Harvard used the wait-list heavily LAST year when the economy was not quite gone to hell!

Harvard used the wait-list heavily LAST year when the economy was not quite gone to hell!

I'm sure it'll be surprisingly common at a ton of different schools.

S was rejected. 32 act, 4.0, 2/135, first AP scholar ever from our high school, self-motivated enough to take online HS courses not offered at our school including an AP class, very talented musician. But that is ok, Davidson was not a first choice, though he thought he’d get a good education there and liked Charlotte.

He got in his top choice, Emory University with scholarships. Probably a much better fit anyway since he’s been doing his own laundry for years now. Don’t know if I could stand him if he came home all spoiled & stuff. ;)

Congrats to those in and good luck to those waitlisted. Davidson is a good choice for a small liberal arts school. You all have bright futures ahead of you.

International Applicant.

Waitlisted.

Homeschool/ A Level’s Grades: ABB

SAT I 1470/2210

Great Recommendations, but need rather tremendous FA though.

Now, any idea how to get off the waitlist?

Yes: keep your place on the wait-list, enroll your second choice, but call your regional (the international) admissions officer at Davidson and express how much you really want to come to Davidson, and how you hope that when the time comes around to look at the wait-listed student, you would appreciate a second consideration.

Congratulations to those who were admitted and best wishes to those whose acceptances are or will be elsewhere.

As a parent I do want to make it clear that the “they do your laundry for you” point is way overemphasized. Many students do indeed take advantage of the laundry service–and many do not. There are also washing machines and dryers available for student use and I believe they are also operated without direct charge to students (that is, no coins or tokens needed). So while there are many reasons to choose a particular college, or, conversely, to feel it might not be the best fit for you or your family, who does the laundry at Davidson is not really the point, though the convenience of not having to buy tokens or hoard quarters for the machines is appealing.

Mattmom is right. Actually, HALF the students do their own laundry. I do my own laundry every now and then, but I give most of my clothes to the laundry service. They’ve only ever lost two garments of mine this whole year (a Davidson T-shirt, and a jean skirt). After almost a month, I just went to check the lost and found and voil

I have been mostly lurking over the past months, and even though my D did not get an acceptance (Davidson was not her first choice and she has other great options), I am pleased as punch that some of you (like TTWhite and Hookem, among others), that wanted that acceptance so much more than my D did received them!! CONGRATULATIONS and best wishes!!!

In the meantime, looks like I have to tell juniors at my HS that they had better consider ED for next year…

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Income Bracket: >150k (Not this year though, haha)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I thought my application was good enough overall, my SAT scores were pretty good along with my GPA and course load. I thought I held pretty significant leadership responsibilities.
[] Weaknesses: SAT Math Scores, Coming from a HS with 2 ED admits?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: At first I was shocked when I found out I was waitlisted, however now that I have seen the quality of other waitlisted applicants it seems the whole process is a bit unusual this year. It is honestly impossible for me to attempt to pinpoint one specific area of my application that would sway the admissions committee one way or the other, perhaps my SAT Math scores?
[/ul]General Comments: Davidson was my first choice, so I’m definitely disappointed I was not accepted. The most disheartening aspect of the decision is that I truly felt that Davidson was my dream school, and it is frustrating to know that they do not feel that I am a good fit. I hope that I was able to completely convey my love for the school in my essays, but overall I have no real regrets about my application. Some things just aren’t meant to be. I will definitely accept my spot on the waitlist, however I will probably be submitting my deposit to UNC (assuming Emory and Penn reject me :)) come May 1st. Congratulations to those who were accepted, I know you will have a great time at Davidson should you decide to accept your spots! (Feel free to decline though! Haha)

