official decision thread!im a happy man

but you would think they would have emailed me about the math IIc's! Most schools if they at all require the sat 2's say just that, any sat 2's and far more selective schools do not specifiy which math. I just wish they had made it clear from the start I would have withdrawn my application OR just scrambled to take the right test, that coupled with my out of state status sounds like it was downright impossible.

i took math 1c and only after the fact found that they require math 2, would this have hurt me? don't you think they would have sent me a letter to give me aheads up as a courtesy or are they just too damn big?

Too damnn big. Seriously. At a UC school you're on your own. No assigned advisor, you'll never see a counselor unless you make an appointment, etc. They put the info out there, its up to you go read thru it all and ask questions if there's something you don't understand. Same holds for career counseling, activities, and so on. To be happy/succeed at a UC you need to be 100% in charge; expecting them to watch out for you is a misconception.

And to be honest I'm wondering why you wanted to go to ucsb out of state. The UCs are a sweet deal for CA residents, but for the price you'll pay as an non-CA student you could go to any school in the country, so you could find one where you'll have small classes, advising, personal attention, and so on.

The UC admission requirements are posted on their website.

From their website:
Step 2: Examination Requirement

All students applying for fall 2006 or later must submit the following test scores:

<a href="http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/SelectionProcess.asp?section=selectionprocess&subsection=eligibility&selectiontype=prospective_freshman%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/SelectionProcess.asp?section=selectionprocess&subsection=eligibility&selectiontype=prospective_freshman</a>

The SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment plus Writing.
The critical reading, writing and mathematics scores on the SAT must be from the same sitting. If you take the ACT, you must report your composite score.

Two SAT Subject Tests.
These must be in two different areas, chosen from the following: English literature, history and social studies, mathematics (Level 2 only), science or language other than English.
Note: Freshman applicants who graduated from high school in spring 2005 or earlier are required to have taken the SAT I (or ACT) and three SAT II: Subject Tests prior to high school graduation.

Oh well, what can I do? This was frankly more of a last minute thing, we have family in CA. and I love it out there so I figured what the heck, I didn;t even think to see what the SAT 2 requirements are, they are not as top rated as many of the other schools I applied to and their average SAT's are lower than many of the others so I never thought to look that it was only MATH IIC, whatever its over. I also applied to Uof San Diego and Occidental, any thoughts on either of those. I got into U. of San Francisco, but I don't think its so great of a school, right?

kellyconn -- if you have 2 SAT II's other than math, then you don't need the math II C -- it is not required. You didn't get in because you are out of state. Do you know that according to published stats, the average GPA for admitted students at UCSB is 3.99? (Obviously, that is a weighted GPA- but it gives you an idea of what you were up against).

My daughter is in as an ELC (meaning top 4% at her high school); she received an invitation for the UCSB reception for "high performing students" -- I think her GPA is about 4.2, but I'm not sure because the UC's recalculate it so it wouldn't be the same as what is on her transcript in any case. She has sucky SAT II scores -- in fact she submitted ACTs to all the private schools she applied to just to avoid them ever seeing the SAT II scores. Definitely no Math IIC at all - her highest Math SAT I score is 590, so there certainly would not be a point attempting Math IIC.

Anyway, it was a mistake for you to rely on reports of average test scores to evaluate your chances for UCSB - or any other UC campus. GPA is really what counts, because the UC system is set up so that it is supposed to accept only the top 12% of Calif. high school grads -- if you are coming from out of state they are going to want to see a GPA that they think would put you at the top. The lower reported test scores for the California system reflects demographics rather than ability -- i.e., more California students are coming from demographic groups that statistically tend to do worse on the SAT.

i believe i have the lowest stats on this thread!

Accepted!! Computer Engineering!!
29 ACT
4.08 HS Cum
4.16 UC GPA
3.87 UW HS Cum

ln 17: being ELC (top 4%) does not guarantee admission to ALL UC campuses... it merely guarantees admission to at least one.

hi calmom, yea i know that from the get go being out of state makes it nearly impossible, they take like 4% but my sat's were pretty good, and my math 1c was a 690 and literature 610 and my others were like 1910 combined, far above their above norms, whatever i am not sweating it, this was a long shot and not necessarily my first choice but for Ca. it was one of my top pics, now i wait on occidental and u. of san diego then decided between east coast, west coast or indiana or michigan!!!!

Did you look at the chart on the Pathways site to see what your SATs have to be in combination with GPA? Here:
<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html</a></p>

It says that an out-of-stater with a GPA under 3.4 is not eligible.

I found another post of yours where you said that your school doesn't give GPA's but that you are a strong B+ student. I don't know what that means. You would have to recalculate your GPA by UC standards in any case. But the point is that if you had less than a 3.4 it wouldn't matter what your test scores are -- and of course as an out of state applicant it was an uphill battle in any case.

I'm sure you'll have better luck with Occidental and U. of San Diego - for one thing, as they are private schools, it doesn't count against you that you are out of state. On the contrary, you will have "geographic diversity" working in your favor.

I agree with the previous poster who said that Santa Barbare is an incredible bargain for those of us paying in-state tuition, but I'm not sure that its worth attending if you are paying out of state tuition. There just have been so many funding cuts to all the UC's and of course it affects the campuses. So basically it's a great school, but all UC's are getting to be like flying no-frills on a discount airline -- they will get you where you are going, but without some of the perks and comforts that you get when flying first-class (or paying for private education).

yes i agree with you about it being an amazing bargain for you Californians! But not so much for an out of stater, that said though I would still have considered going, although I don't know how to figure out a GPA, have been in private school since Kindergarten, I have about a 88 average across the board, maybe closer to a 90. I come from a very competitive school as well. Hopefully I will get into occidental or u. of san diego, how do they in your humble opinion compare to the big state schools?

Okay- I didn't get into UCSB, but I got into UCSD. What??? Know I don't know if I should attend Santa Clara University or UCSD.

ACCEPTED!!!! YES!!!!! UCSB is my first choice.
