Official Decisions Roster

dmvp, your stats look amazing. I agree, UT is a great school, and besides.. with your kind of academic motivation, you'll probably succeed no matter where you end up! good luck w/ stanford.

Decision: Rejected (I actually want to post this)

Stats:

* SAT:didn't take
* SAT IIs: didn't take
*ACT: 28 (which is my weak spot - I'm actually kind of disappointed myself in the score, but it would have been a huge hassle to take it again since I needed extended time and had to reapply for it each time that the test was taken)
* GPA: 3.9643 UW on a 4.0 UW scale
* Rank: 19 out of 246 (at my home school but also attend two high schools with one being a math and science center which means more difficult classes)
* Other stats:
- volunteered every other weekend at a Ronald McDonald House during junior and senior years
- volunteered for significant amount of time at the Humane Society during freshman and sophomore years
- was on the basketball team during freshman year (didn't exactly work out for the other three years)
- writing club member during junior and senior years
- took course at local community college in graphic design during summer before junior year
- volunteered to help a family friend get her house set to show to potential buyers for about twenty hours during summer before senior year
- National Honor Society member since I was inducted in sophomore year (in other words was a member in sophomore, junior, and senior years)
- volunteered at Children's Water Festival during sophomore and junior years (and am currently planning on doing it again this May)
- Ayudantes Spanish tutor during senior year
- volunteered at River Clean Up during senior year
- volunteered at Riverside Elementary Family Read-In during junior year
- job shadowed for graphic design during summer before senior year
- attended the NCSSSMST (National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools in Math, Science, and Technology) Student Conference 2004 at the University of Michigan-Dearborn

 • All of the courses that I take at the Math and Science Center are either honors or AP, and I am getting through AP English Language and Composition at my home school. Almost all of the courses that I took at my home school over the past four years were required for graduation.

Subjective:

* Essays: I believe that I did my best on them for what I could do at the time that I wrote them last summer.
Northwestern was looking for.
* Teacher Recs: I didn't see it, but I have no doubt that it was great. Let's just say that during my sophomore year at the Center, my acc. chem teacher told me that she told him that I was one of her more motivated students behind my back-which would have been a major compliment coming from her (I'm not going to go into detail on this though-long story). She's actually my favorite teacher at the Center, and I used to like being in her class which I'm sure was apparent to her. I also had her write my rec. to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and I was accepted months ago there.
* Counselor Rec: She's one of my biggest advocates so I'm sure it was great as well though I'm not so sure about the amount of personal info she put into it (even though I gave her a resume).
* Hook (if any): Does having a huge disability count? LOL.

Location/Person:

* State or Country: Michigan
* School Type: both are public but one has an application process for eighth graders wanting to attend in high school (the standardized testing on a Saturday, the forms, the grade review, etc.)
* Ethnicity: white
* Gender: female
* major strength/weakness: hmm... I did well in basically everything (best at English and biology though), but the only course that ever gave me trouble was chemistry (and the only course that I ever got a B in was acc. chem in sophomore year). As a person: major strength: determination, major weakness: being bothered stares and comments about me from others
* why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: the ACT score (with no SATIIs), maybe the essays (I thought that they were good, but I don't know what the Northwestern adcom thought of them), and not having national recognition or something of the like for anything

Other Factors:
As stated above, congratulations to everyone that got accepted! All of you deserved that decision, and I'm sure you'll have a great four years there.

I'm personally all right with the physical rejection from NU even though I'm slightly bothered by it. I know that I did my best on everything that I did as well as did everything that I could do considering all of the extra stuff with which I have had to deal. However, they apparently thought that I could have done more, and it's annoying to not know what that was exactly (what I think it was and what they thought it was may be different). However, I'm not going to ask them what the problem was because that question is uncomfortable for any applicant to ask of a school. Plus, it would be even more uncomfortable for the adcom member because he/she would have to answer it. How would any of us feel telling someone that "we rejected you because...?" LOL. No. I'm not that mean.

As for me, I'll be attending the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor next fall and am pretty excited to be going there. I was actually there earlier today, and am pretty impressed with the professors that they have there. We saw a lecture in progress, and while I watched, I strangely felt like I've been in there before through the Math and Science Center and the way that we're taught there as well as what we're taught. It was comforting. I also felt welcomed there as a person. The only thing that scares me is the physical size of campus (with the eyes), but after I get a support/peer group established and ECs going again, I'm sure that I'll be fine.

