Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1780 total, like 740 math, 550 writing, and 490 reading
[] ACT: did not take
[] SAT II: 720 chemistry, 690 mathII, 610 US History (I planned not to take them since the representative I met from UCLA told me not to take them unless I wanted engineering, so I did not study until the last minute)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] UC GPA: not sure, 4.1…something
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 9%, 24 out of 536
[] ELC?: Yes [] AP (place score in parenthesis): never took one before, taking Calc AP and Chem AP senior year
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): school has no IB
[] Senior Year Course Load: 2 APs as stated above and other 6 regular classes (1 Advanced art class) school has like 10 ap classes
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] Like 3-4 schools awards, not that major and academic decathlon
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):…clubs like what everybody has CSF and several community services clubs…and some other things
[] Job/Work Experience: worked in family business but did not get paid due to serious financial instability
[li] Volunteer/Community service:hospital volunteering over 200 hrs, office volunteering 50 hrs, library volunteering over 50 hrs, academic decathlon, some other things
[/li]

[li] Personal Statement:[/ul] I spent 2 months on it. I started in in the beginning of Sept and finished it in Nov. I guess it helped me a lot to. The first prompth is about my stuggles on language (I am an immigrant) from the first day of school. The second one is about how I am a big sister and those duties I have to do for my parents due to language barrier and I ended it with how much I love my brother and sister. I like the ending a lot though. One of my best essays (another best one was the one on The Great Gatsby I wrote in my American Dream class…)
[/li]

Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?:

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:my stable GPA throughout high school, volunteering
[] Weaknesses:poor SAT scores, high school courses
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] I kinda expected this to happen.
[/li]

General Comments:
For high school juniors, everybody has a hook in his life, you just have to really find one and be serious about it. Once you start writing about something personal, or even your secrets that you never tell anyone, it will flow automatically. The best is to start a PS early, not the week before you submit(lots of my friends are like this).

This sounds like a very competitive year and some amazing candidates were not accepted. If you want to attend, I encourage you to appeal. (I’m a parent). My friend’s daughter appealed to UCSB with a 3.2 GPA and very low SAT’s. She got accepted. I also do not think it is unwise to choose a Community College. #1 it will be cheaper. #2 you will get a degree from the 4 year institution that you graduate from and it doesn’t say ‘transfer’. #3 often the teaching for lower division courses is of higher quality. #4 Sometimes, you can get into a more prestigious 4 year because you can do better in the Community College GPA-wise.

Did I say cheaper, less expensive, lower or no debt?..

I currently work at UCSD and we have many high achieving, successful transfer students. I know a few very well. One is a Physics major, getting all A’s and has a great internship in a Sustainability program. He’s having a great time. He will get into an MA or Ph.D. program of his choice.

Keep your head up people, this is going to be a roller coaster ride of month. Success is about persistence. Look up “Man in the Arena” by Teddy Roosevelt for inspiration.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2110 (CR-690, M-680, W-740)
[] ACT: 29 (but didn’t count because my SAT was higher than my ACT)
[] SAT II: Biology (Molecular) - 730, Math Level 2 - 700
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.00
[] UC GPA: 3.47

[] ELC?: Nope.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (4), APUSH (4), Microecon, Calc AB, English Lit
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Econ, AP English, Art 2, Spanish 4 Honors, Physics Honors
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 1660 Hours of Programming for a registered corporation in my city. (all 4 years)
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: 960 Hours of tutoring students at my school (3 years), 36 Hours for Interact Club (1 year)
[] Personal Statement:[/ul] Pretty darn good in my opinion. I wrote it about 3 days before I submitted my apps but they turned out to be really good either way. I wrote about how I helped a blind student and tutored him my sophomore year and how my family has lived in over 25 different cities and how that has culturally enriched me. My essays definitely gave the admissions officers what they were looking for dead on.

Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yeap.
[] Intended Major: Electrical Engineering (SUPER competitive)
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender:
[] Income Bracket: Low
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):[/ul] Mom didn’t go to college? Tutoring and passion/dedication to helping others?
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SATs, ECs, Essays
[] Weaknesses: GPA
[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] My ECs, SATs, and essays saved my butt. I definitely slacked off in high school but I still got into one of the most competitive majors around. Getting into engineering isn’t a joke and I still made it despite my crappy GPA. Moral of my story? The UCs have definitely transitioned into a more holistic review and my ECs/essays counted A LOT in my admission decision. My programming experience definitely helped because my major will involve some amounts of programming. Also, my dedication to helping others definitely paid off and I was able to convince the admissions officers of my concern for others (which is one of the criteria that UCs look at). Sooo yeap… I made it in, and hopefully I’ll make it into the rest of the UCs as well. :D

Had some personal family deaths, moved from East Coast to West Coast junior year…

I thought this would be my safety school… Does this mean I will not get into any higher UC’s?

Why does it seem like people with high GPA and SAT got rejected/waitlisted? Did UCSC admission board deny applicants thinking that they won’t attend UCSC since they’re over qualified? Average UCSC accepted applicants last year were 3.3/1650. This is ridiculous! Never the less, don’t loose hope guys. All of you guys have a great chance at UCD, UCSB, UCI !

[li] Personal Statement:[/ul] They took me about 3 weeks to write and revise, and I had a few adults revise them which was very helpful. I focused heavily on the first essay about what helped shape my life growing up and wrote about my dad’s positive influence on me. My second essay was a bit shorter and I talked about an accomplishment that I was proud of that made me one step closer towards achieving my goals and dreams.
[/li]

I’m not the strongest student academically so the fact that they are now considering what I’ve accomplished outside of the classroom was probably a big factor in determining my admissions decision.
[/li]

I think some of you kids with great stats that were denied or wait listed its because UCSC clearly was a safety for you. If UCSC is your first choice (I think you will be admitted to some of the more competitive UCs) you should appeal and let them know you would attend if admitted. If that’s the case.
