Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1560 (780 M&V)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Writing, 750 Math 1C, and 690 US History––can't remember.
[] GPA: 3.59uw, 3.95w
[] Rank: 80/374
[] Other stats: AP scores––4 on Lang & Comp and 3s on MEH and USH; National Merit Finalist
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Pretty good, but not the best.
[] Teacher Recs: One awesome, the other pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn't see it. He doesn't know me at all, so lukewarm.
[] Hook (if any): 3-yr Gay/Straight Alliance VP, 2-yr student newspaper editorial staff, political adventures such as the Dem. Convention, 4 yrs. of every available instrumental ensemble. Which of these ends up being a hook is up for grabs...
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Bay Area, CA.
[] School Type: Competitive public (~1700)
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Major strength/weakness: Strength = extracurriculars, scores; weakness = grades, class rank.
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I think Reed valued my strengths more than coughs certain other schools.
[/ul]Other Factors: Legacy: Mom went there but transferred.

Wow... looking at this I have no clue whatsoever why I was admitted.

Decision: ACCEPTED!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: Umm... best of both attemts was a 1330. I can't remember my ACT
[] SAT IIs: None
[] GPA: 3.989
[] Rank: 6/288
[li] Other stats: ?
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: One was about overcoming my failures in math and growing to love calculus. The "Why Reed" was pretty good.
[] Teacher Recs: Never saw them
[] Counselor Rec: Never saw it
[] Hook (if any): None I can think of. :P

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Washington
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Major strength/weakness: My major weakness was my SAT coupled with my lack of visit/interview/anything. However, I think my academics were a strength. I do have a very strong theatre experience (like, my major EC) and am a very avid techie, which may be unique. My community service was mostly derived from tech hours. I also play flute although I'm no longer in band. No real ECs beyond that. :P
[li] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Honestly, no clue.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: None, really.

That webpage does not change. It is clearly stated on that page that decisions will not be available online so it obviously won't be on that page.

I know how you feel. Everyone was calling Admissions and finding out about their status whereas I, all the way in Asia, was panicking because I couldn't figure out the time difference, didn't want to pay for an international call, and didn't want to hear I got rejected. I e-mailed my rep though, just to ask when I'd find out. He told me I would receive an e-mail with good news in a while and congratulated me as well. Sure enough, I received the e-mail with the good news. So... Just chill. Relax. You'll find out soon enough.

Finemeal, the same thing happened to me with the mid-year report.

My stats are pretty high and I'm a URM, so I really think we just have to wait it out.... :(

That had to be the coolest acceptance e-mail flash thing ever...

Decision:Accepted!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:1540 (800V 740M)
[] SAT IIs:750/680/680
[] GPA:3.5ish (I go to a prep school and the avg GPA is 3.2)
[] Rank:unranked
[] Other stats:210 psat, 32 ACT
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays:Good
[] Teacher Recs:heard they were good...
[] Counselor Rec:good
[] Hook (if any):?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country:Minnesota
[] School Type:Private Prep school
[] Ethnicity:white/vietnamese
[] Major strength/weakness:falling GPA (not much of one, but it killed my chances at other schools)
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted:I've met/ talked with my admissions guy three or four times (college fairs and school visits) and he liked me a lot. Good essays?
[/ul]Other Factors:?

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1560 (800V/760M)
[] ACT: 34
[] SAT IIs: 800 Writing, 760 Literature, 720 Bio.
[] GPA: 2.7u/3.2w
[] Rank: Unranked.
[] Other stats: None.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My Common App essay was CRAP. But I think that my "Why Reed?" essay was good, and I also sent my essay from the University of Chicago. I was very proud of that one---a Marxist attack on conspicuous consumption as embodied by super-huge mustard---so that might have helped. I also wrote a supplemental essay on my grades.
[] Teacher Recs: Fabulous. My English teacher told me, "I've never compared anyone to Jesus, but I came as close as I ever have in your letter."
[] Counselor Rec: Probably nothing special. My counselor doesn't know me very well, nor does he have a feel for my hopes, dreams, goals, motivations, etc.
[] Hook (if any): Being a gay communist atheist before I even got there? In all seriousness, probably my interview (which my regional counselor thought was "excellent"), my Chicago essay, and the fact that my head of school was pushing hard for them to let me in.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Connecticut, USA.
[] School Type: Public.
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian.
[] Major strength/weakness: Intrinsic ability/grades.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I think that with the help of my teachers and principal, I managed to make it clear that I had more to contribute to Reed than a cursory glance at my transcript would suggest.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
Lots of extracurricular activities, primarily with leadership roles in them. And perhaps they have a queer quota.

I never got an e-mail, so I e-mailed my admissions rep and she called me a half-hour later to tell me the news. Apparently they sent the e-mail to all acceptees, but some accepted students weren't getting it (e-mail address typo, full inbox, etc.)

Decision: Accepted

cant think of any...