Ah, reese. You're taking it really well, that's great... Don't worry about it.. UMich is such an awesome school. Good luck!! =) Use that beach towel ^^

afaforce - Oh, I will. Hey, I've got my "M Go Blue for Mott" bracelet on right now.

BTW, if anything else, we'll beat you guys in football next year (though you might beat us in basketball... IDK. LOL).

-smile-

Was actually expecting this question way sooner. I am ridiculously bad at math. as in ridiculously so. am currently in math remedial class (no guffaws here pleaseee.. lol)

However, SAT I math to me is mostly..i dont know..reasoning?eliminating?for SAT I i mostly cross out answers i figure are logically wrong and then just pick off the rest. i couldn't do that for MATH IIC because it actually require mathemathical KNOWLEDGE - something i don't have, not for lack of hard work, but simply because i don't have a propensity for math at all. I actually scored the lowest math2c score in my school..

hahah reese, NU was totally my top option after being deferred from elsewhere, but .. i surprisingly got into my first choice, so I don't think I'll be going to NU.. i was looking forward to visiting again, but oh well. you win some you lose some... wish i could go to ALL the colleges that accepted me X(

afaforce - I'm just curious, but where's elsewhere? BTW, I'm not that surprised that you got into your first choice. Like I've said before, you have a 1490 and a high GPA (with ECs, of course). You're fine.

reese- oh, man, it's so difficult getting in after being deferred, which is why i was so surprised ... "Elsewhere" is upenn (wharton)

afaforce - Nice. I'm sure you'll be happy there.

i hope so, too. much luck @ umich!! i know a few ppl that might be going there..

[] Essays: Long ones were pretty good but probably not something that made me stand out, short ones were kind of sketchy, i had a difficult time because I wanted to avoid cliches.
[] Teacher Recs: great
[] Counselor Rec: she gave me enthusiastics and wrote a nice letter, but it was kind of a repetition of my extracurriculars
[] Hook (if any): nothing special about me

[] why you think you were accepted: I think I was accepted because I reached the top levels of all of the activities that my school offers, even though I wasn't doing things at a state or national level. Also, I was pretty happy with my ACT score.
[/ul]Other Factors:
I've been accepted to:
Northwestern
William and Mary
University of Wisconsin-Madison
University of Minnesota (Honors, with a $36,000 scholarship)

I've been rejected by:
Yale
Duke
(bastards) just kidding! just kidding again

I've been waitlisted by:
Harvard
Brown
Georgetown

I was a little dissapointed by all my rejections/waitlistings, but that was for like five minutes. I'm pretty sure I will be going to Northwestern, but I'm staying on the waiting lists just in case something opens up for me, in which case I will visit campuses and make a decision. I was extremely grateful to be accepted by NU, and I'm looking forward to next fall.

afaforce - Give me a break. You'll be fine. However, if you would have said that your first choice was Georgetown, Duke, or University of Chicago, I would have been able to say that I know people from my class that are planning on attending next fall, and I know simeone that graduated last year that's currently a freshman at Harvard. Drats! I can't help you a UPenn though! You make my life so difficult. ;)

I just found out that I have another scholarship interview next Tuesday afternoon at 1:16 (I'm serious. That's the time that they want me to be there). That slightly made my day (that and the fact that I kind of know what to expect this time because of the interview that I had a few weeks ago for another scholarship). The prospect of possibly getting free money always can brighten someone's day.

Reese!! 1:16?? Are you sure it wasn't a typo? lolol. Yeah, scholarship money is amazing! I haven't officially received results for any =(, but I think I will be getting one next week... don't want to jinx myself, though.

I know people in my school that are going to georgetown/duke! no uchics, though

afaforce - No, it wasn't a typo. The foundation that's runnig this does a set of about seventy or so scholarships (some have different criteria though such as having gone to a specific high school, going to a specific college, going into a certain field, etc. so the actual list of potential scholarships that one person can do gets shorter) and literally go by the minute. People that I know that have been selected for interviews for different scholarships (in front of different committees of course) have had interviews at 12:57 pm, etc. It's really weird. The first one that I had was at 4:00 pm which surprised me since it was set for a "normal" time. LOL. However, this time, they're making me miss school which I'm not too excited about since it's painful getting caught up in classes again. I hope that I get at least one of them for this (not sure about that though since I know many of the people that I'm up against-they're all amazing). ;)

That's cool about the other people that are going to Georgetown and Duke though!

