Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): CR-600, M-590, W-630
ACT:
SAT II: Lit - 650 Math I - 600
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):3.45
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 7/60
Senior Year Course Load: Pretty tough, not as bad as Junior year though. More focused on communications related classes
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): FBLA Nationals: 2nd place in Video Production this past year! I haven’t really won any other national/huge awards

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Drama/theatre, Student Government, FBLA, Youth and Governement, NHS, etc.
Job/Work Experience: Tour Guide at an Amusement park, Some work w/ my dad’s Marketing business and website, babysitting
Volunteer/Community service: Fair amount, 200+

Essays: Pretty good. Seeing as I applied for Journalism, I’m not ashamed to say that I have a way with words
Teacher Recommendation: So lucky to have gotten GREAT recs! very personal and full of praise
Counselor Rec: fair – not too personal
Additional Rec:

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes. Got sucky, crappy aid. By some miracle I had a FASFA EFC of $0… yet nothing but federal pell grant/loans. Appealing first thing monday morning
Intended Major: Journalism… but may switch to comm/Public Relations
State (if domestic applicant): NH
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White as can be haha
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: My mom (whom I live with) has been unemployed for nearly a year, and made about $40,000 before
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
Strengths: Writing (in main and supplement essays) & teacher rec.
Weaknesses: SAT score… obviously
Why you think you were accepted: your guess is as good as mine haha
General Comments: I’m shocked I got into COM with my low SAT score… I thought I would get deferred to CGS!!! The only thing holding me back is the financial aid… which is obviousy a huge factor with my custodial parent being unemployed. My dad can pay $10,000 + the $11,000 in fed money (including stafford loans) won’t cut it. I knew my SAT score was bad… but I thought that was my only true flaw. I thought they’d at least give me SOMETHING w/ and EFC of $0.
If I don’t get at least $15,000 more in scholarships/grants, there’s no way I can do it. $50k for four years on loans? NO WAY

Why you think you were accepted: everything fit?
General Comments: Sooo if you’ve read all the way down here, I’d really like one of those “it doesnt matter where you go, but what you do while you’re there” speeches. I didn’t get into any of my match or reach schools. The only 4 schools I got into were bu, bc, wpi, and northeastern. Because I want to major in engineering, I can’t really go to bc. out of the remaining 3, bu seems like the best. I spent my whole life wanting to go to schools like mit or the ivies. I got rejected by 11 total. (8 ivies, stanford, mit, caltech). my supposed matches, cmu and jhu, i got rejected from as well. I understand that my stats may be subpar to what is needed for those schools, but I never thought I’d have to go to BU. No offense to any current BU students, but I would really love someone to convince me that BU is not a bad school at all and that I will have the same opportunities as those MIT kids across the street towards whom I will always be bitter. I feel so down…

I am sorry that you didn’t get in your dream schools. Unfortunately, stuff like this happens in life. It is a major disappointment, but now you must pick yourself up and move forward. It is what you do with the hand you are dealt that is important. From what you wrote, you should be grateful that you got into BU. By your own admission, you put forth little effort in your essays. If you read through these boards, you will see that many kids with stats like yours got rejected. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. Maybe BU is where you are meant to be, or maybe not.

Now if I were in your shoes, with a perspective of 35 additional years on this earth, I would email a couple of engineering professors and ask some specific questions. I would join the BU Class of 2015 Facebook page and message a couple of the engineering majors who have posted there offering to help kids who are trying to make a decision. I assume that you have visited BU, but if you are close enough, I would visit again. And as far as reputation, it seems like people from MA have a worse opinion of BU than people from other parts of the country. Maybe it is true that familiarity breeds contempt. But BU is a great school, with plenty of opportunies. Your education is what you make of it.

Best of luck to you!

My guess is that you will be one of the many BU students who complain about grade deflation because you feel that you “deserve” a higher GPA given that BU is not really a top school.
