were very generic so they probably were not large considering factors - they just wrote about my grade in the class, extracurriculars, future plans
[] Counselor Rec: I’ve had 3 different counselors… 2 during senior year - my guidance counselor wrote mine June of Junior year before she went on maternity leave so I never read it but I’m guessing it was just generic
[] Interview: never scheduled one but Cornell e-mailed me to have an information session with an alumnae
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: competitive public/suburbs - about 1,300 students
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: middle class - about 100k but with tax deductions it really isn’t as large as it seems trust me
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] I am a first generation college student but I don’t really think it was much of a hook
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Commonapp essay, supplement essay, SAT/AP, extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: Transcript (I’ve only taken honors/APs throughout HS, but my grades were mostly Bs so no sign of significant improvement, grades & GPA remained mostly constant)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my writing and standardized test scores made up for my transcript. HumEc also generally has a smaller applicant pool, so that might have been a factor. Some of my extracurriculars may have helped, like Girl Scouts, because not many girls maintain it into high school (only about 5% of Girl Scouts are high school students!). I also showed long term commitment to a lot of activities.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] William & Mary (accepted), Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy (accepted), College of New jersey (accepted), Northeastern (accepted), College of Saint Elizabeth (accepted), Wellesley (waitlisted), Wesleyan in CT (waitlisted), Vassar (rejected)
General Comments: To be honest, I didn’t even consider applying because of the competition, and I felt like my parents were hyping up the school because of the name/asian parent-ness/ etc. But Cornell is actually costing me less than William & Mary (my top choice after being rejected from Vassar), and I feel like this school has everything we’d need as undergrads. The essays DO make a difference! Especially the supplement ones - do research on the individual college before writing so you don’t sound generic… Looking back I probably should have procrastinated less (took SATs in December 09) But overall, things worked out. See you guys in august :)

This whole college process is so unpredictable… i got into my reaches and waitlisted at my targets - congrats to everyone who’s done with it, and good luck to those applying next year !

SAT: 1930, CR 680, M 610, WR 640, Essay 8
ACT: N/A
SAT II: Biology 630, Literature 670
GPA: 4.0
Rank: 1/304
AP: AP US History (4), AP Literature and Composition, AP Gov’t
Senior Year Course Load: Weights I, AP English, Biotechnology, Leadership, AP Government, Floriculture, TA, Anatomy and Physiology, Sociology

Extracurriculars: FFA (Chapter president), Cross country(varsity captain)
Job: Feed store sales associate junior year, pet sitter
Community service: various FFA events, Big Brothers Big Sisters
Essays: One about my passion for learning including how my elementary education was self-taught. The other about my love of animals
Recommendations: I am assuming that they were generic

State: Washington State
School Type: Average public school with 1200 students
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income bracket: Lower middle class
Hook: Passion for learning and my major?

Strengths: Success in my school, unique essays, focus of extracurriculars
Weaknesses: SAT scores, course load, community service, successes
Why I think I was accepted: I was totally surprised that I got in but I believe that it was my determination as shown in my essays as well as my obvious passion for animals
Where else did you apply: UC Davis (accepted), TAMU (accepted), WSU (accepted), CSU (accepted).

General comments: If you want to go to Cornell, do not get discouraged by the scores and essays of people who have been accepted. Do your absolute best in school and don’t change yourself to be what you think Cornell wants. It seems that they want sincerity and individuality. Apply no matter how bleak your chances of getting in. And don’t let the estimated cost discourage you either. It was actually cheaper for me to go to Cornell than an in-state public school.

Is there a thread like this for Early Decision applicants?

Yup, the thread for ED applicants is at:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/821243-official-cornell-ed-class-2014-decisions-thread.html

Djokovic!! i cannot believe you were waitlisted from Cornell (Harvard and the like, of course; you never know what to expect). but cornell is the “easiest” Ivy, you should have been accepted? why weren’t you?

Imrappa92: I just have to say that after looking through these forums and seeing the competition I’m up against it was such a boost of morale to see that someone who has comendable, but not spectacular grades, was accepted to Cornell. My grades and test scores are similar to yours, and your post has really inspired me to not get too discouraged. Thanks

this thread is really inspiring for people like me whose SAT’s result is disaster. Thanks for posting it

is the GPA (unweighted, out of 4.0) the H.S. cumulative GPA?