Status: Accepted! (WCAS)
*Plan on transferring to SESP for a dual major, Econ-LOC.

STATS:

SATI: 1510 (800 V, 710 M)
SATII: 790 W, 730 ic, 710 US
ACT: 34
AP: 5 Bio, 5 Stats, 5 US

Rank: 2/265

Recs: two solid teacher recs, solid guidance rec.

Essay: "Danger/Opportunity" one- about running a website when I was younger, losing it all to a crash, and then rebuilding.

ECs: President of NHS, VP of DECA (3 years), tons of community service, math team, honors EC science program for 10 years, internship at local insurance company

Awards: National Merit commendation, AP scholar, 1st in state for DECA, 3rd in state for DECA, honor roll

Didn't visit or interview before sending in my app.

Other factors:
Hook: none
Long Island, NY
Caucasian
No legacy or any familial involvement

Other Decisions:
Accepted at UMich (honors)
Waitlisted at Duke
Deferred/Rejected at Penn (Wharton)

In the end I realized I'd be happiest at NU anyway. It was hard getting waitlisted and rejected at my top 2 choices, but if I hadn't, I never would have realized how perfect NU is for me. I just got back from my first NU visit and was blown away- I can't wait until next year!

Decision: Accepted to Weinberg

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1530 (780 math, 750 verbal)
[] SAT IIs: Math IIC=750, USHistory=710, writing=700
[] GPA: was 3.4uw and 4.4w at time of application, with 7th semester it's now 3.58uw and 4.58w
[] Rank: no ranking at school
[] Other stats: AP Scholar, National Merit Finalist, 3 on french4ap, 4s on european historyap and calc ab/ap, 5s on bioap and ushap.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: not bad, i'd like to think ;) then again, i did all of my applications the night before they were due (not bad... 8 apps in 3 days)
[] Teacher Recs: who knows
[] Counselor Rec: decent
[] Hook (if any): 10 years of foreign language in high school, 9 years of aikido and judo, 7 years of french horn, quite a bit of community & religious involvement
[/ul]Location/Person:[list]
[] State or Country: Rolling Hills Estates(suburb south of los angeles), California, USA
[] School Type: large (3100 students) public school
[] Ethnicity: 1/4 mexican, then a mix of european stuff. i checked caucasian & mexican-american
[] Gender: male
[] major strength/weakness: foreign language, ECs, standardized test scores
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: i think a large part of it had to do with the whole mexican-american thing (although i like to think that it didn't), because northwestern, at least according to some of my brochures, had a 4.9% hispanic population, and it prides itself on being "diverse".
[/li]

not surprisingly, i got rejected from yale, brown, dartmouth, ucla, and ucberkeley; i got waitlisted by uchicago, pomona, and washu in st. louis, and i got accepted to uc irvine and uc davis.

Not bad. Northwestern's definitely where i'm headed, since it's about as good for me as any of my other waitlisted schools.

Decision: Accepted! (Medill)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1440
[] SAT IIs: 750, 740, 740
[] GPA: 3.96 UW, 4.3 W
[] Rank: 2/140ish
[] Other stats: 5/5 on APs, 33 ACT
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Pretty good...not as good as some of my other ones
[] Teacher Recs: Only sent in one, but it was amazing
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent, just not unique
[] Hook (if any): I applied to Medill and have a strong journalism background--founded school newspaper, won prestigious internship two years in a row, and had an AMAZING rec from the editor of the paper I wrote for that basically said I was just as good, if not better, than any other grad school intern and a lot of the people he hires
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CO
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: asian
[] Gender: female
[] major strength/weakness: i suck at math, but i think it doesn't matter as much because i applied to medill
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: the journalism factor[/li][/ul]Other Factors: tons of ECs that showed initiative or that i did well in (like forensics), a lot of awards, well-rounded

Accepted: Northwestern, Georgetown, Cornell (Cornell Tradition), UPenn, Dartmouth, Princeton
Rejected: Yale (applied SCEA), Stanford
Waitlisted: Washington University in St. Louis

So you're choosing Northwestern instead of Princeton, wishfulthinking? Oh wow if I had that choice... lol