Awesome, danielsh. I love Reed for the fact that they'll look past grades and see that people are much, much more than that.

:D It's so great to see the kind of people who are posting here! This is the least College-Confidential-like board on College Confidential. You and I are in pretty much the same category, Minty. I'm getting more excited about Reed with every passing moment.

just from what ive heard, Reed sounds like an incredibly awesome place, not just for its quirks, but also for its great environment. im considering whether or not i should go to the Reed Activity days.
only thing is my father seems entirely opposed to my going to Reed. so even if i do go and fall in love with the place. it may all be a complete waste.

what do you think. worth it?
and how do i convince my dad that Reed is a worthwhile investment?

im not too familiar with the school, but what attracted me to it was the lack of die-hard competition (meaning people apply because they want to go, and not because the school is among the top 5 in college ranking charts) and its aura of integrity, identity, composure, and hippie-down-to-earth-ness that i really could not find anywhere else. these things obviously dont factor in too well with my dad's mindset. but, if im not mistaken, reed also has an excellent academic record. its probably just too well-kept of a secret. would anyone care to enlighten me a bit?

much appreciated

Absolutely, iamjes. I'd say it's worth it. If your dad's skeptical about Reed's academic credentials, there's tons of information you can show him, because frankly the quality of education at Reed is right up there with the country's most prestigious schools---and, because of it's size and atmosphere, you'll actually be able to get to know your professors, not just their TAs like at many of those schools.

Reed's about page has a wealth of information, but here are a few things you can mention. People often think that Reed is a mediocre school because of how it ranks in, for example, U.S. News and World Report. But it ranks poorly there because it objects to the rankings as oversimplifications and has refused since 1995 to submit its statistics. There's a page on that here[/url</a>]. Also, Reed has a stellar record in the production of PhDs in various disciplines---you can see those stats here[/url</a>]. It's also produced the second highest number of Rhodes scholars from a liberal arts college. Basically, if you want to show your dad some very impressive facts about Reed's quality, you'll find a wealth of them here[/url</a>].</p>

I'd go on, but it's way late and I'm going to go to bed. But good luck swaying your dad, and maybe I'll see you at RAD.

lamjes: Have your dad check out what the Princeton Review site says about Reed. Ranked #3 in the country for best academic experience, but with the same score (99 out or 99) as top ranked UChicago and #2 Marlboro.

how dumb of me. i emailed my person and i kept checking all day and was so frustrated- but i got my waitlisted letter when i got home at 5 (after checking continuously since 8AM), but I was still so annoyed that i didnt get any email..until i found it in my bulk mail..it was sent at 8:45 AM. damn.

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1600

[] GPA: 4.46 or something like that
[] Rank: 8/750
[] Other stats: APs:
Physics B: 4
Euro: 4
Chemistry: 4
Bio: 5
Calc BC: 5
U.S. history: 5
English Language: 5
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Mediocre to good
[] Teacher Recs: probably pretty good. I had my calc teacher from last year write one, and I was the only junior in the class.
[] Counselor Rec: probably pretty good too
[] Hook (if any): Lots of ECs and leadership. National Merit Scholar.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Southern California
[] School Type: large public (3,000+)
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Major strength/weakness: Grades ap bio and chem last year not what they could have been . . .
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Because I've spent the last four years killing myself thinking that every assignment in every class and every activity in every club mattered . . .
[/ul]

I don't think I'll go, though. Visited the campus, and I think there's a bit too much partying/recreational drug use for my tastes.

I must stick my head in the doorway- as a parent whose daughter is a rising senior ( finally). We live about 350 miles away and I visit Reed several times a year- often with my now 14 yr old daughter in tow. I have attended a few parties ( put on for Chinese New year & Cinco de -Mayo to name two)- and I have never even noticed large amounts of substances- if indeed any at all, they seem to stick to a different part of campus apparently and while I don't doubt that they have some drug and alcohol use going on somewhere- as virtually any college or high school in the US does, but unlike some schools who depend on substances to lubricate the social scene, Reed located as it is in a major city- always has alternatives to depending on alcohol as a party requirement- in any case- Reed will kick your butt when you are sober and if you party too often you most likely wouldn't be able to keep up with your work.

Picara, I don't know where else you applied, but there's definitely partying and drug use at every college. I've visited Reed and spent a lot of time talking both to Reedies and students at other colleges and most of them agree that there's no more drug use at Reed than at most other places––it's just that Reedies are more open about it, so it's more visible.

Don't dismiss Reed just for that. I'm someone who doesn't see the point of doing drugs or partying excessively at all; I'm not going to Reed for that. I'm going to Reed for its outstanding academics, for the self-selecting nature of its student body, and for its atmosphere.

You'll find drugs and partying wherever you go, but Reed has myriad good qualities that you won't find anywhere else.

Given Reed's work load, I doubt that sustained drug use can be maintained. Those that do are probably, "selected against" fairly quickly.
