mam1298, I suspect UM sussed out that you might be using their school as a safety or back-up. Be happy w/UChicago, if you want to go there—that’s fine, it’s a terrific school. If you really want to go the UM, a quick letter of genuine interest and stating it is your first choice, or that you would definitely attend if accepted (but you must really feel that way) is in order to your regional rep. But I would be very quick about it.

That said, I don’t know how anyone could really view Michigan as a safety or back-up, but I bet it comes through at times on the application or through the essays. It’s one of the top schools in the country. Many years ago I was turned down at Michigan for grad school, but accepted at Harvard. I believe that still happens sometimes at both the grad and undergrad level.

just wondering anyone heard from A&D yet?
I don’t see anyone post deferred stats for Major in A&D.
I still didn’t heard anything yet.
I am nervous :(

Really bummed, Michigan was my first choice!

btw i recieved letter 1

how much will a letter of interest affect a decision? I told them that U of M is my first choice.

Has anyone who has been deferred EA heard back yet?

So anxious…

there was the first round of deferral acceptances sent out last friday. i heard the next batch will not be sent out until mid-march, but i do not know for sure.

Yep when I called them they said the first batch were people that were highly competitive that missed ea acceptance by a little bit. Second round is for a little bit less excellence in test scores gpa etc.

I was deferred as a RA applicant. Was I also one of the highly competitive ones?

whens the second round coming out?

@ilikesalad: I was talking about the people that were accepted in the first batch after being deferred early action. The second batch includes people that were deferred early action and possible regular decision (I’m not that sure. Maybe just people deferred early action).

@luna27: The admissions rep said between late-march to early-april.

Deferred with letter 1 from UMichigan COE.

Stats:

SAT: 2320/2400 and 1520/1600

Weighted GPA: >4.5 out of 5
Class Rank: My school doesn’t rank, but top 15% at least
AP: Took 10 AP exams (including AP Physics C, AP Calc BC, and AP Computer Science). 5’s on all of them except for one 4.

Awards: National Merit Finalist, USAPHo semifinalist, National AP Scholar (lol). Nothing major.

Senior Year Schedule: Taking 4 AP’s
Essays: 7/10 for the 250 word one, and 8/10 for the 500 word one

I’m really disappointed right now. I honestly didn’t see this coming. Does anyone know when deferred decisions come out? Also, do you guys think I have a short at being accepted.

wow I would not have seen this coming if I were you either, even with the tough C of E standards. I hope Alexandre weighs in on this one. The only thing I can think of is if it was obvious/evident U of M is a safety school (if that is the case)? And that is just a wild guess. Or did you forget to send in your mid year grade report? I know that happened to a friend’s kid last year. 10 AP exams and 5’s on all but 1? Doesn’t that make you a sophomore LOL. Wow. I know admissions typically doesn’t not discuss admissions decisions but does anyone else think this is worth a phone call to double check?As I said hopefully Alexandre will weigh in on this.

@shs1975, thanks for the advice. To answer your question, yes, I did consider UMichigan a safety school. I tried not to make it evident in my UMichigan essays tho (no shameless bragging or egotism, I swear :P).

As my deferral letter told me to send in my midyear grades, I assume COE haven’t seem them yet. I’m not sure that they will help tho (got a B in AP Chem, ■■■). As far as calling U of M, do you think its really worth it? And if so, what should I ask?

Also, is it “bad” that Michigan was one of my safeties? Can adcoms somehow tell who considers the school a safety and who doesn’t?

@jaico22 I hope you’re right :)

I do not know if calling U of M would be worth it, that was just my emotional reaction. All I know is that I am a mom, and if my son had your stats and didn’t get in I would be tempted to call-if it was my dream school. But no idea if it would do any good. Good luck in the future, you will have a great future no matter what!

@familyguy
This is the first batch of decisions that went out for RA applicants.

Does Michigan take SAT Subject Test scores? My S was deferred (Letter 1–although I doubt which letter someone receives makes any difference) and he didn’t send his Subject Test scores in because he is under the impression that Michigan doesn’t consider them. He did quite well though so I was thinking it couldn’t hurt.

He also thought that his school sent in his midyear grades but apparently they haven’t. For everyone here, the son of a friend of mine applied RD last year, was deferred at about this time and was accepted a few weeks later. I know that’s anecdotal but it’s also hopeful! Good luck to all!

To be honest, I don’t think UMich took the time to review the applications thoroughly. There are evidently plenty of excellent students who received deferral letters. In my interpretation, I think they’re just letting students know that they started reading the applications but there’s a large volume so it may take time - no other significance.
