Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

-Very Recent: writer for the Huffington Post Teen
-Editor-in-chief of school newspaper
-Contributor to my town’s newspaper (I write articles about college, SATs, and education)
-Multi Published writer in literary magazines (an essay about track and field, an essay about cosmetics & chemicals)
-College Essay was published in a magazine
-Have my own travel blog (features photos and entries on my trips abroad)
-Have my own healthy eating blog
-Quiz Bowl Team Captain

Job/Work Experience:
-Cashier at movie theater

Volunteer/Community service: I did not even list any on the Common App because it doesn’t help you get into elite schools. But I believe my recommendation writers spoke about the children’s museum that I volunteered at for two years. That was a huge commitment.
Summer Activities: Cashier at movie theater (Admissions officers love jobs and so do I)

Essays:
Common App – I chose the “place of solace” topic. My college essay was simple, yet beautiful, authentic, and richly detailed. It is all about my love of going to the library, and by far, it is the best piece of work I have ever written. I think that it is an honest portrayal of who I am, and it exemplifies my love of learning. I had this essay published in a national literary magazine. Please PM me if you’d like to read it.
Cornell Essay – I was a primary choice applicant to the College of Arts and Sciences, and for that essay, I talked about my passion for the French language and culture. I also mentioned that I liked to read world literature
Teacher Recommendation:
One from my French teacher (10/10) - I am a heavy participant in this class and I have been the top student for 4 years. I tutor, I share French literature that I read in my spare time with my teacher, I do research for the class, and I’ve taught a little.
AP US History Teacher (9/10) - I was the top student in this class and I won an award for my efforts. I adore history and I am also very concerned about social issues. He told me that I had the best projects and essays in the class.
Counselor Rec:
I’d give it a 9/10. We are close friends. In the summertime, my school made us fill out a sheet of all our hobbies, favorite media, and accomplishments - so I guess that helped too.

Additional Rec:
-Believe it or not, I submitted two family recommendations. They were each necessary, in my eyes. One was from my best friend in the world, coworker, peer, and cousin. We are extremely close, and she wrote me a 5-page recommendation letter which talked about my writing and my compassion for the environment.
-My second family letter was from my Aunt, who I love very much. She talked about my love for films and documentaries, my personality, my writing, and my healthy eating habits.

Interview: It was more of an informations session for Cornell, less of an interview. Pointless if you ask me.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: French Language, minor in Nutrition or Food Science
State (if domestic applicant): New York
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $40,000, single parent home
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: My writing and journalism, my grades and scores, my essay for sure, URM status too, choice of major
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I made sure to highlight the fact that I am a published writer. I also think it’s different that I want to study French and Nutrition. Make sure your Common App essay defined who you are.
Weaknesses: SAT Math score is on the lower end, but to be honest, I’m proud of it. That’s the best I could achieve. I also did poorly on SAT Chemistry (570) - but that obviously didn’t matter and that’s not a strong point.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have a singular passion for writing and I want to major in something atypical
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My essay about my love of the library and my French essay.

I’m ecstatic! Congratulations to all who were admitted. I applied to all 8 Ivy League schools and Cornell is the first to admit me. I would really like to attend Columbia University or UPenn, however. I also applied to NYU, Fordham University, and then SUNY schools and Siena Colleges as safeties. We will see what happens, but I am happy to have Cornell as a fallback if the other Ivies don’t work out.

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:

I am still pretty much shaking. I consider this as a blessing especially because one, I am international and two, well I did not consider my application to be competitive enough due to my test scores and the not so strong ECs. But I decided to try.

What I’ve learnt is you will never know unless you try. I remember submitting the first part of my application and then wondering if I should bother with the second part. If I hadn’t been pushed by my brothers I probably wouldn’t be on this forum.

