[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate Team (JV/Varsity co-captain), Model UN (Webmaster), Girl Scouts, National Honor Society, Class Officer (Treasurer Sophomore/Junior years), Varsity Field hockey (Played Jr/sr year, varsity both years), Tae Kwon Do (second degree black belt)

[] Summer Activities: field hockey pre-season, tae kwon do, Girl Scouts, and normal summer stuff
[] Essays: it was a bit metaphorical - I wrote about sleep away camp - camping outside on a tiny island in the middle of a lake staring at the stars and getting my feet wet… sort of a reminscing-type of essay… the structure was also not in a typical essay format - tried to show personality, quirk
[] Teacher Recommendation: as much as I like my teachers, the recommendations were very generic so they probably were not large considering factors - they just wrote about my grade in the class, extracurriculars, future plans
[] Counselor Rec: I’ve had 3 different counselors… 2 during senior year - my guidance counselor wrote mine June of Junior year before she went on maternity leave so I never read it but I’m guessing it was just generic
[] Interview: never scheduled one but Cornell e-mailed me to have an information session with an alumnae
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: competitive public/suburbs - about 1,300 students
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: middle class - about 100k but with tax deductions it really isn’t as large as it seems trust me
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] I am a first generation college student but I don’t really think it was much of a hook
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Commonapp essay, supplement essay, SAT/AP, extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: Transcript (I’ve only taken honors/APs throughout HS, but my grades were mostly Bs so no sign of significant improvement, grades & GPA remained mostly constant)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my writing and standardized test scores made up for my transcript. HumEc also generally has a smaller applicant pool, so that might have been a factor. Some of my extracurriculars may have helped, like Girl Scouts, because not many girls maintain it into high school (only about 5% of Girl Scouts are high school students!). I also showed long term commitment to a lot of activities.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] William & Mary (accepted), Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy (accepted), College of New jersey (accepted), Northeastern (accepted), College of Saint Elizabeth (accepted), Wellesley (waitlisted), Wesleyan in CT (waitlisted), Vassar (rejected)
General Comments: To be honest, I didn’t even consider applying because of the competition, and I felt like my parents were hyping up the school because of the name/asian parent-ness/ etc. But Cornell is actually costing me less than William & Mary (my top choice after being rejected from Vassar), and I feel like this school has everything we’d need as undergrads. The essays DO make a difference! Especially the supplement ones - do research on the individual college before writing so you don’t sound generic… Looking back I probably should have procrastinated less (took SATs in December 09) But overall, things worked out. See you guys in august :)

This whole college process is so unpredictable… i got into my reaches and waitlisted at my targets - congrats to everyone who’s done with it, and good luck to those applying next year !
