Official Decisions Roster

I think Medill is more difficult to gdt into because there are less spots open for students, however "student profile" tends to be quite similar.

its a little tougher to get in to, with respect to the fact that if you havent been involved in your schools media stuff, fuhgettaboutit, but you still would have a shot at CAS. The involvement statistics at medill are what make teh difference. That and its much more selective, and is by far NU's most famous college.

Decision: Accepted to Weinburg College of Arts and Sciences, rejected from music dual degree program

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1480
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math 2C, 800 Chemistry, 770 Writing, 770 Math 1C
[] GPA: 4.60 Weighted, 3.86 unweighted
[] Rank: 17/402
[] Other stats: APs: 5 on US History, Chemistry, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Physics C E/M & Mechanics, Music Theory; 4 on Government
1st chair MD Allstate Orchestra, 3rd chair All-Eastern orchestra; math/science clubs at school
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My "Why Northwestern" essay was kind of generic. My long essay was alright, I guess (I did the crisis question). My short answers were not particularly witty.
[] Teacher Recs: I'd say pretty good, but both were from science/math fields - a calculus teacher and a chemistry teacher
[] Counselor Rec: I go to a public school, and with four counselors serving 402 students, I have no idea.
[] Hook (if any): I'm not sure what this is
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MD
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: Well, I would consider music my main strength, but apparently it wasn't enough to get me into the dual program. However, there is a possible reason for my rejection, which I have posted below
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I was confused by the application process for the music school. I thought they assigned an audition time to you when in fact you had to schedule one by yourself. As a result, in mid-February, when the audition deadline had long passed, they sent me a letter informing me that if I still wanted to be considered, I would have to send in a tape within the next 7 days or they would close my file. I had not made a tape before as my other auditions were all live, so I frantically contacted someone who could make a recording of me. I sent in the recording postmarked on the deadline day, and for all I know, they might have already filled up their slots and simply have thrown my tape away.
[/li]

As for why I was accepted into Weinburg, I don't know, maybe the admissions officer was in a particularly good mood, because I think I look like any other typical Asian male student: fairly smart, good at science and math, play a musical instrument
[/ul]Other Factors: dunno

Decision: Waitlisted
Applied as a bio major

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought they were personal and revealed myself well.
[] Teacher Recs: 2 recs: I don't know, but I assume they were good.
[] Counselor Rec: Again, unsure, but my counsler and I are close.
[] Hook (if any): Varsity Athlete (Cross Country, Chess, and Track); did research at University of Chicago and another project at Northwestern; 250+ hours community service; other activities and extracurriculars not as important to me

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: IL
[] School Type: Public (it is a math and science school)
[] Ethnicity: Indian (Asian)
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness:
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Well, my SAT II scores aren't exactly spectacular, but I also didn't have time to study for those tests. My gpa is also low. Other than that I'm not exactly sure, just more qualified applicants?

[/ul]Other Factors:

The doctor I work under at NW wrote me an amazing rec. I also co-authored a medical paper that will be published (from NW).

Decision:Accepted

[] major strength/weakness: ?
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: My verbal scores were on the low side, but since I applied to McCormick maybe math and science is weighted more heavily.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:

Thought I would note that Northwestern is my first choice and I can't wait to meet everyone...College is going to be awesome!

Decision: Accepted weinberg

Stats:
SAT: 1510
SAT IIs: 640 Math 2C, 800 writing, 620 world history
GPA: no gpa
Rank: 1/400
Other stats: top percentile in region / surrounding countries in english and science competitions.
Subjective:
Essays: My "Why Northwestern" essay was kind of generic. My long essay was cliche. One of my short answers was good. Can't remember the other two.
Teacher Recs: Will do.
Counselor Rec: Good. Also got an extra recc from Rotary club (local) - that one was spectacular.
Hook (if any): I'm not sure what this is
Location/Person:
State or Country: asia
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: female
major strength/weakness: leadership positions - many of them?
why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I have no idea, friends with better stats than me were waitlisted.
Other Factors: -

lefay if you dont mind me asking, how the hell did you get a 1510 on the SAT but only a 640 in 2c?

I can't speak for lefay, but 2c requires more math skills than SAT I math.

But its just regular Alegbra 2.. which i'd think everyone would have covered anyway...

True, but sometimes you'd be surprised at the number of people who do well on sat i math, but don't do as well on math 2c.

SAT I math requires reasoning and logic, SAT II math requires knowledge mostly, there aren't questions designed to trick you.

