to 1984Pom

I got rejected from the bioengineering major so congrats to your daughter! The fact that it is a new program is both a virtue and a vice. The program was first established in 2004 and they’re still trying to iron out the curriculum. Many of the students are highly involved in establishing the education track for future uillinois bioengineers. So she will definitely have a very involved/hands on curriculum experience. However, because it is a young program, you may not get the cream of the crop bioE edu… bioE @UofI is still an extremely fine program, but it is not at the same level of “prestige” of other UofI engineering programs like ECE, of ME. Also, some people get really stuck on numbers and rankings. BioE @ u of I isn’t ranked high… again that’s only because of it’s recent establishment.

^ I am wondering why people are flocking to BioE at UIUC. If you look at the undergraduate rankings, you’ll see that EE and CompE are both top 2,5 in the nation, and then you see BioE…rank 25. And yet admission to BioE is more competitive??? Im trying to think of what reasons people may have in applying for BioE at UIUC. Just to see if they can get in? Do they think the value of the degree will appreciate drastically in the next 5-10 years? Is it because of UIUC’s starpower as an engineering school? Are people just hopping on the bioengineering bandwagon?

I have no idea… Any comments?

Did you at least read Emmers post? The program is in its introduction stage, and is only admitting a select elite few. BME is a hot program now…all over. Instate people want to get into U of I’s instate program, and the value of the degree in BME from UIUC isn’t low to begin with. I assume your referring to the US News and World reports program rankings which are heavily weighted towards research dollars and graduate research. It takes time to build both up, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the program.

As Emmers said, don’t get hung up, which you apparently are, on the rankings. They’re not indicative of the quality of a program that’s in its infancy.

Son is in BioE at UIUC. I too was concerned that he should go to a higher ranked program at UIUC. If he was set on BIOE, there were plenty of other higher ranked BIOE programs out there.

HOWEVER, he has discovered it’s a great program. the selectivity of the program ensures only the brightest of the bright are in the program. Students in the curriculum push each other and they continue to achieve.

the small size of the department also ensures the professors know the students very well and education is very personalized.

Employers are also well aware that the program is comprised of the top students in a top program. The rankings will continue to rise, no doubt about that.

I have read that the job prospects for BIOE in the future are excellent.

BioE is a definitely an excellent and interesting major choice. As d101parent has said, the future is very bright.

But as far as explaining why so many people are applying to BioE… I think enemyunit has some merit in his statements. There is a huge BioE influx because of UofI’s prestige and because of this huge spike and exponential growth of interest in this new curriculum. Even if an applicant has the slightest interest in BioE, of course the applicant should apply to bioE because it is a program track that cannot be transferred into but can easily be transferred out of, so it is I guess a college “strategy” if you will.

Also, I don’t think I stressed this enough in my other post but rankings (especially USWR) are NOT comprehensive indications of qualitative excellence. the priorities of USWR is very different from individual applicants’ education experience priorities. So, in my humble opinion, i think rankings should be taken into consideration, but by no means should it be the primary basis of judgment.

for certain people infancy is a good quality as you basically get to formulate your own education (due to the indefinite and unspecified class choice). and there are people on the other side of the spectrum who prefer a more established, formal, and “traditioned” program.

as far as how much the program will progress. I think it will most definitely progress and improve drastically within these next years, however not as much as I would like… funding has become a huge issue, and although representatives say it’s not going to affect the quality of education… I can’t help but feel in the back of my mind a little bit of uneasiness.

I have a question for d101Parent. My d would probably go pre-med in college and initially, not knowing anything about the competitiveness of bioE at UIUC, we just liked the curriculum and applied. We thought it was a good fit for a pre-med student. Since the students in the program are truly ivy-caliber, I was wondering about the grade deflation. How difficult are the courses? As a parent would you recommend the UIUC bioE program to a potential premed student?
