Well said. This is an education institution, not a saleman position, the kids are applying. Come on. The school should show some respect for kids worked so hard to maintain high GPA with hard course load. No other excuses to reject them I hope these well qualified deferred kids eventually get in.

^I think that is absolutely true. In looking at a good sampling of the EA threads of the schools on this forum (and I’m kindof a geek that way :D), there is little discernible correlation between a high SAT/ACT and acceptance.

I will say, of any trend I’ve seen; a high (3.8+) gpa with a rigorous curriculum seems to be a distinguishing factor. Hard to get a read on self evaluated essays, Rec’s and EC’s. But I know my D actually dug into the course descriptions of actual classes in her chosen major and wove those into her interests and reasons for wanting to be a Wolverine. The ND essay I proof read was really generic. Could have been for any Ivy with a name change.

@JH8888 - there is, I think, a fear of the “robo student” and admitting those that are only good at remembering and regurgitating information. Unfortunately, only 10% deferred eventually get offered admission (broad brush stat today on the “dailybeast”)

I don’t think there’s good recent data on that. Mich only started the common app last year. Application totals are expected to be almost 45,000 this year, up from 30,000 only 2 years ago.

QUESTION: Will sending in another letter of Recommendation from a teacher greatly improve my chances? Also, I forgot a first place contest in the application. Is it bad to add that when I send them my updated list of information? And is it safe to assume that Letter 1 is for people whose application they didn’t get to read yet?

From what everyone has been telling me, it is really some nonsense that I didn’t get in (sorry, don’t mean to sound full of it), but I’m not overly concerned and I guess that’s a good way to look at it. Other options :).

Question: Does anyone know what email address to send things or ask the admissions office? Also is that true about only 10% of deferred are accepted?

Not to mention I go to a rigorous Jesuit College Prep school hence a lower GPA, and there have been worse kids to get into Michigan than me according our scattergram.

Class President four years, member of NHS for three years and CSF four years, History and Politics Club, Intramural volleyball, club volleyball, club swimming, National Merit Scholar, nominated for the Prudential Service of Community Award, National Charity League President and Award winner, tudor, camp counselor for inner city kids, incredible service to my school, head Rectora at my school’s Kairos retreat (It’s a Jesuit retreat where people “find themselves.” Anyway, I was picked rectora [the head leader] out of a pool of about 90 applicants for a team of 10 girls. Kairos is a pretty big deal.)

Served as a House of Representatives Page for a semester during Junior year in Washington, DC. It was sort of like an internship, except our duties included delivering letters to members of congress on the House Floor and raising the flag over the Capitol Dome in the morning. I got really, really good grades at the Page School in the Library of Congress. I was a member of a class of 60 kids from across the country with over 10,000 applicants based on academics, character, and leadership skills.

Out of state and white. I mentioned in one of my essays my issues with Epilepsy and how all of the trouble I’ve had has made me a better person, student, and citizen. In another, I discussed my program in DC. In my additional info I included more stuff about how difficult the second semester of junior year was due to being in and out of the hospital a lot.

ahhh deferred is such a bummer! I read the email while stuck in traffic with my mom and I got a huge lecture about failure. Great. My grades kind of sucked this past semester but four out of my six classes were AP. You can’t really take AP or honors religion haha.

I just got off the phone with a University of Michigan Admission’s office so I thought I would share some information
They don’t have a set number of students that they accept after being deferred. So there really isn’t a percentage. She did say though that this year they were really conservative with EA acceptances.
There isn’t a difference in letters. Every school wants to see your midyear reports and LSA and Engineering and all the different units may play a role into which letters you receive. They have been watching the CC talks here and she said not to put much weight into the good/bad letter theory.
The best way to show your interest would be to send the midyear and email your regional counselor.
The earliest she said you could find out would be the beginning of February (with rolling) if you have sent in your midyear grades by then.

Kaystal–Many thanks for sharing the FACTS of your discussion with admissions. Helpful to us all!! All deferred (including my S) just need to stay focused on their senior year grades, hope for the best, but plan for the worst. Clearly every applicant on here has outstanding credentials to be successful at UM, or elsewhere. Best of luck to all!! :)

last year a girl at my school got in a week after being deferred and i have heard many stories like this, so idk if that february thing is true or not.

Although it could be true that many students find out soon after being deferred this may not be the norm. I wouldn’t place all your hope in finding out super soon. Instead I would just plan to send in grades and other information if fit.
ArKhAiK, like I mentioned earlier, there isn’t a set % that the admissions office have released.
