Official Deferral Support Group

ohhh well. i should probably apply to more places now. haha

agreed. i’ve been pushed to do apps forever. gotta start it before I head out to Pasadena.

did anyone else get senioritis too early? my grades suck this year haha.

well i got junioritis last year if that helps lol. but muh gradez were still gewd ;-D

i got it pretty bad. it’s terrible.

So anyone wanna write out the different kinds of deferrals?

Alumni
Rich people
Potential acceptees?

Is that it? Are a lot of deferrals a polite way to say no? How can you tell?

what?? i dont understand the question lol

I think he is saying what are the possible reasons for being deferred…

^ Yea.

Some deferees have a shot. Some don’t.

Can someone elaborate on that?

i think that they took a bunch of us, tacked our applications onto a wall and sprayed silly string. The ones who didn’t get sprayed were accepted and the ones with string are deferred. then they take all the deferred candidates and do the same thing, only with twice the amount of silly string, thus, less acceptances

bahaha
i dont know why i was deferred
maybe because im in IB SL math and they’re waiting for my standing in the calculus part of it (since i applied for wharton)

Alumni
Rich people

those two are a nice away of saying rejection

for others, they were actually qualified

does anyone know if upenn’s deferrals has any similarities to yale’s deferrals?

^^^^
They are very similar. Neither are acceptances or rejections.

^^ oh i meant like some strictly deferred due to numbers.
like it wouldnt look good if they let in every acceptance during early decision bc then the percentage stats would be thrown off so come RD time those people kind of have an up on admittance

According to the alumni counsel on the admissions, historically legacy applicants have been deferred and then accepted many times… many legacy students with good grades and give a ***** load of money have been flat out rejected. I believe 200 legacy ED applicants were flat out rejected.

So, No. If one is deferred, he or she has a shot because Penn is still interested.

not with penn, penn is binding why would they not accept qualified applicants early

Usually a deferred student is someone who was either just as qualified as someone else statistically but the accepted candidate had a “hook” or some extraordinary circumstance.

E.G.: same grades, same test scores, etc. but candidate A is a recruited athlete, A gets in, B gets deferred

Either that or the deferred student is a “replacement” for the accepted candidate in a specialized field, much like in cases of wait-list applicants.

E.G.: accepted candidate A is supposed to be first-chair violinist in the school’s orchestra, candidate B is also a great violinist but had lacking stats (grades, scores, etc.)- just in case A cannot come to Penn (insufficient financial aid package, etc.) candidate B is deferred in order to “fill in” A’s spot

Or so I’ve been told.

I’ve been coping by listening to Elton John and Kiki Dee’s rendition of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” for the last two weeks.

i’m still so depressed about the deferral. our chances are so slim now! i can’t help but feel like i “wasted” my ED. but then again, penn was/is my first choice…

bump!!!

Haven’t been on UPENN CC since the deferral (or like two days after) I took a serious withdrawal because it made me so depressed! I am still upset over my deferral because Penn is MY FIRST CHOICE SCHOOL, there is still nowhere else I would rather go. I was also accepted to UMich (like many other people here seem to be) so at least I have SOMEWHERE, but still i am anxiously awaiting April to find out about Penn.

I just hope I have some sort of a chance, funnily enough my brother was differed ED and than accepted RD, so I do have some sort of hope. Should I mention this in my letter? My brother did not have amazing high school grades and he had good not great EC’s, but his SAT’s were slightly higher. He did very well at Penn and graduated Magna Cum Laude or Cum Laude–would they look into him/already know I am a sibling or is it worth mentioning that after his deferral he went to Penn and did well and loved it…blahblah?

I was told to wait to send the letter, seeing as they were inundated with new applications for RD as well as angry phone-calls from Alumni who’s kids had been rejected…etc, as well as the holidays.

Besides accomplishments, my love for the school, what else do I include? And for my ED app I already had and extra recc letter!! Do I send another one anyway?

I would do ANYTHING to go to Penn, gosh I just want to go there so badly!!!
