Is something from middle school like this still a valid hook for admission? I'm just wondering... because if so, I really should have asked the College Board to take my SAT from middle school (1570) out of its archive (I didn't take it through one of the talent search thingies, and the College Board "archived" it because I was 12).

I had just assumed that trying to include an accomplishment from middle school on an application wouldn't be looked upon fondly, since more recent achievements are likely more indicative of current ability (and a level of talent demonstrated by a high SAT in middle school should presumably be backed up by strong accomplishments in high school).

Sorry for cluttering up the decisions thread... I'm just curious what the admissions perspective on this would be (if anybody knows). Regardless, I did get accepted to Caltech today, and I'll post information here after I get a good long sleep. : )

Edit... looking more carefully (I'm tired), I see that you are homeschooledand younger than the average applicant... maybe that makes such a score more relevant?

any internationals tried calling fedex ?.........do they release information relating to whether there is a package in your name ?......they didnt to me........probably rejected

Does caltech send the mail by fedex? or just normal mail?

fedex..........

so i should have gotten it already! but i havnt... im so worried. dont know what to do.

Here is my awesome (IMHO) limerick:

ODE TO CALTECH
There once was a student who loved math
She would always blaze her own path
And when it came to this year,
She hoped to bring cheer
And to make the officers laugh.

This student also enjoyed science
In engineering was the perfect alliance
A mixture of math
And a chemical bath
Was where she found her appliance.

A student to Cal Tech applied
Who hoped that she wouldnt be denied
She worked on for days
These wonderful essays
And now, her brain is fried.

Congrats to everyone!

Gra -- Hey, where in NH are you from? (I always get excited when I meet other NH people here, given we have such a small state)

hey gra, i got rejected from MIT too! i applied regular admission tho, not EA. Applied to MIT in case Caltech rejected me, luckily, Caltech accepted me!!

I'm from the Seacoast area and currently attending Winnacunnet High School. You've already met my friend "Xaq" (I saw your post), who goes to the same school as me. I'm unfamiliar to where your school is though. Do you know where you want to go (MIT/Caltech) yet?

I live in Amherst, which is directly between Manchester and Nashua... So like, the middle part of NH. No, I haven't decided yet! I'm waiting until I visit Caltech to make my decision, which isn't until the end of April.

Basically I'll make my decision on the night of April 30th by a coin toss or something, they're both such amazing schools.

Son was rejected. :( Oh well, on to other options. In a way, as a parent, I'm relieved because the place really seems intense to me & I'm not convinced the fit would be right for son. I guess the school decided it wasn't either. Still glad he was accepted elsewhere with significant merit aid.

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]

stuff that I created because there was nothing left at my HS
[] Number of Apps from Your School: 2 or 3?
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Not much... a lot of jazz and symphonic band
stuff, including school, regional, and state level awards, mock trial,
young democrats, science bowl, etc... (leader of most). I guess there
was research too... Siemens semi, if that counts.
[] Job/Work Experience: Didn't list any
[] Essays (subject and responses): I liked my "why caltech" essay the best - I thought that it had a lot of enthusiasm and personality. My other two essays were, alas, recycled. They were originally very good, but I had to butcher them to fit the stupid character limits. :( I later regretted not sending in a hard-copy application.
[] Teacher Recs: Very, very good, I think ("best in career" type)
[] Counselor Rec: Very good
[] Hook (if any): RSI? Maybe being AP State Scholar after junior year?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Oregon
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): decent
suburban public, average old SAT of 1100
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Income Bracket: >100k
[] Gender: Male
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: Good numbers, essays, recs and interview but
relatively sketchy ECs
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I don't think that anything specific made the difference - just a combination of different elements in the application.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
It was nice, although I'm still wondering if the Axlines were sent in different envelopes (in which case there is an infinitesimally small chance that I would get something) or in the acceptance package itself (in which case I didn't). I know that I'm nowhere near typical Axline level, though, so it's not a very relevant issue. While looking at previous years' decision threads I was struck by how Caltech admissions seemed to be far less mysterious than other schools', but this year there are a lot of very impressive people who weren't accepted. I'm thinking in particular about kokoda2... but I wouldn't worry. You all have very compelling records and will find a spot at a great university, whether or not it's Caltech (sorry to sound trite, but it's true!).

Congrats, HIMom! That is great for your family. : )

Yeah, tho I know son will be disappointed when he learns next weekend (after returning from Australia with his band). He tried not to get too attached to any one school, since no one knows how decisions will turn out, so I think he'll get over the setback. Hopefully, he'll have more acceptances & merit scholarships waiting for him when he returns as well. It always softens the blow when you have good news with the sad.