Huh? Thought math2c covers pre-cal also. Did they change the test? Now I realize I am getting old. LOL!

and to get 640 you need to miss half the questions on the test. The test is not that HARD

... for you, me, and most people, it might not be hard, but it is obviously difficult for some people. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, so who cares if someone gets a 640, big deal.

Decision: Rejected

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:1510 ; 800 M/710 V
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math II/800 Writing/790 Chemistry
[] GPA: 4.0/4.0 Unweighted
[] Rank: 6/574
[li] Other stats: [/li]-RSI Scholar
-top 3 in Univeristy Interscholastic League (UIL) in Mathematics since 6th grade at both District/State levels
-Intel Semifinalist
-Various state level awards in piano
-National Merit Finalist
-300 Hours in community service at our local soup kitchen
-Spent majority of summer doing research work at the University of Texas at Austin Chemical Engineering Department (I guess this goes hand in hand with Intel, as aforementioned).
-President of NHS; President of Mu Alpha Theta; Vice President of chess club. For NHS I took it upon my own responsibility to seek out and work collaboratively with other local organizations to help solve the homeless problem in our area. I thought this was semi-unique because it showed leadership.

-I took 11 AP classes throughout my high school career, and I received 5s on all the AP tests I have taken so far.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I gave it my all in these. I really thought it reflected my natural intellectual curiosity and motivation in academics, a quality that I thought
Northwestern was looking for.
[] Teacher Recs: Very good. Calculus teacher regarded me as "the best student in [her] career."
[] Counselor Rec: Astounding.
[] Hook (if any): None
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Texas
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Indian to be specific)
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: Science is my strength.
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: Weak SAT score; poor rank; not Intel finalist. I was not the type of student Northwestern was looking for.
[/ul]Other Factors:
Congradulations to everyone who made it. You all truly deserved it. Best wishes to you all.

holy shiat dmvp. how on earth did you not get accepted? dont be hard on yourself, its absolutely ridiculous that they turned you down.

meh, it happens. the thing that sort of makes me mad is the fact that I got rejected from every college I applied to except for one, and that one I was accepted because of some law (top 10% guaranteed admission).

got rejected from northwestern, yale, harvard, mit, rice, and I only got into University of Texas @ Austin, which is great since I live there so it will be very convenient for me, but I didn't really want to go there.

i know there are colleges out there where i could get into...i just didn't apply to them i suppose.

last admissions decision i'm waiting on is stanford; i'll get that tomorrow, but yea my hopes are not too up on that one. my philosophy - you get rejected from one elite school, you get rejected from 'em all.

but in the end, the decisions don't affect me too much, really. I did all the things I did because I enjoyed doing them, not to merely embellish college applications. If anything, I came out out of high school with good experience that I would do all over again even if I knew final college admissions outcome :)

I agree. Those "weaknesses" you mentioned, they are not weaknesses at all!! and your stats, science-wise, are amazing! Poor rank...you were probably just #6 because you were tied with 5 other people or something! I can't help but think that there must have been something funny or weird in all your applications that would get you rejected from almost all your schools. Especially Rice, I can't see how you would get rejected from Rice. One thing that does strike me as odd is that your GPA is 4.0 unweighted AND weighted. Does your school weight AP classes with +1 GPA point? If not that's weird. My condolences...even without a unique "hook" your research experience, math skills, and Intel semifinalist should have been enough to get you in.

I agree that its Northwestern's loss dmVP29, but there are a couple of girls here at my school who would die to go to UT-Austin. Good luck with everything!

heh well regarding the GPA I guess I was a bit redundant. When I said 4.0/4.0 I meant "4.0 out of 4.0". Kind of like saying if I aced a test i got 100%/100%. Our unweighted GPA is on a 9 point scale. AP classes give you a "9" for 95-100, "8" for 90-95, etc. regular classes give you a "7" for a 95-100, "6" for 90-100, etc. My unweighted gpa was an 8.65.

My friend who is #5 in our class and has superb stats also got rejected from Rice. Yet, this one slacker (top 30%) in our school was accepted. I have no idea how that happened.

I was talking with my parents and the more I talk with them the more I realize that UT is actually an excellent choice for me. It has a very nurturing undergraduate experience that I will love, and it is a very strong school in the sciences too.

I'm glad I'm going to go there!

Some people told me I had little to no "non-academic" extracirricular activities, and that's what led to the rejections. Something like sports/heavy involvment in perhaps another instrument rather than just the piano. Eh oh well, I'm happy with my decision to go to UT now :)

heh speaking of girls, UT is unofficially ranked #1 for beautiful women, so that's a definite plus! I forgot the source of the ranking though.
