Super happy...but a calm happy. Don't know much about the school and applied on a whim (considering the ease of the UC app), but I'm looking forward to sitting down and learning more about UCD and other schools once April comes around and I have all my decisions :)

just a quick question...is UCD generally easier to get into than UCI?

Accepted--Undeclared Life Science Major

GPA: 4.2
ACT: 33
SAT II: Math II (740), Biology M (720)
E.C.: Band, Choir, and Drama ect.

@symphony

Generally, yes as we have seen in past years, UCI has been more selective than UCD by a little bit (not too much though).

Accepted :)

GPA W: 4.1
ACT: 27

To answer the question above if UCI is easier to get into than UCD... Basically they are just different. UCI is more number based as you can see from their stats of admittied freshmen. If you go the numbers... you are more likely to get in. Davis, on the other hand, focuses more on a wholistic view by seeing the ECs and essays especially since this year was far more compeititive.

Go to the rejections thread to see how numbers arent always the best to rely on for getting in.

I'm not sure if that is true. I have many people at my school with 3.8+ gpas and 2000+ sats w/ good essays + good ec's and got rejected from davis today, however there are many people at my school with low gpa decent/high sat great essays/great ec's and have gotten into irvine already.

Perhaps Davis is looking less at straight numbers and even more towards enrolling interesting students with leadership and EC's that show accomplishment. Everyone enjoys a lively campus with a vareity of energetic students. Students who sit in their dorm room and study don't contribute to the campus environment.

Here is how it appears that the system works.

UCD does not evaluate holistically, nor does it read the essay except to look for specific categories to which they assign points. They have a formula that produces a single point score and admission to each major/school is determined by a cutoff they calculate each year to yield the desired number of admits.

The formula involves 8500 possible points for stats (with a minimally qualifying student - non-ELC, 3.0, 1420/2400 SAT etc - having about 5450 of those just by qualifying). The total of possible points runs to over 14,000 with assignments for various attributes or categories:

ELC
Classes beyond 35 minimum a-g
High stats while attending a low performing school
Low Income
Academic prep program participation
First generation to college
Nontraditional e.g. home schooled
Veteran
Leadership
Special achievement/talent
Special challenges in life
Significant 9-11 grades improvement
Disability

Nothing for the ECs unless it happens to align with those categories.
Nothing for community service.
Nothing for brilliant writing on the essay.
Nothing to either prefer URMs or bias against others

With the huge effect of more than 5,700 points for categories outside of stats, you can understand how a stats oriented view appears pretty random.

Except for Cal and UCLA, the other UCs have their own strict formulae for admissions, but each has their own factors. These vary a lot from school to school, which means that you get unusual patterns of acceptance and rejection.

Daughter accepted to Davis. We will be taking a tour after spring break. I have never visited. It looks like a very nice campus from the photos. I guess I had better start looking at flight info.

Adultparentmom! - I'm glad that you will be visiting our campus for the first time. The information found at Sacramento International Airport - Davis Wiki might be helpful especially the "Transportation To and From" section near the bottom of the page which gives information regarding the shuttle services available between Sacramento International Airport and Davis. I hope you enjoy your trip.

My D was accepted as well (2040/4.1 UC GPA animal biology). We loved our visit at scholars day, and it would be great if she could know about the scholars program BEFORE she had to accept, and if it was more than 20 minutes from home. Still, it's a contender, and my D got into Duke, and Santa Clara with a scholarship.

Some have implied or said Davis is "doing something (special)", perhaps with the point system. Any further insights on what makes this "special"?

Thank you UCD Admissions, that is very helpful.