All the best guys

Reflection:
Surprised to have received early notice, but excited! Unsure of whether or not I will attend based on financials and mediocre interest levels

Strengths: Scores, grades, gender(?)
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:
Weaknesses: CR score, lack of major internships and awards
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Great essays and great scores!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Haven’t heard back from most yet
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: No clue!!!

Congrats to those who have heard! And to those who haven’t or to future applicants—don’t stress it’ll all work out on it’s own. College acceptances aren’t everything. Just be yourself in your application and DO NOT let your parents and teachers edit over your voice. I wrote mine about rap music and engineering because it was me, and I think that showed through. My grades and test scores certainly helped though. Might see some of you in the future!

Strengths: Academics, test scores, essays, recs, focused ECs
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Violin? Also I kind of pushed the women-in-STEM angle in my engineering essay

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Honestly have no idea. I’m probably the only kid whose main inspiration for their career path is a character from Stargate SG-1, so there’s that?

For my Why Cornell essay, I wrote about my passion for international affairs and languages and the specific programs/opportunities Cornell offers that I was interested in.

Teacher Recommendation: I asked my AP Comp/AP US History teacher and my English 3 Honors teacher. Both of them really like me (and the English teacher is the NHS moderator) so I think they wrote good recs.
Counselor Rec: I think it was fine. She knows me pretty well and says I’m among the top of my class. She also told me I had the hardest course load of anyone else in the Senior class.
Additional Rec:
Interview: It was pretty good. I mostly asked the questions. It was a conversation, I wouldn’t say it was positive or negative. We talked about Cornell life and what I hoped to accomplish there.

Strengths: Common App Essay, Letters of Rec, ECs,
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I really wanted to focus on my passion for languages and international affairs. I wanted to show Cornell what I would do with my education there so in my essays, I talked about what I would do at Cornell instead of what I’ve already accomplished.

Weaknesses: Low test scores (compared to College Confidential standards), I didn’t accomplish anything super big.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly couldn’t tell you, and that’s probably not helpful for any hopeful candidates looking at this! I would say I focused on what Cornell would let me do instead of what I’ve already done. I also talked as if I was an already accepted candidate (I used words like, “When” and “I will” and avoided “if”).

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
I was accepted to FSU and UF, and well, CORNELL!
I was deferred from Yale SCEA.
I’m still waiting on Brown, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Dartmouth, and UPenn.

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:
I would say the most unique thing in my application was my job experience.

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I think my essays were what I had going for me. I used an excerpt from a great poem my english teacher had shown me a couple days prior as an example of what kinds of things intrigue me intellectually. I also tied in what about science excites me… considering I’m an intended science major.

Congratulations to everyone who has already earned admission! Best of luck to everyone who has not. I’m certain the college experience can be whatever one makes it out to be, regardless of where it takes place.

Strengths:My grades, essays, and letters of recommendation, portfolio
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried to demonstrate that my extracurricular activities show the passions I spoke about on my essays, and how I have succeeded throughout high school when the first weeks of 9th grade I couldn’t speak English at all.
Weaknesses: TEST SCORES D:
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my application really displayed my passion for architecture and how I want to design sustainable spaces, and even though most of my test scores were lower than the average, they could see my interest in architecture, dedication, and how I want to contribute to make a better place.
This is sort of advice for everyone who is very passionate about a field, I applied to only the AAP for architecture because that’s my biggest passion. If there is something that interests you a lot and you can’t imagine yourself not doing it, you should really apply to only that school c:
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: UT Austin, Drury University, Rensselaer PI, Washington University in Saint Louis. I still need to hear from other schools.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:The fact that I arrived from Mexico 3.5 years ago, and today, I’m one of the top students at a very competitive school in the DFW.

Congratulations to everyone who got in c:!!!
I initially had applied for ED but I was deferred and thought I didn’t have any chances of getting accepted through RD. If you don’t get accepted I know how it feels, and everything will work out fine for you. The fact that one applied to Cornell shows how brave we can be! Happy day!