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2130 - 700 W/740 CR/690 M (ouchhh)
[] SAT II: 800 M-II, 760 US History, 690 Literature (ouch again…)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/76
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (5), APES (5), APLang (4), Psych (5), Calc AB (5)
[] Senior Year Course Load: 5 AP - Music, Lit, Euro, Bio, Stats, 2 Honors - Span 3 and 4
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NM Finalist, a few local music awards, a few writing ones.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Beta Club (President), Newspaper (Editor), LitMag (Editor & Consultant), Go Green (Coordinator), tutoring (founder & president), piano, choir (Student Director & Accompanist), lots of volunteer work… other stuff.
[] Job/Work Experience: restaurant work
[] Volunteer/Community service: lots and lots. Most devoted to weekly elementary tutoring.
[] Summer Activities: mortgage internship last summer, work and planning activities with friends 2 summers before
[] Essays: Kooky. Very specific one for “Why Davidson.”
[] Teacher Recommendation: Good. Both know me very well, almost like a co-worker to them. Except one teacher misspelled my name…
[] Counselor Rec: No idea. Good, I hope. She’s completely new and quite clueless, but she’s nice and wants the best for me.
[] Additional Rec: peer rec from a close friend who was previous Beta president and knows me well both in and out of school and extracurriculars.
[] Interview: never got one.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NC
[] School Type: trashy public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 70k-85k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I had fair scores, my “Why Davidson” essay may have been okay, and I’m pretty sure my peer recommendation did a thing or two for me =)
[] Weaknesses: My CommonApp essay is a little kooky…
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have a backing in arts, and interest in humanities seems to come through on my transcript. I’m also 45 minutes from the campus… [/li][/ul]General Comments: Davidson is an extremely nice school, with a wonderful atmosphere and personalized homey-ness. However, it is too close to home for me and I think I am set on being at a larger research university. Give me the crowds!
…therefore, my declination of the offer of admission should open up a spot for someone!
For those of us waitlisted or denied, please don’t be disheartened! Someone out there knows how to appreciate you if Davidson doesn’t!

WAITLISTED

Objective:

* SAT I (breakdown): 780 M, 800 CR, 780 W (2360)

Subjective:

* Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): academic team (president), model united nations, varsity tennis, varsity volleyball, spring musical, stuco, cultural society, science club, middle school mentoring, spanish club, and more. I can fly a Cessna-172 but I do not have my instrument rating yet.

Other

* State (if domestic applicant): TX

Reflection

* Strengths: My scores and GPA are excellent. I feel I am well rounded because I am an excellent student and have some major art awards, but then again, I think most Davidson kids are just as well rounded. I have been working for about three years now, sometimes holding two jobs at once. Flying is pretty neat.

General Comments: Getting in was harder than I thought. And I have a feeling attending will be much harder. I am not going to Davidson because I am accepted into a school with a better program for my major and I am not officially accepted to Davidson. But it is a grand school and I am sincerely excited for everybody who is attending next year. Congrats! (seriously)

^WOW

Davidson’s admissions was definitely bizarre this year, to say the least.

My good friend was just as well rounded but perhaps in a different way. She is a choreographer for a very large pageant, has received national science awards, and is currently valedictorian. Her scores are not as good, (but still good), and she is not national merit. Instead of art, she focuses on choir and the musical. Instead of tennis and volleyball, she is head cheerleader. Everything else is pretty much the same on paper and she is waitlisted.

Yes, the admissions decisions most certainly are interesting haha. I think the entire country might be this way. This year is ridiculous.

I think they tried to take people who they thought would attend. Student0913 you are the model student but you look like somebody who wants to attend HYPSM or something very close to that level.

I bet if we could see the stats, we would find the ED acceptances a lot more normal because they don’t have to worry about the student rejecting them.

Virginiafan: Two people from my school applied ED with stats very similar to mine posted above (one with higher rank/one with higher SATS), both were accepted.

True true. At the time I applied, I really wanted to go but recently I realized it just wouldn’t make sense. But of course they didn’t know that my interest technically dropped a little bit. I still love the school but I realized the other school would be better for my major, even though it is a lower caliber. But almost anything seems lower than Davidson now. Looking at everybody’s stats, I have a very high respect for Davidson kids. What is HYPSM?

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford

I’m not sure about the M, maybe MIT?

It’s amazing that someone like you didn’t get into Davidson, I would have figured you would have been a major contender for the Belk Scholarship.

ohhhh. Haha no I didn’t really apply to any of those. I think they may be too far north for me. Too cold haha. I applied to Washington and Lee and UVA, if that counts.

I half thought so too, but I have huge fan of a friend who may have convinced me it was likely. I was nominated for the Belk.

I’m starting to wonder why I was admitted. I almost feel like I should deny my spot and let someone probably more qualified in, seriously.

^NO, Don’t ever feel that way! haha

Everyone is admitted for a reason, and the admissions commitee only admits students who can succeed at Davidson.

You’ll have a great time at Davidson, and the rest of us will have a great time wherever life leads us! Don’t worry about anyone else, you’ve worked hard and deserve your acceptance.

Honestly if it was a large school it might be reasonable to think that way. But at a school like Davidson you shouldn’t. At Davidson they care about the kind of people they are admitting. They shape their class and know who they are admitting. They obviously thought you should be a piece of the class puzzle (bad analogy). And for the people that were denied, it more then likely wasn’t with academics. You just weren’t what they were looking for. Nothing good or bad about it. Just is. You can succeed anywhere with the right work ethic.
